This morning I woke up in a different frame of mind than I usually do. The last few weeks, I have been in kind of a funk – mostly because I really have really been struggling just to find meaning in the day-to-day routine of life. There are probably many reasons that I have come to this point – and I certainly don’t mean to say this like ‘Oh woe is me, life has no meaning, bring out the violins’ context – because I know life has meaning – and I know who giver of life is, and have a personal relationship with him (although I must be honest, I have been ignoring my friend, as of late). No, it’s just that, for me, life seems to be lacking passion. I really believe that to be ‘on top of one’s game’ – to be full of life and loving life, one has to follow one’s passion. I’ve been there before – not nearly as often as I would like – and have real passion about what you are doing makes all the difference in the world.
Don’t get me wrong. The current job I have has many, many perks – among those is a really great salary, a lot of freedom, and good working hours – just to name a few. But while the people who work for me do great work – and I do my best to try and inspire them (and based on the products they develop I think I think my leadership skills are above average), my current position doesn’t really inspire passion – actually it causes a lot of frustration. I really think that’s because I’m in a position where the customers I work for really lack any vision and are very content just to ‘muddle through’ life.
But I don’t want to just ‘muddle through’ life. I’m so over ‘just muddling through’! I want to regain the passion that I once had with the life, and the work I do – and the life I live.
So I guess I have to start by asking myself “O.K. Dave, so what really ‘gets you going’? What could you be so passionate about?
The first thing that comes to mind is exactly what I’m doing right now – writing. I absolutely love to write. I’ll write anything – from academic papers to magazine articles, to creative writing, and anything in-between. I just love being able to put my thoughts down on a written page – it is such a catharsis for me. It’s absolutely great and wonderful that others read my different papers – and I love getting great feedback, but even if I didn’t I would still write – it is a real passion of mine, and from today, I am making a vow to follow that passion.
I’m also passionate about leadership. Leadership – a word that people throw around a lot because just the mere mention of the word tends to conjure up a lot of debate and passion. It’s also a subject that most people that hold management positions are absolutely clueless about – because leadership is NOT about management of things or ‘resources’ – it deals with real live human beings, and how to coach and guide them to get the very best performance from them. Real, caring, leadership is hard work.
Two other passions – one is my love of cycling (worthy of separate blog all together) and a love of Christian spirituality – living out God’s grace. I really think that one of the huge problem’s in today’s Christian church is most people who profess to be Christians (and I am not even going to be the judge of who is or is not a follower of Christ – that is between the individual and God – and I am not even going to pretend I can get into someone’s head) is that, even for sincere follower’s of Christ, a great majority of Christians are not concerned about living their Christianity and showing God’s grace to others on a daily basis. I count myself among them – I get so caught up in the meaningless daily rituals of life that I forget that one of the most important tasks of life is to show God’s grace and compassion to others. So that is another passion that I’m going to follow from this day forward.
I’m not sure where all of this will lead – but I know in my heart that I need to start to move out and follow my passions, because I am absolutely so tired of living an uninspired life.
