Chapter 1
Gazing around, her sapphire blue eyes caught the sight of glistening white, dusting the forest. The shimmering powder was freezing beneath her padded toes, her claws ripping at the soft substance as she wandered along a buried track. Nearly all the game would be in hibernation now, the only way to eat was to steal the kill off a pack or fight the elk herds alone. Since winter began, Flare had grown extremely thin that her ribs were beginning to show. Her light grey pelt was lightly dusted in the powder snow giving her a slight camouflage. Somewhere nearby Flare heard a stick snap. However, unsure of the direction it came from, she continued on her way catching the cent of an elk herd. Tracking in the snow was extremely difficult as new powder fell on the scent, covering it. Not even her powerful nose would be able to detect it. Again, Flare caught the sound of something stalking her. Giving up on the herd, Flare bolted hoping that whatever was following her would stop. As she ran, snow fell off her coat and was deposited on her tracks. Behind her seeral bounds were approaching. Taking a sharp left arond an old willow, Flare ran onto the frozen creek. Beneath her paws the thin ice creaked as if threatening to dump her in the numbing water below. Realizing her mistake, she tried to get off the ice but every attempt she made left her struggling on thinning ice. Looking at the bank she just retreated from, standing in the muddy snow were two male wolves. The firt was quite largewith a black pelt, eyes ice cold. While the second was her size with a chocolate coat with piercing yellow eyes. Both were staring at her. Loud cracks beneath Flare's paws signified trouble, with each movement the ice turned into a spiderweb. As she rose, Flare slowly crawled towards the old willow all the while the ice threatened doom. Both the males ran to the willow, the first started advancing on the ice offering assitance while the second paced and whined. Leaning forward towards the other wolf, he grabbed the scruff of her neck and half dragged half aided her off the ice. Now safely upon the sodden ground, Flare shook her saviour free and growled. With her hackles raised, she tried to run pass the strangers only to be knocked down.
"What do you want?" Flared snarled, barring her sharp fangs.
"To know why a female is all alone in winter," replied the first wolf showing aggression.
"Sorry to distrupt you," began the second wolf, "my brother and I didn't mean to startle you."
Looking at the wolf that just spoke, Flare replied, "that's fine, can I go now?"
"Most certainly not!" Barked both males, their presence grew more dominant as their eyes ignited in fury.
Ignoring them, Flare lunged at the large male, pinning him underneath her bulk. The pair rolled and their pelts became saturated as they rolled through the fresh snow.
"Enough!" Bellowed the second, his voice echoing through the dense forest. "Shadow leave her alone!"
Startled at the sudden aggression the smaller wolf showed, both Flare and Shadoe froze before seperating.
"But Flame," Shadow whinned.
"But nothing Shadow," Flame retorted.
It was clear that Flame was the alpha out of the brothers, his chocolate fur was smooth and silky while Shadow's was mattered. Turning to her, Flame asked, "What is your name?" his yellow eyes gazing into her sapphire blue eyes.
"Flare," she replied, tensing as Shadow walked up beside her lightly grazing his hide against her side.
"Walk with us," Shadow stated, "and it's not a question." He added before she could argue any further. The forest was falling silent as the day came to a close while the night became rich with wonder. As the three traveled through the engulfing darkness they eventually arrived at a clearing. It was relatively small but still big enough for the three to fit quite cozy. The clearing was illuminated by the full moon. Flare was led to the middle of the clearing, the lush grass tickled her toes, where the moon became a giant spotlight on her.
Chapter 2
The blood chilling howls that answered the piercing howls of the brothers was gut wrenching. Howls echoed from every direction, increasing with volume as the owners approached. With in minutes beasts emerged from the surroundings, eyes of green, gold, blue, brown and violet shone through the shadows. Eyes fixed on her.
"Who is this?" A female appeared from the shadows, her vibrant violet eyes gazed at Flare while she spoke. The female's pelt shone crimson as the moonlight reflected off her.
"This is Flare," replied Shadow. He looked down, avoiding the female's gaze.
"We found her near the frozen creek," added Flame.
"Well Flare, whether you like it or not," the wolf stepped closer to her as if waiting for a reation, "you are to prove your loyalty the same way as everyone else."
Flame nudged Flare's flank, gesturing for her to follow the pack.
