BUILDING PEACE IN OUR HEARTS AND MINDS
Our hearts and minds are very essential parts of our human system. Before we begin, let’s take a look at how scientists define the heart and the mind.
HEART: A muscular organ that pumps blood through the body (the life of the human body)
MIND: A healthy mental state of the human body.
I define the heart as the centre seat of emotion and the mind as the ability to be aware of things or the ability remember things.
Another vital word in the theme is building , Building can be a verb or a noun depending on the state in which it is used but Building in the theme is a verb which means the conscious effort in putting up a structure or achieving one common aim.
Peace is a state free from civil disturbance of a state of harmony.
Before peace can be built, it depends on the individual. The heart of each and every individual is very different and varies from country to country, the mind also which is the healthy mental of the human the human system, contains different thoughts and feelings for one another.
I am a Ghanaian by birth and come from Keta situated in the Volta region. Let’s see how peace is built in my country. Peace in my country mainly depends on the effort of the Peace Corps, Ghana has ten regions and each region has at least five thoundsand (5000) Peace Corps and these corps are sent to maintain peace but then there are still political fights, conflicts and tribal war which can’t be brought to an end. It simply means that whether there are ten thousand (10000) corps sent, there would still be wars among the towns or regions. In this type of resolution, the hearts and minds must speak. It is the duty of the heart to feel emotions and the mind to be aware of things. Being able to build or bring peace therefore depends on the hearts and minds of the individuals.
In addition, in March 2011, USIP trainers completed a five-day exercise in Nigeria for the Nigerian army peacekeepers who are preparing to deploy across the continent for a host of missions. A statement made by Mary Hoper Schwoebel, a senior program officer for USIP’s academy for international conflict management and peace building who helped conduct the training stated that the training was so unique and enthusiastic.
However, looking at what is happening in Nigeria right now, you can say the training was baseless. Therefore let’s look at some ways in which we can create peace in our hearts and minds.
Firstly, peace must be set as our highest goal and we must organize our life around it. There was a time when I taught peace was a destination, in much the same way I imagined I’d eventually arrive at happiness or success. I needed to work less, relax more and generally revamp my circumstances band relationships in order to be a peaceful person. Admittedly, it’s not easy to choose peace when we’re going through tough times. There are countless things we can do to build peace in our hearts and minds both in response to events in our lives and proactively every day.
Secondly, tell someone how their actions affected you and call someone you have denied forgiveness instead of holding it in and building resentment and tell them you forgive them. Apologize for a mistake instead of rehashing it and then chose to forgive yourself.
Thirdly, there should be peaceful demonstrations such as engaging in a little art therapy, put all your feelings in art. Create a peace collage, include images that make you feel relaxed and at ease.
Moreover, another way in which we can build peace in our hearts and minds is by leveraging your passion to help someone else, that is; you get in the zone doing something you love, someone else gets support they need. A win/win! Also, leverage your purpose to serve someone else, not for for money-just because. That might mean helping them pursue their passion or motivating them to reach their fitness goals. Whatever gives your life a meaning, give it to someone freely.
Lastly, peace can’t be built in our hearts and minds if we don’t talk about education. Education they say is the key to success. The public must be educated, they must be thought, they must learn and individuals must apply that knowledge to their daily lives. Achieving peace is not an easy task but it starts from the heart and mind of an individual to another. The people must be thought the essence of peace building and I think in that way, peace can be attained.
About One Hundred and Ninety-three (193) countries that make the united nations (U.N) and about 7.125 billion people in the world (earth population as at 2013), if each and every one of us is able to build peace in his or her heart and mind, collectively, then we are going to achieve a worldwide peace.
Therefore, my own version of the theme ‘CONTINOUS PROCESS OF ATTTAINING FRITH IN OUR CORE SYSTEM AND PSYCHE’. Long live our planet, long live our world!
THANK YOU.
