From Hell to Becoming a writer
Born 1944, M, from Oxfordshire, United KingdomFROM HELL, TO BECOME A WRITER.
A squeal of tyres on the icy road came towards young Philip, who was walking along the small side road going to school. The skidding vehicle hit him, he screamed as his face smashed into the rough tarmac, he felt the searing pain in his legs. He collapsed on the road unconscious.
A lady was watching Philip go past her house, shrieking, she saw what had happened, and watched the van drive away at speed. She had to think fast, so she wrote the van's registration number down and phoned the emergency number nine, nine, nine, telling the lady what had happened. Young Phillip whom she knew was laying in the road with shattered legs and blood running down the road. She was in tears having trouble talking to the lady on the other end of the phone and give her the van registration number. The Receptionist told her to hang on while she gets the Ambulance, Paramedics and Police onto this terrible accident. After which the receptionist then phoned the local village Doctor, he straight away was on his way, the receptionist told them about the lady who saw it needs help also. The paramedic on his motorbike got there a minute later then the Local Doctor, then soon after them the Ambulance, and the police arrived, saying the driver of the van had been stopped and Arrested already. The Doctor and Paramedic soon stemmed the flow of blood; the Air ambulance had been called they had to get the injured boy to a Major hospital Fast.
In no time the Air Ambulance was there, in a field very close, Philip was strapped and secured onto the Stretcher with supports in case of back or neck injuries they carried him fast to the Helicopter. The Paramedic went with Philip leaving his bike there. The police will deal with that for him. In a matter of twenty minutes they landed, Nurses and Doctors ran to the landing pad being careful of the spinning rotors, these were blowing the dead leaves and rubbish into the air. Philip was rushed in, where a blood sample was taken straight away to match his blood type, they put him on a saline drip in the meantime. The medical staff worked hard to save his life, one of his legs was totally smashed up. They knew they would have no chance of saving that leg, the other was appalling, after giving him more of his blood type, they took him for Xrays and Scans on his whole body so that they could plan his operations. Philip also had his pelvis fractured. As well as, his nose was broken due to his head hitting the road with force.
Philip’s Mother, Father and Sister were now at the hospital also, pacing the floor in tears their fifteen-year-old son may die, their daughter Fay had to be comforted by her mother, Audrey. A Doctor came out of the operating theater to tell them what his injuries were. They had saved his life, a lot of this is due to the fast action of your local Doctor and Paramedic, stemming the loss of more blood. Philip’s dad stood pleased, but then shouting and swearing asking who had done this to his son, using offensive words, “the Police have him in custody sir,” “I could kill the b--- for what he did to my son, and not even stopping.” Philip's mum Audrey was trying to calm her husband Mac down at the same time as consoling her daughter, ten-year-old Fay, who was in tears. A nurse attempted to take her away, but she wouldn’t move, she hung on to her mum and dad, Mac lifted his Daughter up into his arms, and that calmed him down seeing his little girl in tears. Fay and her mum had heard about the accident when she was taking her daughter to school. Mac had also heard; he shouted to his boss and told him, then ran from the farm where he worked he found his wife, the police drove them to the hospital.
Philip had been in the Operating Theater nearly four hours; then taken to the Trauma ward where his long recovery time would begin. Mac and Audrey were in the sideward standing well clear of the bed while the Nurses were helping their Philip, they were both still cuddling their daughter Fay who had virtually fallen asleep in her dad's arms with exhaustion.
They all sat beside Philip, who was only starting to come out of the anaesthetic at four pm. He was in pain, starting to cry, so the doctor gave him a strong pain relieving injection, this took a while to work. Philip now felt more comfortable, his mother held him in her arms as best as she could without moving him, he was now able to take small amounts of water. At six a bowl of soup was brought to him, his mother helped him with it, Fay wanted to help her brother also, but for safety reasons her Mother said no, not this time.
At eight o'clock Philip said goodbye to his mum, dad and sister, the Nurse came and took Philips blood pressure, temperature and pulse, everything was alright, so they gave him another warm drink and biscuits. After he had finished the nurse made sure he had the alarm button by his side, she told him if you need anything or need any help, press this button and a nurse will be straight in to see you. The Nurse gave him another injection and Philip was soon asleep.
