"THE HAG"
By: Eugene Mathena
When I was a little boy of about 10 years old all of the kids knew of a woman that lived somewhere in the neighborhood. We didn't know her name. we just knew her as THE HAG. She was real skinny and had green skin and long straggly black hair with green highlights. She had reall rotten teeth and we all imagined her breath smelt real bad. The Hag was always after us and she would sometimes at night on a full moon peep through my bedroom window at me. I know it was her because I seen her there looking at me. Sometimes she would hide from me in the dark, in my closet and sometimes under my bed. The Hag was everywhere. If one of us kids were leaving a friends house late at night we would have to walk the other halfway home because the Hag might get us if we were alone in the dark. One night around 12:00 am I was fed up with the Hag and her chasing me and scaring me at night. I awoke and I knew the Hag was in my room and that she was going to get me. She had done this before and she would always leave when the sun would come up because she was always gone. This night I was going to show her I wasn't afraid of her anymore. I creeped up out of my bed in the dark and opened my closet and I said "Got you Hag!" and she wasn't in there. I creeped over to my bed and sneaked to my hands and feet and looked under my bed and said "Got you Hag!". The ole Hag wasn't there.
I then went out side and heard something moving in the bushes. I picked up a stick and yelled "I'm going to get you Hag!" and then running through the bushes the Hag grabbed me and caused me to fall and hit my head on the ground. I knew I had run her off though because I heard her run off through the night. I awoke the next morning still laying there in the bushes and vine wrapped around one of my legs. My dog was there beside me and my stick still in my hand. I knew I had run the Hag off and that she would never come back again. I looked at my dog and I told him "Stupid ole Hag won't be back now will she boy?" he looked at me tilting his head. I said "We run her off for good, she better be thankful I didn't hit her harder with this stick". I went inside the house and my Mom asked me where I was and why I was bleeding around my ankle a little and I told her "That ole Hag tried to scare me last night again and I went after her and she grabbed me around my ankle and caused me to fall". I then said "I hit her with a stick and she ran off through the night, the ole Hag is gone and she better never come back". The Hag never did show herself again and to this day I don't guess any of us that were children back then could even tell you what house she lived in. We just knew there was a Hag in the neighborhood and I ran her off. So if you have that feeling in the night you are being watched and you see a shadow move. Better beware because it's the Hag. Just don't show no fear and get up and go after her. When you do, watch your ankles in the dark because she likes to grab them and make you fall. Just yell at her "Get out of here Hag and leave me alone". Mean ole Hag.
