The Roommate
By Joseph Logsdon
Charles Bundy was the best roommate in the world. Charles, despite his tendency to get jealous, always supported his best friend. To many people, Charles was kind and loving, but, Charles also carried a secret, a secret that he would take to his grave. Unknown to the rest of the world, Charles Bundy loved to murder people. He was, as most psychologists suggest, an insane and deluded man. That fact, more than anything else, made Charles Bundy a force to be reckoned with.
One afternoon, Charles murdered his girlfriend in his apartment. Before he could get rid of the body, there was a knock at the door. Having no time to dispose of the body properly, Charles used the nearest closet as a hiding place. After placing the body in the closet, Charles opened the door.
“What is it?” Charles asked as he allowed his roommate to enter the apartment.
“Why are you always so nervous, Charles?”
“I have anxiety problems,” Charles answered.
“Yes, I know, but, for some reason, you seem extra nervous. What’s wrong?”
“If I tell you, will you stop being so nosy?”
“That depends, what do you have to tell me?”
“John, that isn’t fair,” Charles replied.
“Don’t get mad, I was joking,” John laughed.
“You aren’t very funny,” Charles stated.
“Yeah, and neither are you,” John laughed.
“What are you talking about?”
“Do you really think I don’t know what’s going on here?”
“John, I wouldn’t try to make me angry,” Charles huffed as he worried about being discovered.
“I’ve known this for a few weeks,” he laughed.
“What do you know?”
“I knew that you were going to end it with her eventually, I just didn’t think that it would be so soon,” John laughed.
“Amanda was a great girl, but sadly, all things come to an end, even good things,” Charles stated.
“So, got any plans for tonight?”
“Not really,” Charles answered.
“Well, I guess you won’t mind me bringing a couple of friends over.”
“Friends? What friends?”
“You know, Jack and Jeffrey,” John stated as he paced the room.
“I don’t think that is such a good idea,” Charles stuttered.
“Why not?”
“Look, this day has been very hard on me. If you don’t mind, I would like to be left alone, at least for tonight. It’s not that I don’t want to have fun, it’s just that I’m going through a very tough time. You understand what I’m saying, right?”
“Well, I guess I could meet with the guys somewhere else.”
“That would be great,” Charles stated.
“I’ll need my jacket,” John stated as he headed for the closet.
“Don’t open that door,” Charles commanded as he grabbed John’s shoulder.
“Why? Do you have a dead body in there?”
“Of course not,” Charles stuttered.
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing, it’s just that I want it to be a surprise.”
“Surprise? What surprise?”
“Um, I bought you a Christmas present,” Charles fibbed.
“You’re lying,” John accused.
“Why would I lie?”
“Because I know you,” he answered.
“If you open that door, I’ll have to kill you,” Charles threatened.
“Charles, if only you knew,” John laughed.
“What are you talking about?”
“Do you think that you’re the only one with a secret?”
“What do you mean?”
“If you show me your body, I’ll show you mine,” John laughed.
“John, I’m a straight man.”
“I don’t mean that!”
“What do you mean, then?”
“I’ll show you.”
Without further hesitation, John reached under his bed.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m showing you that you’ve entered a very difficult game.”
Without delay, John dragged the body of a dead man across the room.
“What’s going on?” Charles asked.
“You see, unlike the closet, no one looks under the bed,” John laughed.
“Are you saying, that all this time, you’ve been keeping this from me?”
“What about what you’ve been keeping from me?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I wasn’t born yesterday, Charles. I’ve known your secret for many years, I was just waiting for you to tell it to me,” John laughed.
“How many people have you killed?”
“Twelve, possibly thirteen. How many people have you killed?”
“Eight,” Charles answered.
“I’ve been doing this longer than you. Don’t worry, with any luck, you’ll break my record someday,” John laughed.
“Why haven’t we killed each other?” Charles asked.
“I never kill anyone that I’m close to. Obviously, you have different rules,” John laughed.
“What do you mean?”
“Amanda is in the closet, isn’t she?”
“Are you going to call the police?”
“If you get caught, it would only be a matter of time before I get caught. Instead of competing, we could help each other,” John exclaimed.
“How?”
“I’ll help you get rid of your evidence, and you, hopefully, will help me get rid of mine. You have to admit, that sounds like a pretty good deal,” John laughed.
“So, what are we going to do with our rotting friends?” Charles asked.
“We’ll burn them, of course,” John answered.