Next morning when he woke a Nurse came into his sideward, taking his temperature pulse and blood pressure, everything was alright. Philip had realized on waking, that one of his legs had gone, he screamed, “what has happened to my leg where is it! Hell, God help me,” Philip was screaming and in severe distress, crying. The young nurse, Jackie sat with him to comfort and try to console him with her soothing words, she took him to her chest, stroking his head, she knew she should not do this. She told the staff, “Philip had just realised that one of his legs was not there,” the staff nurse told her to stay and comfort him. The staff never reprimanded her; realising that this was one of those times when you wave decorum to one side and let your heart be your guide. She left the nurse where she was and fetched him a drink she told the sister where she was going. The staff gave Philip his mug; telling the young nurse to stay with him for as long as she thinks he needs her, the young nurse went to stand up now that he was looking more comfortable. Phillip held her tightly not letting her go, so she sat down again, feeling Philip’s strong hands holding her tightly she winced, feeling his fingers gripping her and hurting. He cried again apologising to her, for hurting her, the staff told her to stay with him for a while, she sat with him till his breakfast came. The sister sat down with him; he complained that nurse Jackie had left him, the nurse had managed to get away, to her relief she had to sit at the nurses station to recover, the staff Nurse told her to get a drink and relax. The Sister told Philip about the condition his legs were in they could not save any of that leg, but your other leg they still had to remove it at the knee. Philip screamed out again, it was so loud that he could be heard in the main ward and nurses station, the staff came, Sister asked her to fetch Nurse Jackie Webb, tell her not to worry about doing her regular work, this boy needs her attention.
She came and sat with young Philip he clung to her tightly bursting into tears, the Sister told her not to worry, I will call his parents and tell them, he needs them.
In an hour his parents arrived, Fay was also with them, she was brought home from school. She burst into tears in class; they tried to console her, but all she could think about was her brother Philip having no legs, so one of the school secretaries brought her home. She sat with him holding his hand, doing her best not to cry; it was Philip cuddling his sister comforting her instead, of feeling sorry for himself, this was doing him a world of good. He had to tell her to be careful of his catheter, do not pull on it, she asked what it was so he explained to her about it. His mum and dad could see his sister asking questions were helping Philip come to terms with losing his legs. Fay wanted to see, so Philip showed her, forgetting he wore no pyjamas, he had not seen himself below his waist. She burst into tears again, his mum had to cover his legs and privates back up while she comforted her daughter. Fay wouldn’t let her big brother go, her parents wanted to take her to the canteen to get some lunch, but she didn’t like to leave Philip on his own. Audrey and Mac went to tell the Sister how having to console his sister it was bringing him to terms, with his Handicap that he now had; they told the sister that they would bring something back for her to eat.
They came back hearing that Fay was wanting to feed her brother, and him saying he can feed himself alright, laying down was difficult, they gave Fay her lunch, so she sat there happily eating with her brother. She kept looking at him, giving her brother a smile, their mum and Dad realized something was happening, but it was helping their son a great deal. They sat talking with Philip until Fay was looking drained and would soon be asleep, Mac and Audrey went around the other side and kissed their son goodbye, telling him to keep his chin up, things sometimes turn out for the best. Philip asked his dad if he would bring him his Laptop, flash cards and some of his game DVDs, certainly Son, but we will be there a bit later tomorrow, I must do some work alright. Mac carefully lifted Fay off of his Son’s bed and saying their goodbyes they left him and went back to the farm.
The turning point for Philip was his sister attention to him that had brought him back to a more stable feeling in his life. That night he went to sleep a lot happier realising it was Fays attention to him that had helped him the most. The next morning the Staff nurse came to see him first, Philip gave her his apologies for yesterday, she told him it was alright we were doing our job, he asked her to send in Nurse Jackie I need to thank her. Nurse Jackie went in very cautiously to see Philip; she was very surprised when Philip smiled at her thanking her, “please come over here, I am alright now, I just wanted to thank you for all the great help yesterday.” At that point the Sister came in, and was very pleased to see how happy Philip was this morning, he told them that, “you have my little sis to thank for that, I had to comfort her. She wanted to know what a cafeteria was, and we saw my legs that I haven’t got. I found it a big shock, but I had to control myself for my sister sake. It was then that I decided that there was no need to cry over spilt milk as they say.” he carried on saying, “I have asked my dad to bring in my Laptop for me, Sister is there any internet access here, please.” “ Yes, Philip there is, and because you are or will be a long term patient, so it will be below half price for you.” “Sister not too long I hope,” “We'll Philip that we don’t know,” they both left when he had his breakfast. Directly after that, Nurse Jackie and another older nurse came to give him a bed bath. Initially, that was very embarrassing for Phil but the older nurse told me not to worry, enjoy the experience and relax. “I wish I could relax,” he told her, they both laughed. “the older nurse said, Phil, it was so nice to be bathing a handsome young man like you, I know Jackie will also love helping you this morning. Nurse Webb went bright red blushing she turned her face away from the young Philip in embarrassment.
