In the halls of a school in a far away place.
Stood a girl so smart she seemed out of place.
She was courageous
She was kind
She believed in a world where there was no wrong or right.
Though they thought she was crazy, down right insane.
She kept her head up high and never let the voices reign.
As the months went on she began to get worn down.
She stopped trying to make her dream come true,
Started walking with a crowd.
She wanted to fit in, no longer thrown aside.
But was it worth the neglecting of her heart,
or the forced indoctrination on her mind?
For four years this is how she lived her life.
But high school was over, this was the end of the line.
Now she needed a beginning to her new life,
write a new story, change up the lines.
But she could never begin anew without finishing her old.
Welcome to the journey of a girl finding her soul.
“Awake my child ” a voice whispered. Laila got up and looked around the room half asleep but when she saw no one she put her head back against the pillow.
“Listen to me child I know what you seek”
Though she could not see who it was she decided to reply.
“Who are you and why can’t I see you” she asked a little spooked.
“I am your guardian, sent here to help a lost soul and that lost soul was you. ”
“What do you mean you know what I seek?”
“You need to find yourself child.”
“I am not lost I don’t need to be found”
“No my child you have strayed from the path of thine own heart.” Her guardian explained. “Do you not remember the world you once wanted?”
Laila remembered her freshman year in high school, she remembered wanting a world where no one was judged because of their opinions.
“I was young and stupid, I am older now”
“No you are foolish now, you are no longer you, you are now who people want you to be, you no longer follow your dreams”
*I wonder how she knows so much about me? Maybe she is telling the truth, but how will she help me?* Laila thought to herself.
“What do you want me to do guardian?”
“Embark on a journey on which you seek your true self. You will encounter the unmovable rock, a fork in the road, and the fountain of truth in that order. All of these will help you find who you truly are."
“When does my journey begin”
“At the first sight of sunlight you must leave and begin your journey. Now I want you to sleep you will need your rest. Don’t forget that when the guardian of the gate asks you what you seek tell him you seek your soul.”
Laila slept peacefully that night with no more disturbances. When she woke she remembered the “dream” she had. Laila knew it wasn't a dream, because her guardian had left a note that said:
*Never stray from the path of thine own heart.*
Laila smiled to herself then began to pack for her Journey. She stepped outside and on the path in front of her house stood a golden gate. It was the most magnificent thing she had ever seen, she walked up to the gate, in less then a second a voice like thunder asked.
“What do you seek? ”
“I seek my soul.” She answered quickly remembering what her guardian had said. The gate swung open revealing three paths heading in different directions. The first showed the picture of a rock, the second showed a picture of a forest, and the third was blocked off. Laila remembered the first was the unmovable rock so she went along the path that showed the rock. Two long tiring hours later she came upon a huge rock about the same size of her. A green girl covered in body art and leaves came out of hiding.
“I am the guardian of the rock, what is your business here?”
“I am laila and I seek to find who I am”
“Well you may pass if you can move the unmovable rock”
“But” laila began “it is unmovable, how will i move it?”
“You can not move the unmovable rock silly girl, it is unmovable, meaning it can not be moved” a choir of voices taunted.
Laila remembered how she loved doing things that seemed impossible, but she was always made fun of for it. This angered her so she walked up to the rock and lifted with all her might. And the rock moved. it was light as if the inside was hollow. The green girl clapped and danced.
“You moved the rock, you moved the rock”
“But how? How did I move the unmovable rock?”
“The rock is not unmovable Laila, all you had to do was believe that you could do it, and you did, now you may continue on your journey.”
Laila walked off with a smile on her face, she was happy she had passed the first test. Now she had to find a fork in the road. It didn't take her too long to find either. A old lady walked up to her.
“In front of you are two villagers, one can not lie and comes from the village of truth, and one can not tell the truth, he is from the village of lies. Figure out who is who and you will be able to continue on your way, you need to go through the village of truth. That is the way to the fountain of truth. You have two chances, fail both and you will be stuck here forever.”
Laila didn't want to be stuck there forever so she studied the men. if she asked what was the right direction then they would both point different directions. And she could not ask just one because she had no idea who was who. She finally made her decision.
“Which path leads to your village?” As she expected both pointed to the same path.
Laila continued on her way,
Passing scary creatures of the night and day.
Three days passed she was losing hope,
For nowhere in sight was the fountain of truth.
Finally after a whole week,
Laila stumbled upon a creek.
Be her dumb or be her wise,
The fountain took her by surprise.
She told it how she found her way,
It listened to all she had to say.
“Well my dear child, since you must know, you did not find yourself, yourself found you,
For every obstacle that you passed you believed in yourself and here you are your true self at last
Now my children I hope you see that believing in one's true self,
Makes you unique compared to anyone else."
