Almost 30 years back, my father moved to Delhi in search of livelihood. He started off with a small private firm. The pay was not that good, and he had to plan out things to spend that money only on our basic necessities, if something does not come under that basic necessity, then he never wastes a minute to refute. I was 4 years old, but I could feel that miserable environment. But, I did not regret this because I knew my father thought of a bright future for us. Saving every penny for education and home, which were at that time looked like a daunting task to fulfill. We also did our bit by refuting any school picnics, denying most wanted purchases, and even by not asking for a 1 rupee toffee. And really, that does not deprive us of anything. To live a beautiful life, you need a heart full of satisfaction and happiness, not a pocket full of money.
From starting, I used to be that person who remains anxious for every little thing. I still remember the very first day of my school. One day back, I was continuously thinking how a school would look like and what kind of things we would do in a school. With the time, I got to know that school is all about competition, good marks, and some unprecedented, weird rules, which I bounded to follow. The rules were to purchase notebook with 300 pages and to use ink pens. They had their own logic behind that:
• Logic1: Students can take notes of entire session in a single notebook. They can easily avoid an extra burden of maintaining multiple notebooks. But, my father had issues with it. He would purchase notebook with lesser pages and tell me I will purchase another once it got filled up. I always remained in a dilemma whether to listen to my father or teacher. Adding to this, my father used to sew up the unused pages of the last year’s notebook to make a new one for the next year. My teacher would always have that complaint of not following this so called rule because I did use those stitched notebooks.
• Logic2: Students can improvise on their hand writing by using ink pen. My father told me “what’s the point in using ink pen when one can use a ball point pen, with lesser price, to write. After all, the purpose is to write, not to showcase the brand of any ink pen. I again hooked up to the dilemma whether to listen to my father or teacher.
The lesson which I learnt is to put focus on the purpose than to comply with additional carriage for fulfilling the purpose.
Better Focus on Purpose(shipra)