The pack moved swiftly as a whole and Flare was trapped in the middle being escorted back to the den. She kept stumbling on exposed root systems entangled in the worn track. On numerous occasions the wolves behind her snarled is she slowed even slightly. Shadow was leading the rear of the pack while Flame was out of sight. There was at least ten wolves that met at the clearing but the numbers seemed to have doubled as more distance was covered. Around her the trees began to thin, allowing the moon to penetrate the forest floor, creating a luminous white glow as it mirrored off the snow. Ahead was a large sheer cliff, rocky ledges protruding with scavengers soaring high above the surface. At the rocky base, several dark pelted wolves trailed from the edge as the pack arrived. All the wolves herded her to the bottom of the cliff where a large mouth opened to a stone pit. Inside wolves were fighting, the howls of anguish sounded as their opponents became victorious. The victorious wolf bowed as the pack entered, clearly the alpha was with her, its eyes wild and untamed as they met hers. Once she made the descent into the death trap, several wolves barred her escape route. The opposing wolf stared her down, circling her. Its fur mattered with blood, its jaws dripping with blood and saliva as it lunged at her. Jumping back, the wolf landed at her feet snarling. Flare lifted her paws and clubbed the other wolf, raking her claws across the side of its face. Roaring, the beast rose but Flare had already sunk her teeth into its throat, increasing pressure until she felt the familiar crunch of the trachea. The wolf fell limp in her grip. Irony blood filled her taste buds, disgusted, Flare spat out the corpse and blood. Stones crumbled and tumbled down the slope as the female approached her. "Well done, Flare," her purple eyes glistened in the shadows, "you're now part of the pack. Who wants her?" She howled so all males could hear. Several responses answered her, this was clearly thr beta female. "The winner gets her," she called back.
The battle which unfolded in front of her was gruesome. Yelping, howling, growling, snarling and barking bounced off every crease and crevice causing her ears to wince. Pools of blood created a blood bath as wolves rolled in the sickly fluid. Two wolves were left circling each other over the deceased. Shadow and Flame were howling applause at the warriors, Flare was stuck sitting beside the beta female watching the bloody fight unfold. Teeth ripped open flesh, blood gushed into drying pools. The victor tossed his dead pack mate aside and threw his head back and released a deep victorious howl. Other wolves in the arena howled their content at the brutal fight. Relishing in victory, the wolf trotted up to Flare and the beta female. His pelt was silver but stained with a deep red, his eyes were an earthy green flecked with yellow that gazed into the depth of hers. "Flare, this is Silver. Your new mate," the beta female said, gesturing Flare to stand and follow the winner. Just as she was leaving, Flare noticed many wolves slinking down to the dead, dragging them away in greedy jaws. "What have I done?" Flare thought, "They’re cannibals.
Chapter 3
Silver led her away from the rest of the pack to his own den. It was covered in moss and was located beneath a large conifer. The needle leaves prevented any snow from entering the small opening in the exposed root system. Growling, Flare backed away from the wolf and the den. Sensing what was about to happen, Silver leapt into the shadows of the conifer while Flare continued her growling display. She knew that if she tried to run her blood would be hunted down but if she stayed she would meet her fate. Deciding to take the risk, Flare ducked into the shadows; her light grey pelt turned black while her sapphire blue eyes turned purple. Not a pale purple like the beta female, but instead pure amethyst. Slinking through the engulfing shadows, Flare founf Silver easily. his silver pelt provided him no camouflage unlike her. As he turned around at her sudden presence, she pounced, sinking her razor teeth into his vunerable throat. Upon impact his neck snapped and dripped in blood. Stepping over the corpse, Flare stalked through the forest with her jaws drooling with the sticky red liquid. The path she selected was over grown and covered in deep snow. Shrilling, blood thirsty howls alarmed behind her clearly alerting the pack of her deed. Quickening her pace, Flare travelled along the frosted brush as not to disrupt the snow pact.
Powering through the night, Flare dodged the grasp of the Northern pack and their ubsurd tactics. Wolves that desperate they consume their own kind. Images of the bloody battle filled her sight, glazing her purple eyes at the shear thought of the chaos. It was disappointing that the spell had worn off. She quite liked being a normal wolf and not what everyone knew her as. Her parents lived her up to her reputation. She got that sick of it she had to leave, had to refresh her life and begin a new one. The spell the enchantress cast on her broke when she revealed her true self.
As dawn approached, the atmosphere grew eery as she approached the pasture. Here was the tricky part, getting past without being seen. Without the realm detecting her failed quest.
"Destroy the pack, avenge ours and you'll be free," those words the enchantress spoke were haunting her. She couldn't return. If she did her parents would seal her fate. She couldn't bear the thought of that mongreal Ash getting his paws on her. All because her parents wanted to strengthen their alliance with the Easten pack. It made her blood boil and vile stick to the back of her throat. The enchantress wouldn't send her home if she found out that she had failed. Would she? All she had to do was kill the alpha and his mate and her life would be back to normal. Lot harder than she had anticipated.
Chapter 4
Flare travelled to the extensive mountain range which stretched across the central of the vast land. The tllest mountain had a swirl of smoke hovering around it and climbing it took considerable care. A steep, rocky path wound up the mountain, parts of the trail had fallen away. As Flare climbed the mountain, she found evidence of a recent battle. Frame of the attackers were painted on a wall of balck, blackened skeleton pieces lie scattered down the cliff while huge claw marks lined the scene. "Pathetic human," she growled as she hurried through the disaster zone. Further up the mountain Flare found sraps of steel and iron littered around a large cave entrance. Here the realm was at its strongest. Standing in the entrance of the cave, Flare threw her head back and let out a piercing howl which echoed through the cave. Her call was answered by a large red eye glowing back at her. Deep rumbling shook stone from the wall while claws dragged upon solid stone. "Who are you and do you challenge?" A female's voice answered.