At this point his little sister came in with mum, there was him laying stretched out on his bed starkers, Fay wasn’t worried in the slightest, she still came over to kiss him. She really impressed him by her attitude, the older Nurse thought she was use to seeing him like this, his Mother soon told her no she wasn’t. Fay told her, “I know what a boys dick is like, so why the problem.” Mum and Fay got him comfortable laying on the bed again. The older nurse came back so as to change his catheter; Fay asked if she could stay to watch how you do it, mum told the nurse that Fay could see if she wanted to. The Nurse gave his sister all the information even taking her to the sink showing her how to wash her hands first, she saw how it was done, Fay thanked her for letting her watch, she asked her do you want to become a Nurse, Fay told her she would, I think I would enjoy helping people to get better.
The Nurse left as his Mother came in with three teas for them, Fay was excited she was telling Mum and Philip, “I am going to be a nurse.” Audrey gave him his Laptop, PSU and flash cards. Then she took Fay to lunch she went with her today with no Problem, she told her mum that Philip was much better and happier today. When they got back to Philip’s bedside he was eating his dinner; Fay started to help her brother, being he was laying down it was difficult, so Fay helped him eat everything. Fay assisted her brother eat his sweet; she even helped him with his special cup so he could drink laying down. Philip told his sister to come here; he gave her a kiss saying thank you, sis.
Philip had Fay by his side helping him set up his Laptop, using pillows to levitate it at an angle so he could see the keyboard; the Sister came in seeing this, told Philip we have a bed trolley that would do that. The Sister left, but soon coming back giving him the bed table and set it at the right height for Philip, she also okayed the cost of the wireless internet with Audrey and set it all up with Philip. His Mother told him that she had okayed it with Fay’s school for her to have the week off. It was gone four when his head teacher and two students from his class came in, the girl Sue gave him a big spray of flowers and his friend Dave, gave him a big box of chocolates. Philips emotions got the better of him, and he burst into tears thanking his two friends, Fay comforted her brother, Sue and Dave both said you wait until tomorrow the whole class will be Emailing you. Audrey was talking to the head, and thanked him and saying her goodbyes to them, Sue came and kissed Philip, he said it was worth the van hitting him just for that kiss. Sue came over to him again and gave him a deeper kiss on his lips. Philip was quite taken back by her action; they left waving to him. Fay was laughing and saying, “Sue loves him, Sue loves Philip! My brother has a girlfriend he’s all goggle eyed over Sue.
Philips supper was brought in next, and Fay set to helping her brother again, as Fay was feeding her brother his dad came in, he told Audrey that his boss had dropped him. She told him all that Fay was doing for her brother, Audrey went and put the flowers in a vase and placed it where her Son could see the display of blooms.
The family sat happily talking, knowing the worst was over, but now Philip was going to have to learn to live with his Handicap, this was going to mean hard work by them all. The family left saying their byes and giving him a kiss; Fay almost got on Phillips bed to give her brother a proper kiss, they all left him saying their byes. Philip pulled over his Laptop table, he looked at the keyboard, and he decided he would write it all down what happened to him, he set too, and then his last drink was given to him. A different Night Nurse helped him drink his Horlicks, another came in later to give him his Injections, he made sure that all his computer work, was saved. He went to sleep fast, being tired.
Next morning after his breakfast and after having his bed bath, he switched on his Laptop to see he had about twenty E-mails waiting for him, he replied to them all telling them to come and see him, but not too many at once. Philip set to and worked on his Laptop entering more of his diary notes of what happened; he was thinking about writing a story to help pass the time.
