It was the last day of high school. Amber Foster was in her bedroom brushing her blond hair getting ready for school. Her step sister Josephine Hart came into her bedroom. “I have some exciting news,” said Josephine with a big smile on her face. “What is it?” asked Amber. “Dad wants us to have dinner with him at the Villa Restaurant Friday night,” said Josephine. “Us as in you and me?” asked Amber. “Yes,” said Josephine. “Awesome,” said Amber with excitement.
Josephine and Amber were sitting in the car at Villa Restaurant. “This is so exciting,” said Amber as she checked her make up. Josephine started to get out of the car but stopped when she noticed her dad Allen Hart getting out of his car with Marlene Hampton, her two daughters Misty and Lilly Johnson. “Joey, what is wrong?” asked Amber. “Look over there,” said Josephine. “You have got to be freaking kidding,” said Amber noticing Allen holding Marlene’s hand and her two daughters following.
Josephine and Amber went into the Villa Restaurant and walked up to the table where Allen and the others were sitting. “Hi dad,” said Josephine. “Dad,” said Misty with a surprised look on her face. “Yes, dad, wasn’t the last name Hart a clue?” asked Josephine. “I was thinking maybe your uncle or something like that. Dad, this is going to be so weird,” said Misty. “And why is that?” asked Amber putting her hands on her hips. “Both of you just stop,” shouted Josephine storming off. “I will go talk to her,” said Amber starting to walk off. “Amber, stop, give her chance to be by herself and think about things,” said Allen. “Ok,” said Amber with a sigh as she sat down at the table.
Josephine walked over to a bench outside of the restaurant. Her music teacher Wilson Stephens was sitting on the bench. “Mr. Stephens, what are you doing here?” asked Josephine. “I am waiting on Naomi,” said Wilson. “Mr. Stephens,” said Josephine putting a smile on her face. “Not a word to anyone, Ms. Hart, or you will get an f,” said Wilson. “I promise I won’t say a word,” said Josephine. “Now, that we got that out of the way. What is bothering you, Ms. Hart?” asked Wilson. “My dad is seeing Misty’s mom and it so weird,” said Josephine sitting down beside Wilson. “Let me, ask you something Ms. Hart. When you and Ms. Johnson are no longer in high school is that going to change your perspective?” asked Wilson. Josephine sat there with a blank expression on her face and didn’t answer Wilson’s question. “Do you see what is happening Ms. Hart?” asked Wilson. “Not really,” said Josephine with a confused look on her face. “Think about it very carefully, Ms. Hart,” said Wilson. “Oh-my-gosh, I am letting a high school reputations influence me; an influence that could ruin the opportunity to make a new best friend or even a step sister relationship should my dad decide to marry Marlene,” said Josephine. “Very good, Ms. Hart,” said Wilson. “Thank you, Mr. Stephens,” said Josephine standing up. “Ms. Hart, don’t forget what I told you, “ said Wilson. “Not a word,” said Josephine putting a smile on her face.
Josephine went back into the restaurant and sat down beside Amber. “Now that everyone is here; me and Marlene has an announcement to make. We are getting married,” said Allen. Amber, Lilly, and Misty stared at each other. Josephine raised up her glass of tea. “I would like to propose a toast to my dad and Marlene’s marriage,” said Josephine. Everybody at the table clinked their glasses together.
Josephine was in the kitchen eating a bowl a cereal. Amber came into the kitchen and poured a cup of coffee. “Me and Misty are going to hang out for a while this afternoon. Would you like to come?” asked Josephine. “I would like to but I am going to clean up day and hang out with Korey,” said Amber sitting down beside Josephine.
“So, how is everything going with Jason?” asked Amber. “I don’t know, we are probably going to break-up,” said Josephine with a sigh. “What?” exclaimed Amber. “Jason, is talking about going to college in Oklahoma,” said Josephine. “I am sorry,” said Amber leaning over and hugging Josephine. “It’s ok, we were just not meant to be together,” said Josephine. “Don’t worry, when you start college you will find a new boyfriend,” said Amber with a smile on her face. “I know, but it won’t be the same,” said Josephine with a tear rolling down her cheek. “Joey, what is wrong?” asked Amber. “It’s just that Jason was my first crush. Ever once in awhile he did say I love you. Even though he only said it ever once in awhile he made it up by doing something silly, and I am going to miss that,” said Josephine starting to cry. “Oh, Joey,” I am sorry,” said Amber leaning over and hugging Josephine again. “I will be fine,” said Josephine.
Korey Hunter, Amber’s boyfriend pulled up and blowed the horn. “Your ride is here,” said Josephine to Amber. “Are you going to be ok?” asked Amber with a concerned look on her face. “I will be fine, just go enjoy hanging out with Korey,” said Josephine. “Call me if you need anything,” said Amber getting up from the kitchen table. “I will,” said Josephine. “Promise,” said Amber. “I promise,” said Josephine. “Pinky swear,” said Amber. “Get out of here,” said Josephine with a smile on her face. “Pinky swear,” said Amber. “Ok, Pinky swear, now get out of here,” said Josephine.
Amber was sitting on a picnic table in the backyard staring up at the sky. “Is there a problem Ms, Foster?” asked Wilson standing at the white picket fence. Amber got off the picnic table and walked over to the fence. “I was just thinking graduation ceremony is Friday night, and all the changes that are taking place like Joey’s dad getting married, a new little brother or sister, and you moving,” said Amber. “I am not moving Ms. Foster,” said Wilson. “You are not, but I saw a moving van yesterday,” said Amber. “I will be right back, there is someone I want you to meet,” said Wilson. Amber stood at the fence as Wilson went into the house. Wilson and Naomi came out of the house and walked over to the fence. “Ms. Foster, I want to you to meet my fiancee Naomi,” said Wilson. “Fiancee,” said Amber with a surprise look on her face. “Yes, Ms.Foster, I proposed to her Friday Night,” said Wilson. “Congratulations,” said Amber with a big smile on her face.
Amber went back and sat down on the picnic table after visiting a few minutes with Wilson and Naomi. Misty carrying a backpack walked up to where Amber was sitting and sat down beside her. “Joey invited me to spend the night,” said Misty. “That’s cool,” said Amber. “You know it is weird we have spent our high school years worrying about our reputation, the people that we associate with, and now just as we graduate, the ones we would not associate with are fixing to become stepsisters,” said Misty. “I know it is weird, but you know what?,” asked Amber getting off of the picnic table. “What?” asked Misty. “When school starts again in the fall there will be someone to pick up where we left and they will kick your Oakridge Valley smart mouth butts,” said Amber. Misty got off the table and put her hands on her hips. “Is that fact you Piney Point flunkie,” said Misty. Both girls started laughing and walked into the house.