"It's Flare, Yona," Flare called giving a slight bow, "I am not here to challenge. I'm here to report that I failed."
"And now you seek assitance, am I correct Flare?" Yona asked, heavy footsteps raked into the sunlight. In front of Flare was a huge dragon. Yona was black with white stripes across her back, nack, wings and tail. Her beastly jaws contained many teeth built for crushing and ripping prey apart, claws designed for tearing anything to ribbons. Yona was the last enchantress alive and ruled the lands she could see from her mountain home. Yona crouched so that her scaly chest was resting against her sharp talons and stratched one wing to the ground. Flare's eyes widened, she knew what was about to occur and it was the complete opposite to her travel methods.
Perched delicately between Yona's enormous wings, Flare's purple eyes were wide as the wind whipped at her fur, threatening to blow her off the reptile's scaly back. Below her the forests sped by as Yona powered towards the Northern terrain. Above the dragon, the sun's harsh rays left a dark shadow racing across the lush canopy. Ahead the ragged cliff face loomed, its walls steep and unclimable. Yona began making her descent, slowly circling the clearing Flare had been in hours ago. WHen the dragon landed, trees snapped and prey scattered as the downward push of her wings blew the snow from the area. Safetly upon solid ground, Flare lept off the scaly hide and tumbled into the shrubs.
"No time for games," Yona rumbled as she made steady pace for the pack. Flare followed, seeking shelter from the sun beneath the large reptile. The dense forestvparted as the enchantress cast her magic, allowing her to pass. All the words were spoken in some unknown language that was clearly not spoken anymore. Through the thinning trees, Flare could see many wolves baying as the pair approached. Loud howls filled the air. Their eyes focused on her, eyes set to kill.
Chapter 5
Yona was well hidden against the trees, looking around Flare couldn't see the dragon but could sense she was still nearby.
"What's a Princess doing so far away from her pack?" This was the beta female, taunting her. Wanting her to close the gap.
"Finish a deed," Flare snarled, then lunged at the female. The pair locked in combat, teeth tearing at flesh, blood spilling across the snow. The excitement enticed Yona from her cover. Breaking her camouflage, Yona stepped forward, the ground shaking at every step and let out a sickening roar.
"What have you done!" Yelped the beta female as the enchantress enclosed the wolves against the cliff.
"Sealing a deal, Tamia," Yona growled before sending wolves sprawling with a swipe of her claws. Wolves lay slayed at the base of the cliff, some torn in half by Yona's talons. Flare pounced on Tamia's back, sending the two wolves rolling. The crimson wolf clubbed her snout as she sunk her teeth into Tamia's hind leg. Flare began to violently shake Tamia, treating her as a rag doll. Flare's silky soft pelt grew mattered with mud and blood of both her's and Tamia's. Tamia managed to throw Flare aside, her skull cracking against a large boulder.
"Time to die, your highness," Tamia snarled, making her final lunge at Flare. Closing her eyes, Flare awaited her fate. But her fate never came, instead a high-pitched howl ripped through the feverish blood lust. Snapping her purple eyes open, she found that Tamia was hanging from Yona's jaws, blood gushing onto the reddening slush. All around wolves lay scattered in pools, the air reeked of flesh and blood. One wolf remained, the chocolate pelted emerged from the stone arena. His yellow eyes, usually fierce and dominant, were now full of sorrow and despair. He walked out of the cave and trotted up to the boulder and jumped on it, he stood on the rock and faced the enormous reptile. The wolf threw his head back and released a long mournful howl for his murdered mate.
Flare stuggled to stand upon her tired limbs, the male jumped down from his rock and stood beside her, supporting her weight as she limped away from the scene. "Hello Flare, Yona," the wolf greeted.
"Greetings Flame," replied Yona, "you're finally free with a chance to start your very own pack." the dragon made a slight gesture at Tamia's body and the deceased pack. "You're also free Flare but on one condition."
"What's that?" Flare grimaced as she lifted her head, her neck was slashed with deep wounds but nothing too serious.
"Stay with Flame, you will both be safe in each others company." Yona replied, the dragon opened her large wings and climbed to many heights in the golden sky..
Flare and Flame escaped the Northern Territory and fled to the central of the lands. Their territory was in the mountainous ranges of Yona's land. Many months past until a new summer arrived where in the depths of a cozy den were the tell-tale signs of youngsters. Five new pack members were introduced to the peaceful environment that Flame and Flare created for them.