The next day he e-mailed his diary notes to his friend Dave who took it to the Head, he read it, and asked David if he would read it out to the whole school tomorrow morning. The whole school and teachers were told to go into the assembly at nine tomorrow. The microphone was set up, and the head said hello to all the students and teachers in the School Hall. “Now David Braithwaite is going to read out to you an email from Philip Mann, it is very long and is well worth you all hearing his diary of what happened on that dreadful morning over a week ago.” David, feeling nervous but proudly read out what Philip had written. Many of the students were crying, the school nurse and teachers were helping them, they had drinks. The head finished with a heartfelt prayer for Philip and every student at the school, “May God’s healing hand be laid on Philip and get him through this ordeal, may all the students going to school get there, and always home again safely.” Schooling only started after the morning break. The head e-mailed Philip telling him. “Your Diary notes were read out to the whole school by your friend David Braithwaite this morning; he did you proudly. You had many of the students in tears, and it was not only the girls, but even the hardiest of the teacher had difficulty controlling their emotions. Philip while you are layed up in that hospital bed, you should start to write, you have a talent for weaving words that strike the heart.” He signed off saying, “I will see you soon. “May God Bless You Philip,” he thought, what a beautiful way to finish his Email, he decided he was going to copy the head in finishing his the same way.
Philip started on his Laptop, he buzzed the nurse asking the nurse that came, it was Jackie again, please can you put another pillow under my head to make it easier to use my Laptop. “Yes Phillip, bet I have an idea let me first go and ask the staff if it will be alright,” she went and soon came back with the Staff nurse. They tilted his bed up, putting the bed head higher and the bottom lower as well as giving him another pillow, also being his bedside table was tilted it was perfect. “Jackie, come here please,” Philip gave his thanks to her and gave her a meaningful kiss. Jackie blushed, the Staff Nurse laughed. It was soon after this that Fay came into Philip’s sideward, he asked her where is mum, “she has gone shopping I did not want to go so she dropped me here first.” He let her read his notes and diary on what happened to him a week ago, Fay was in tears after reading it, Philip had to give her a cuddle she needed his comforting love, when she calmed down she read the Email from the Head. Fay went and got them two cups of tea, Philip then told her about the story, and what he was planning to write, she was getting excited and gave her bro a few more ideas, he added these things that she told him, to his notes. Phil had his dinner; the nurse gave Fay some also, he thanked the nurse very much. When they were drinking their tea their Mother, and Father came into the ward, his mum said she took all the shopping indoors and put it away and had their evening meal, so dad could come to see you also before we take Fay home.
Philip let his mum and dad read his diary notes on what happened to him at and after the accident. They were both impressed by what he had written. Phil then let them read the Email from his Headmaster, They both agreed with his saying that you should start to write, Fay told them they should read Philip’s story note of his story ideas. They both read that also, and they both liked his plot for the story. The three of them gave him a kiss and a cuddle before they left, he saved all his data, then relaxed Philip felt washed out and tired, he was starting to drop off. Then the Nurse came just in time to give him a drink and the injections before he fell to sleep, she told him, that he only have one more tomorrow.
The next weeks were all the same, Phil worked hard on the story and developed the plot, It read very well, he Emailed it to the head, who came back to him, he sounded very impressed by what Phil had written. The Headmaster told him he had given a copy of the short story to a Literary agent and telling him that he has given her your Email address also, “I am sure she will be in touch with you soon and that you will find her a great help.” He sat back quite surprised at what the Head had told him. He never heard from her until two days later. She came to see him. It was the early afternoon, it was before visiting time but because he was in a side ward, she was allowed in, especially when she told them why she was there.
The Agent’s name was Jean, so they sat with their cups of tea talking about the story, and how she thought it was an excellent idea for a Ladies short story magazine. She told him that she found his writing very readable, It was then that her mobile phone rang, she told this person, where she was, she told Philip that this lady is an Editor. She will help get it right for publication in their Magazine, It was then the Nurse Jackie brought the woman in, she introduced herself to him, “I’m Ann,” she seemed that she was well into middle age. Jean left her with him saying she will be in touch; Ann and myself set to work for well over two hours.
