We all love stories if they happen to be imaginative, novel or new.Yudhirsthir, my friend was a class act in that. I have never ever met someone in his league. What I just narrate is true and you might find it awkward to believe but it is true.
After school, there were a couple of guys who would sit on the brick wall of Labony Estate. Sometimes we would eat a plate of chowmein from Montuda, the street vendor who used to sell them there. In Kolkata, there is this concept that people from all ages would chat over a cup of tea or coffee and exchange ideas and views on the myriad topics of the world at large. In Bengali what we call the âaddahâ. We were in school then and we used to be in awe of the British and American technologies. We would chat and exchange the latest views of technology that would enhance our knowledge in science and sci-fi.
Yudhirsthir once told, âDo you know what technology the British possess?â
Amitayu said, âWhat?â
Yudhirsthir replied, âWell my maternal auntâs son who went to Manchester has said âIt is possible to turn a full-scale human being into the size of a âLilliput!â.â
Immediately we gobbled some of the tasty chowmein in order not to laugh.
Kaustuvsaid, âHow is it possible?â
Yudhirsthir replied, âWhen he was traveling in a double decker bus in Manchester that he realized that he along with the bus was becoming tiny as a toy bus along with all the human beings in it. Then again on returning from the city center, the bus was again scaled up into a normal bus.â
Then Kaustuv wickedly asked, âAre there giants too?â
Yudhirsthir gulped down a bit of chowmein and replied, âWell Kaushikda, remember him!â
We all said, âThe guy who used to play football well!â eagerly wanting him to continue.
He said, âYes,Yes!â
Then he said, âYeah, according to him, humans can be scaled up into giants as well!â
Yudhirsthir continued, âHe used to work for GE and he has said there is a planet of giants where humans can visit and they would be scaled up into giants too! One human being would have the strength of a hundred elephantsâ
Kaustuv had added, âToo much of Gulliverâs travels donât you think!â
Amitayu had said, âHybridization of Gulliverâs Travels!â
I had said, âOh ho! Donât pester him, man!â
Another time, Yudhirsthir would say, âDo you know why there is no drought in the UK?â
I had asked, âWhyâ
Yudhirsthir had said, âWell they have invented the aeroplane that would drag clouds to anywhere! So that there would be rain over the drought hit areas.â
Sourav had asked, âWho is the genius who thought of this?â
I had quipped, âMaybe it was Yudhirsthir!â
Yudhirsthir had replied, âDonât worry I will do it when I grow up!â
The next time when we had assembled Yudhirsthir told another unique story.
He said, âDo you know that there are multiple worlds and it is possible to travel from one world to another faster than the speed of light.â
We had winked at each other secretly and listened in awe to what Yudhirsthir had to say.
âHow do you think that is possible? By Rockets?â asked Amitayu.
âNope, dear!â said Yudhirsthir.
He then continued, âWell the concept of portals I guess!â Then he left us saying his mom was expecting him.
Later on, he would again say, âSuppose there is a technology that would help us create the city of Kolkata under water?â
I had asked, âthen how would expect the people to breathe, or see or eat under water?â
He had said, âWell, they will insert small devices in their eyes that would help people to see under waterâ
âThink that is it possible to live inside the bubble that would help them breathe!â he said.
âI know it is possible to light a flare under water, the flare along with some heat might be essential to cook under waterâ he continued.
âWho gave you this idea man? The concept of the watery world!â enquired Amitayu.
Kaustuv said, âMust have been Souravda! Yudhirsthirâs bosom friend, philosopher, and guide!â
We all laughed at that.
While traveling in an auto-rickshaw, Yudhirsthir had once said, âSuppose we invent a technology that would help the auto-rickshaw travel across the cities of different continents. Here again the concept of the portalsâ
I had said, âWe all know you are imaginative! Spare us from those please!â
âSuppose there are multiple cities like Kolkata in different places of the earth!â Yudhirsthir said.
âAnd in which countries would that be?â asked Sourav.
âWell, there are 67 countries to be precise and there some maybe in US,UK, France, Sweden, Mauritius, Eygpt, South Africa, Korea, Ukraine, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Brazil, Cambodia, Ghana, China, Netherlands, Italy or Spain!â
âBut the people would be different! I mean your neighbor in Kolkata would be same in the city of Kolkata in the US?â
Yudhirsthir countered, âWell there are multiple sets of people who are lookalikes living in the city of Kolkata in all the different parts of the world!â
Amitayu countered, âIs it why they restricted the research on stem cells?â
âIf there could be multiple âDollyâ the sheep, then why not multiple Amitayusâ!â replied Yudhirsthir.
Everyone laughed as Amitayu turned purple with anger and then replied, âWell, as such we have to bear up with one Yudhirsthir and his stories, I can only imagine if there were multiple Yudhirsthirsâ.â
Peals of laughter followed. Yudhirsthir didnât like that a bit so he left in a huff.
Yudhirsthir once told, âIt is possible to walk on air!â with such authenticity that everyone was taken aback. Then again he said, âIt is possible to wrench out your soul and put it in a plastic body!â
âThen how will you digest your food?â asked Ayan.
âWell!â-he said and scratched his head and replied, âYou can digest your food using Pentium five!â
Everyone had a good laugh.
We had to admire his ingenuity when he said, âIn future, there will be a fan that will be without blades yet generate cool breeze!â
âThe air conditioners are there so whatâs the big deal!â countered Kaustav.
Yudhirsthir said âIt would be a fan and not an air conditioner! Itâs different you knowâ.
