More than sixty years ago, a tired and frail woman looked down at her 10th child, exhausted, she smiled.
Five years later, that boy, small for his age, red haired and freckled, got a small Old West Kit, as a gift. He played with it all day, until he ran out of caps.
It is summer now. Hot, calm, lazy. It is 1962. The boy arranges a lawn chair with plastic plaid weave, a small table next to it, and a giant glass of Iced Tea with plenty of sugar in it place carefully for his short arms to reach it. He lays back, opens a large book: "PT 109." He starts to read...
A young boy, red headed, small for his age, having turned 12 just one month earlier, stands at a crossroads, a bus stop at the corner of Gessner Rd, and Walter Road. It will be his first day at his new school. For the first time in his life, he doesn't walk to school. On that corner stand a boy who will turn 12 in just a few weeks, and a girl who is 10 years old. Both would be important in his life. None of them knew that.
A seventeen year old boy, red Haired, freckled, wiry, still small, but no longer the smallest, but close to it, stands close to his girlfriend. She is leaning against a kitchen wall, hands behind her back, looking up at him. He leans in to kiss her...
An 18 year old boy, who thinks his is a man, stands tall, every inch of his five foot three frame ramrod straight. With his right hand raised, he takes an Oath. He is now a member of the United States Army.
A 22 year old man, red haired, freckled, with tears falling with the intensity of the rain outside, says goodbye to the 20 year old woman from the bus stop. Goodbye.
A 27 year old man, mahogany hair, wiry, steps into a small crowded apartment. In it, sits a young woman of 21. They meet. He proposes to her by saying: "What is your fiance's name?" "Peter." "Peter is the name of an Apostle, Kevin...is the name of a husband." And so it came to be.
A young man, and a young woman, sit in the birthing room of a hospital in Texas. A beautiful baby girl comes into the world. She isn't breathing, and she is blue. The woman asks: "What does she look like?" The doctors and nurses work furiously on the baby...the husband holds his breath. A minute later, the baby takes her first breath, and wails. The young man whispers with relief: "She is beautiful."
A young man and a young woman, sit in the birthing room of a Kentucky hospital. Another young girl takes her first breath. The doctors are from the 19th century and want complete sterility. The young man fights to hold his new daughters tiny fingers, as she reaches out to hold him. It would be more than half an hour before those tiny fingers, met the hands of her parents. She is beautiful.
Another young man, and a another young woman stand on a beach in NC. It is their turn to start a journey as a couple. The once young man, and still very pretty middle aged woman, hug, as they see themselves 24 years earlier.
Five years later, they younger daughter, makes the same decision , in the same time frame, and chooses her Beau. They get married in a small private ceremony. The now old man, and his still middle aged wife - wish her well, as she has chosen to forge a unique path, and move out West with her husband. We watch her go...and wish her well.
A picture comes on Mother's Day. It is a picture of a young mother of two babies, 18 months apart, giving the kids a bath, with Mom outside the tub. It brings back so many moments. For one of those babies, now has two babies of her own, 18 months apart. A new picture is taken, with the older mother, and the newer babies, and then another with the younger mother, and her babies. The cycle of life, continues. Daughter become Mom, Mom has daughter, daughter has kids and become mom, mom becomes Grandmother.
Moments ...and they all add up.
Memories in moments...(Kevin Hughes)
