TIGER THE PRANKSTER AND THE GHOST FROM CHINA
Born 1985, M, from Odisha, IndiaTiger’s grandpa and thammi were sitting in the verandah. They were waiting for Tiger, who was supposed to come home after school. Tiger’s mother was busy attending the daily chores. The colony seemed so peaceful. Tiger’s grandpa had just started talking about the relatively subtle evening, while suddenly they heard a boy crying. The voice resembled the voice of Das babu’s son.. The horrible scream filled the otherwise peaceful colony with, anxiety. Immediately, the neighborhood understood that Tiger is back from school. Thammi and Grandpa almost raced to the gate, only to find Das babu’s son standing against the wall as if he has seen a ghost. He was looking straight at someone. The other someone could not be seen. Only the panic stricken face of Tipu, Das babu’s son was visible from the gate of Nilmani Kutir, Tiger’s home. Grandpa ran to the spot only to find out Tiger holding on to a snake and smilling. At first sight even grandpa’s heart skipped a beat, but he did not take much time to understand that the snake was just a toy snake. A visibly shaken Tipu however, believed that Tiger was actually holding on to a snake which he might throw at Tipu if he tries to run away. Tiger can do that. Anybody in the neighborhood can vow on Tiger’s courage and naughtiness. So, Tipu found it rather safe to stay and shout than try to run away. Grandpa went near Tiger and snatched the toy snake from Tiger’s hand and threw it in the nearby drain. An already shocked Tipu, almost survived a collapse when he saw the snake flying over his left arm and landing straight into the common drain. Tiger was dragged to the house. He was laughing a lot. Tipu in order to recover from the trauma, sat at the spot, as if he had no strength to walk anymore. As if he underwent through one of the toughest moments of his life. His limbs were almost not working. On the other hand grandpa scolded Tiger for his mischief.
After an hour, Sipun came to Tiger’s house. The matter had subdued by then. Tiger narrated the entire matter to Sipun and told him how he frightened Tipu. Sipun was laughing a lot, until Tiger told him that the toy snake is in the drain now and that he has to get in that drain and pick the snake out of the dirt for Tiger. Sipun now was in a fix and the laughter was gone. Sipun knew very well that Tiger was meaning business. Amidst such a situation suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Ashok, Tiger’s classmate. After Ashok was introduced to Sipun by Tiger, they all sat for a meeting over a table of pakodas and health drinks. Discussions had just started when Ashok revealed his purpose of his visit.
Ashok told Tiger and Sipun that three days back while he was studying in his room, he heard a strange scream, as if somebody was strangling a cat. On hearing that sound, he was curious and peeped out of the window only to find that a man was walking on the road. His body was covered with a shawl and he was constantly making that odd sound. As Ashok was looking through the window pane suddenly, the man turned and looked towards Ashok. His eyes resembled the eyes of a cat and he looked like a Chinese man. However, the interesting part according to Ashok was as soon as the cat eyed Chinese man saw Ashok, he vanished leaving no doubt in Ashok’s mind that it was a ghost. A GHOST FROM CHINA.
The word Vanished somehow did not go well with Sipun who suddenly found his throat dry. Tiger however, was quite interested to know more. He asked Ashok as to whether he had thereafter seen the ghost or not? Ashok replied in affirmation and said that on the next night when Ashok was lying on his bed, and was reading chacha Choudhry, he again heard the shrill scream. Ashok was frightened now. It was again the ghost from China who had come to kill Ashok, who had seen him. Ashok completely covered himself with the blanket and started chanting the Hanuman chalisa. According to the reasons put forth by Ashok that the chanting of the chalisa saved Ashok from the dangerous Chinese ghost. Next day, when Ashok narrated the incident to his mother, as to how the Chinese ghost had seen him and is now after his blood, Ashok’s mother simply ignored him and directed Ashok to keep away from cartoon shows. The lack of trust by Ashok’s mother left Ashok heartbroken.
Tiger on hearing the entire episode sat quietly for some time and then asked Ashok whether he can stay a night at his house. Ashok was very happy at the proposal. Sipun however, was not happy with the suggestion, as he knew that Tiger won’t go alone and Sipun was too afraid to accompany Tiger. Tiger assured Ashok that his matter shall be taken care off. Tiger only insisted Ashok to convince Tiger’s mother. Ashok replied that he would ask his mother to talk to Tiger’s mother. Sipun was getting happy, as his name had not featured by then. Sipun’s happy moments were simply cut short, when Tiger requested Ashok to seek Sipun’s mother’s permission to allow Sipun for a night out too. Sipun’s head almost choked. But he hardly dared to speak against the wish of Tiger. He never forgot that how once in the early days of their friendship he dared to challenge Tiger’s Authority and was mercilessly beaten by Tiger. Sipun surrendered to his fate.
The permission was taken. Ashok’s mother personally invited Tiger and Sipun and even convinced the mothers of Tiger and Sipun for boys get together. She assured to take care of the twosome.
The platform was set. A brave Tiger and a confused Sipun arrived at Ashok’s house. Ashok’s mother was far too cordial to invite Tiger and Sipun. They were immediately served with cold drinks, pastries, paties and chips. Sipun was still confused. He was unable to figure out that whether he should be happy to be at Ashok’s house with complete freedom and delicious food served on a platter or he should be worried because Tiger was on a mission. Tiger, while having a sip of the cold drink asked Ashok about the time when the operation is supposed to take place. Ashok told that the Chinese ghost basically comes at about 11:00 pm. Tiger then asked Sipun and Ashok to finish the food and head for the bedroom. Food was finished, Ashok’s mother asked the kids to play Ludo or some video games for a moment as she would go and prepare dinner. Tiger looked upon Ashok and asked him as to whether he still plays with video games and Ludo? Tiger told Ashok to be ashamed of his preferences. He told Ashok that as a student of class-III that was not expected off Ashok. He advised Ashok to grow up. Ashok in his mind was furious on his mother, who spilled the beans in front of his friends. Sipun did not say anything. He was still confused. He never told Tiger, but even he has Ludo which he sometimes plays with his cousin brother, Lotto.
