The 65 foot yacht rocked side to side as we waited for the pick up. It was getting to be past the normal time for the buyers guy to come get the shipment. Something was up. The buyer was never this late and I had a really bad feeling that something was going to go wrong. Even the boss thought that the buyer sounded a little funny but said to do the shipment anyway because the buyer was paying double for what we asked. Orders are orders and I was told to just do it because the pay would be great and that nothing bad would happen. The boss also said that the Arrakis and I have done it a million times and this would be a piece of cake. “If you can float down the panama canal without being caught like you have, this op will be easy” He said. The Boss was a good friend of mine so of course I trusted him. I mean the pay was going to be well over a million dollars but like I said, I didn't feel good about the whole idea. With the cover of the night I thought I would be undetected but that wasn't the case. The buyers pickup guy was supposed to come at about 3:00 am and I left at about 5:30am with the knowledge that something was wrong and this guy wasn't going to be coming any time soon.
As I left the pickup spot which was about 200 miles off the coast of San Diego, I called the Boss and reported in that the buyer was a no show and that I had left the pickup point. He acknowledged it and said for me to go to a new pickup point and give it to them. We were going pretty slow but there was a boat about 1,000 yards ahead of so I had to call in to advise the boat that we were heading in there direction. After the report to the boat in front of us they replied back confirming that they got the heads up and then immediately asked for our boat info and said to prepare to be boarded. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but our boat is filled with a little over 26,000 pounds of pot and there would be no way we could hid it. Once we heard the radio we immediately stopped the boat and all prepared to be booked and jailed. We sat there on the water and just thought about what we were going to tell mom and dad and how we would explain it to them. Although we were in our late 20’s and early 30’s our parents would still be pretty pissed about the whole thing. There was no other way out, we had to take the consequences.
After about 20 minutes, the Coast Guard cutter had came up beside us and once on of the officers came to greet us I replied with “You're in for a big surprise” and when he asked why I replied with “Because this boat is filled with marijuana”. They immediately boarded us and asked us if there were any guns on board and at the time we had 3 mini 14’s on board, so I told him that we did and that just gave me 5 more years in prison unfortunately. The officers they brought us inland and made us dock the boat at the Coast Guard base so that it could be lifted on to the land and then searched.
As the boat was being searched, my brother and I were being questioned by all sorts of people and organizations. The FBI was there and the DEA including some people that we didn't even know who they were working with. Nobody said anything for a while until they pulled the “Your buddy already told us everything” card and got our snitch of a friend to immediately start talking so that he would get much less prison time. Meanwhile our boat the Arrikis was being striped down to every single screw that was attached to the boat.
We all knew that we were going to go to jail and at the time I had a son and wife back at home who later divorced me and would bring Matt, my son, to see me in jail. I could only imagine the stuff he must have been going through back home. It must have been hell. Luckily they shaved my prison time off a bunch of years because while I was in I helped build greenhouses and learned to become an Architect and traveled around the country helping with buildings, with a US marshal of course. By doing that I only had to spend 10 years in prison and another ten on probation finishing my total time in the late 90’s. Which is when I had my second son, Michael, and then went into business with the boss again after he finished his time and we started up Key Media. Key Media were the people who found the time for infomercials and sold all of the dinky type of stuff like the Stair Stepper device which was basically a big plastic block that you exercised with. After about 15 years of that the company went out of business during what I call the mini depression of 2008-2011 and with that I lost my job and our house had been foreclosed on and we ended up moving right across the street from where I lived when this all started. I have now remarried and my oldest son Matt lives in Maryland on a sail boat my other son Michael is about to graduate High school and is planning on joining the United States Marine Corps as an enlisted officer. Me and my new wife Lili are about to buy a RV to live out the rest of our lives in traveling around the country sightseeing and bugging the kids. From the war in Vietnam to here I have had a good life and an adventurous life.