Well, one of the funniest thing that he said was, âIt is possible to make a person think what they want!â
Kaustav asked, âAnd how is that possible?â
âIn England, they plant small organic robots in the food. If once gulped would reach the digestive system and then would reach the blood capillaries where they would transmit the pictures to the supercomputers in the laboratory! Scallops is the name of the robotic device they invented in Germany which almost does that, you fools!â
Everyone laughed out loudly. However, the concept of Scallops is true! After all who will have these ingenious ideas apart from Yudhirsthir. Another time he said, âIt is possible to live inside the computer or a cell phone in a simulated world made of virtual reality!â It was imagination at its best.
One day he asked, âDo you know why they name the TATA car âIndica?â
Everyone eager to know why asked, âWhy?â
He replied, âIt is derived from the word âAndaâ-ka which in hindi meant âeggsâ!â
Amitayu asked, âDo you implied it is made of eggs?â
Yudhirsthir replied, âNot eggs but egg shells!â correcting him firmly.
We couldnât but laugh! Later on, we found that Yudhirsthirâs driver pronounced it as âAndakaâ instead of Indica and understood from where this story originated from.
Well, we had time and again asked Yudhirsthir what he would like to become when he grew up!
Yudhirsthir had time and again scratched his head and replied, âWell, let us see!â
Later on, after a bit of cajoling, he had replied, âI want to become a Spy!â
Amitayu asked, âWhy?â
Yudhirsthir replied, âBecause now you can store 90GB data in a bacteria. And I intend to take ten of those and enter NASA and steal their secrets.â
We winked at each other and I said, âWhich scientist has discovered it?â
Unfortunately, he had noticed that we had winked and spoke in with much disdain saying, âWell, search the internet and you will find that the scientist from Hong Kong has done this!â
Fortunately, this is true we later found out.
âBut how will you take those bacteria, you can only even see them barely!â said Amitayu.
Yudhirsthir said, âI will mold them in a round mold and place it on the tip of my nostrilsâ
I countered, âSuppose you have stored the data in the bacteria and then while coming out of NASA you snort those in by mistake. Then would you become a genius, by assimilating this 900 GB data in your brain!â
Everyone started laughing.
Yudhirsthir replied, âWho said I am not a genius!â
âAnyway, good observation, I didnât think of that!â he replied.
Kaustuv said, âAt least, you can start picking your nose in public if you want to have the habit of doing that in NASA!â
Again this was followed by peals of laughter. We all know but could Yudhirsthir ever tell a lie?
On a Sunday, when we actually finished our tuition classes and were returning home, we met Yudhirsthir. He said, âHave you ever heard of the civilization in the sun?â
We said, âYou mean the âCivilization of the sun!â We were thinking that it might be the civilization of the Incaâs. But what he went on to say is really hilarious.
âNo, No you ignorant fools! I mean the civilization in the sun!â
We clamored, âHow can there be a civilization in the sun? It is too hot there!â
What he went on to say we couldnât fathom!
Yudhirsthir insisted, âThere is one, and people can go there and it even rains there!â
Who would not laugh? But he would still tell these stories when he liked.
Who would argue with him? A genius is a genius, even if it is in terms of imagination and story-telling!
After watching the âLord of the Ringsâ Yudhirsthirâs imagination spread wings and he said, âCan you think of a technology that will mimic your home environment in the underworld?â
Sourav who was listening intensely, looked away from Yudhirsthir and winked at me and said, âHow do you mean!â
Yudhirsthir continued, âSuppose one day you wake up and find that you are in a house that is just like the one you live in, I mean it is exactly the same but created out of virtual environment!â
I said, âHow is it possible?â
Yudhirsthir said, âIt is possible, brother, it is possible!â
Then he continued, âWell, then suppose you are going to the school and you descend down the stairs from your home, well you are actually descending down into the underworld. Then when you walk into the underworld it is actually very dark, yet it seems that it is illuminated with light. Then suddenly you meet the beast of the underworld, who actually spits saliva very near you and since you are waiting for the bus you are static, the beast will actually ignore you and move on in search of his prey! Then you catch the bus and actually go to school! Everything will appear normal except for the fact that the single human who will watch this will actually step on its saliva and slips a little, giving you the hint that this is actually the underworld!â
Peals of laughter followed, and we actually said, âYudhirsthir, what a story!â
Yet, he looked on and said, âWell this is the truth man!â
Yudhirsthir once went to Puri. Well, Puri is famous for its splendid beach and the Jagannath Temple. On returning from Puri he went on to tell a story that I will never forget. He said, âWell there is a train from Howrah station which turns into a rocket and travels to a space station in the sky!â Well, Amitayu asked, âHow did you understand that?â
The reply was, âItâs my sixth sense, you know!â
Kaustuv said, âWhat else?â
We smiled thinking what else could be imagined. He then said, âWell, the Jagannath temple was actually floating in the air!â
Kaustavand Amitayu smiled. But I could control my laughter so I turned around and was laughing like anything although without making any noise since that would annoy Yudhirsthir who was in the middle of something interesting.
âThe sea waves were artificially generated in Puri!â even the fishermen would bring in fish that was not naturalâ concluded Yudhirsthir and then said, âI will tell later more interesting thingsâ and he left.
Yudhirsthir once told, âYou know you can recreate the world around you exactly in your mind. You can physically enter your mind by traveling in a miniature car and travel out by getting inside a world made out of potatoes.â
He said, âThey can create a mango orchard in a potato using virtual reality and virtual environment. There are also ghosts in that Mango Orchard, who interact with peopleâ.
We all started laughing on hearing that, but he said, âItâs the truth, the truth and nothing but the truth!â
Can Yudhirsthir ever lie? The onus remains on you to find out. Let me know what you make and think of these.