Tiger sat on the bed and unzipped his kit bag. The kit bag had scissors, tapes, screwdriver, ball, stones, a plastic gun, gum, pen, notebook, some coins, one binocular, some chocolates, band aids etc. Tiger was prepared for a war.
Dinner was over by 10:40 pm. Ashok’s mother took some time to prepare the dinner as the menu was big. Ashok’s mother left the threesome in the room and asked them to enjoy, but not to make noise as that may disturb the neighbors. Ashok asked about the plan. Tiger remained mum and asked Ashok to wait and watch. The suspense created by Tiger did not go well with Sipun. Sipun only thought that the ghost would not spare the three and would teach the trio the lesson of their life.
The clock tick-tocked to 11:10 pm, the trio was waiting for the shriek. Right at 11:20 pm, the shrill had rent the air. Tiger ran to the window, Ashok followed Tiger hesitantly and Sipun jumped off the bed like a ninja in action, with reflexes faster than Bruce-lee and with a U-like twist got under the bed of Ashok. Tiger saw the Chinese ghost. Covered in a shawl, the Chinese ghost screamed ugly. The shriek resembled the cry of a cat, as if it was being cut into pieces. Tiger wasted no time. He ran to the bed, opened his bag, picked up the stone, again ran to the window, opened the pane and with all his might threw the stone at the ghost. After pelting the stone he caught hold off Ashok and hid himself and Ashok from the ghost’s vision.
The pelting of the stone was followed by a cry. The stone had hit its target. The matter did not go down well with Tiger, who immediately, told Ashok that the man is not a ghost but a common human being. As he was explaining the theory as to how ghosts don’t feel pain, Ashok realized that Sipun is missing. Tiger was astonished! He slowly said, “Sipun where are you?”
Sipun responded from under the bed. Tiger was angry enough to have such a coward and timid lieutenant. But then they realized that the man on the street was now shouting for help and they were able to hear people gathering at the spot.
Tiger immediately asked Ashok and Sipun to join him on the bed as Ashok’s mother would now first come to their room to check as to whether they are safe or not? Tiger and Ashok jumped on to the bed, as Sipun joined immediately. Tiger ventilated his anguish to Sipun and directed him to be bold. Sipun remained mum. Tiger was not wrong as Ashok’s mother entered the room and said, “Boys are you all okay? Don’t get afraid, some thief has attacked the new watchman.” She then asked the kids to be in the bedroom and went away. Tiger ran to the window and saw that the Chinese ghost who eventually turned out to be the new watchman of the colony was being put in an ambulance. A depressed Tiger did not speak a word and went to bed. Sipun and Ashok preferred not to disturb Tiger.
Next day, Tiger woke up, brushed his teeth and joined Ashok and Sipun on the dining table. Ashok’s mother came and wished all a good morning. Tiger responded back and hurriedly asked Ashok’s mother, as to how the watchman was? Ashok’s mother replied that ‘Bahadur was fine and the injury was minor in nature.’ In the meantime Ashok’s father joined the guests on the dining table. He again wished all a good morning and started discussing with Ashok’s mother about the condition of the bahadur. They believed that some thief had pelted stone on the bahadur so as to facilitate his entry into the colony. Tiger observed that the bahadur had over night become a celebrity of the locality and Ashok’s parents did not stop praising the bahadur for being so dutiful that the thieves found it a problem to get in the colony. Ashok’s father even said that the Secretary of the colony has even proposed to hike the salary of the bahadur. Ashok’s mother however made a request to ask the bahadur to change his whistle as it produced a very bad sound like that of a cat being strangled and it seemed very odd at night. To that Ashok’s father assured that he would ask the bahadur to replace his whistle. Ashok’s father further added that the bahadur’s family will arrive late in the evening from Nepal. Ashok interrupted his father and said that, whether bahadur is a Chinese man. Ashok’s father laughed and said that the bahadur is Nepalese and they have facial traits similar to that of the Chinese people. The mystery was open for Tiger now. He finished his breakfast and took Ashok and Sipun with him to a corner. He told them that the man was not a Chinese ghost but a man from Nepal who looked like a Chinese man and told him that the sound which Ashok thought was made by the ghost was actually the sound emanating from the watchman’s whistle. Tiger asked Ashok not to disclose the fact that the stone was thrown by Tiger, which had actually injured the watchman. (That is still a secret. Nobody yet knows as to who had thrown the stone at the watchman. Residents of the colony still believe that a thief had actually come and had pelted the stone at the bahadur, injuring him with a motive to effect entrance into the colony.)
Time came to bid farewell to Ashok’s parents. Ashok’s father insisted that he shall drop Tiger and Sipun at their colony.
Tiger’s grandpa and thammi were sitting in the verandah. They were waiting for Tiger, to come home. The house seemed lonely. Tiger’s grandpa and thammi were restless to see little Tiger. Tiger’s mother was preparing lunch for the family. She was cooking mutton for little Tiger. Tiger’s grandpa had just started talking about how the house seemed empty without Tiger, while suddenly they heard a boy crying. The voice resembled the voice of Das babu’s son. The horrible scream filled the otherwise peaceful colony with, anxiety. Immediately, the neighborhood understood that Tiger is back from Ashok’s house.