As she was leaving my Mum, Dad and Fay had come in, my sister was wearing her new school uniform, she had moved up to the secondary school where Philip should be. Ann told his parents who she was and that she was helping him prepare his story for publication in their Magazine. Fay was bouncing up and down leaping onto Phil’s bed, “you are a Writer Philip, yea an Author, I can tell all my friends at school, my brother is a Writer.” Mum said, “the whole of our village will know now, Fay will make sure of that.” Ann left saying her bye’s, their mother took Fay to fetch four cups of tea. Dad was saying that you must take advantage of all the help you were getting, that way you can make the Accident mean you are mentally better off for it. It will give it an active stance. His Mother and Fay were back with their tea, after what dad had said he was feeling very proud, Phil was determined to succeed in his new career as a writer, the disability would not matter. When my Mother, Father and Fay had left he Emailed his school’s Headmaster again, telling him he, would still at least like to do some English studies while he is in the Hospital. It would be a must if he were going to make a career of writing. He E-mailed Philip back saying he fully agreed; he would see what he could do.
Well, Philip’s Headmaster did come to see him four days later and brought another Gent with him, He told him that Mr Malcolm S Brown is your new teacher, I have arranged for him to be here three mornings a week He will help you with your English and the appropriate general education. Mr Brown is a published author himself and has now basically retired but is eager to help you achieve your ambition of becoming an Author. Philip’s Nurse Jackie came with three cups of tea, she then told my Headmaster to look after our Philip. Malcolm and his Headmaster were impressed with the response, “you have a fan, my son.” The head told him that he had contacted his mother this morning to let her know. Mr Brown told him he would come to see Philip at nine thirty on Monday for his first lessons. He and the Headmaster went to see the Ward Sister to get her approval; they came back saying, “the teaching was going ahead, okay Philip.”
They left leaving Phil in shock, his mother and Sister came soon after the Head and Malcolm had left. He was still much in stress by all that had happened to him, One he had a writer’s Agent, Two an Editor, and Three a personal Teacher, He hid his face as he cried. Mum and Fay both took him into their arms, “why is everything happening to me, and why is everybody helping me so much.” “Son it is because they can see the elements of a talent trying to get itself seen and heard.” “Do you think so mum,” Fay spoke saying, “you are a potential genius with words, you silly ofe.” Two days later his Diary of what happened on that morning nearly four week ago was in the local paper and on the next Sunday It was in the National Sunday Press. He was having trouble taking all this in, and it was Nurse Jackie that was told to help him, “the sister told her he needs your support.” He knew that he shouldn’t get too emotionally close to her because one day the time will come to leave the hospital, but he was, in love with her.
Two days later he was given a Wheelchair and two mornings and three afternoons a week Phil had to go for physical training on his upper body, from that time he never had time to get board, what with all that schooling, writing and physical training. After another few weeks, mum had told him that the council had given them a bungalow, they were moving in two weeks, and then you can come home, “yes HOME! At last.” When the day came, and he was leaving, his emotions spilled over like a waterfall, even Jackie was in tears. He asked and begged her always remember me and come to see me, he made sure she had his phone number and address. She told him she could never forget him, and would keep in touch. She said, “I know I am six years older than you and that you are only fifteen a bit young for me, You will be sixteen soon, I love you dearly. I would like to carry on seeing you if your parents will allow it.” mum replied to her, “Jackie we are happy with you seeing our son, it is you and Fay that has got him through this ordeal.”
Philip went to the bungalow, his new home, he had a large bedroom with its self-contained bathroom, the whole place and all entrances were flat. His teacher Mr Brown still came three days a week he still went by Taxi twice a week to physical training, he was proud of his upper body physique. Jackie went out with Philip regularly, they often took Fay with them, the only thing that slowed this down was when she went back to Uni, she came home at regular intervals. She passed her Exams and went back to work at the same Large hospital where she had been nursing Philip.
Phil never did go back to school he worked well with Malcolm, and even when his schooling had finished, Malcolm carried on working with his student Philip, they were great friends. Philip had a few stories published in one of the Ladies magazines nearly every month; he regularly wrote for his local paper. When he was nineteen he had his first novel published, it was very popular with the young teens as well as the mothers, the stressful fighting involved in the story kept the dads happy in holiday reading. His earning were doing well; he was still courting Jackie, and they got engaged the year of his first novel and Married eighteen months later. Fay went to Nursing college and succeeded in becoming a trained Nurse. What started off as life in hell, changed to him having a good happy and successful life. Always move forward thinking how I can get the better of this, and use it to your advantage, think positively. May GOD bless all my readers. Bye.
ALL FICTION.
