The wish
The ocean was a jewel blue, the sea gulls were dancing above me and the waves were rippling smoothly, it was a perfect day, but no waves in sight. I grabbed my surf board and forced it into the golden sand crystals. I placed my towel onto the ground, smothered my body in sunscreen and sat there waiting patiently for some waves to come crashing down, so I could get out there and surf, but there was no hope. I just remained there letting the glimmering sun tan my olive skin.
I decided to go for a walk further down the beach. I looked up and saw a perfect sky, no clouds in sight. I looked behind me and saw small footprints printed in the sand where I had walked. I look left and right, just admiring the beautiful view.
As I was engrossed in my thoughts, I come across a big mountain of rocks. On the side of it was a big wooden path with rusted metal railing leading up behind the big boulders. ‘I wonder what’s behind them?’ I thought. I slowly crept up to the mysterious, broken pathway, thinking about all the possible things behind it. Houses? Waves? People? What could it be?
I swung my head around one of the big rocks to find a huge black hole, dented into the rocks. I cautiously step over to the mysterious circular gap in the boulder and look inside.
I poked my head into it and suddenly saw a slight shimmer come from the hole, it was bright and fascinating. I leaned in closer to take a better look and it felt as if something had pushed me. I screamed, my legs and arms were thrashing around and my mind was racing a million times an hour. What was happening?
BANG! I hit the ground hard. I looked around and saw things sparkling on the stone walls. The floor was wet and slippery from the waves splashing in and the cavern was dark. I pick myself up and a strong pain shot through my head, I was in agony. I move forward, holding my head and slowly putting one foot in front of the other. I was using such little light from the things glimmering on the walls, it was hard to see where I was going because the gem like things on the walls were flashing on and off. I was trying not to trip over anything in my path.
As I was walking I noticed that the flashing things on the walls were making a trail for me to follow. I stepped closer to the gems, reached my hand out and touched them. A slight spark burst out of a gem and zapped my finger.
“OW” I screamed, my voiced echoed through the caves. I grabbed my finger and squeezed it, the pain was awful. But I kept moving, I followed the gems, until I reached the end of the tunnel.
“Well that was disappointing” I said to myself. I scanned the walls to see if there was a way to get past it. I placed my hand onto the wall and felt every inch of it until I felt a key like hole in the bottom left corner. It was hidden pretty well.
“Damn it, I thought this cave would lead me somewhere” I whispered.
I sat down and felt my necklace that my mother gave me for my sixteenth birthday. The necklace was a silver chain with a key hanging off it. It had swirls and diamonds stuck to it. She said there was a big story behind this necklace but that was for my eighteenth birthday and tomorrow was that special day. I have waited years to find out the history of this key that has been lying around my neck.
When I first got it I never really thought much about it, but as time grew I began to think it was magical. I never took it off, it meant everything to me.
As I was settled on the floor rubbing my necklace, it lit up. The gems on the wall stopped flashing, my jaw dropped, my pupils dilated and a beam of light shone from the key hole on the wall.
I took off my necklace and went over to the wall. I placed my key into the key hole and spun it. The wall shook and grumbled, it flew open. Inside was a huge box, with a padlock connected to it, but unlike any other lock, there was no need for a key, instead there were four little holes in each corner and a heart with swirls dented into it.
'I don’t understand' I thought, what was going on. How am I supposed to unlock this chest if there isn’t a key to unlock it? I stood up and turned around and slowly started to walk out.
'Wait,' I thought. 'This key had something to do with opening the wall, so then it must have something to do with opening the chest.'
I examined my necklace, then examined the lock. 'Hmm', I thought, I went up to the lock and felt it. The swirls on the head of the key were the same pattern as the one on the lock. I placed the head of the key on to the lock.
“It fits!” I said excitingly, “now I just need the find out what the holes in the corners are supposed to be.”
I scanned the floor, the walls and back to my key. I looked at the diamonds stuck to the swirls. They were the same shape and size as the ones on the lock. Maybe that’s what it is. I bent my hand and stuck my nails out and slowly grabbed the diamonds, but they were stuck.
“WHAT?” I yelled, “then what are the holes for?” I took another quick look at the lock then back at my fingers. 'My fingers!' I thought, I took my hands and planted my fingers into each hole.
“OW!” I screamed, the chest zapped each one of my fingers which were fixated in the holes. I clenched my fists to help the pain, then I noticed that the chest was slowly opening. A huge beam of light shot out of the chest. I poke my head inside and find……
“WHAT!” I hear a different voice scream, I turn around and see an unfamiliar face.
“This is outrageous! I pushed you down a hole and followed you here just to find this! I have been trying to get into this place for years and this is what I find! This is all useless, I thought that I would find treasure that could make me a billionaire” he complained.
“So, you pushed my down a 10-meter hole, you watched me get zapped and used me to make you a billionaire. What kind of person does that?” I question him.
“Me” he said and continues with an evil laugh. “Well because there’s nothing here I’m just going to go.”
He ran out and pushed the wall closed, trapping me inside.
“WAIT” I yell.
I pounded on the wall and yelled for help but there was no answer, I put my back to the wall and fell to the ground, I curled up into a ball, placing my head into my lap and fell into a deep sleep.
I find myself in front of a chest, inside was my last name carved on the lid and an enclosed jar with blue air flying around. I pick it up and pop the top off, the air comes fluttering out. It makes shapes that look like people. I was confused and soon I realised they were my family heritage.
“You may only pick one to save, who will you free?" I heard someone whisper. I woke up with a big gasp. My body couldn’t control my excitement, I went over to the chest, ripped it open and saw nothing, just like I saw before, what did that dream mean?
I went searching, I pushed and pulled on the wooden planks, I looked on my key to see if there was anything else that could help me. But nothing, there was nothing at all. Nothing to explain the dream I had or the jar I saw with my family heritage inside. I just wanted to go home and ask my mum about the necklace, the cave, and everything that has happened to me today, I just wanted answers. But I couldn’t do any of that until I found a way out.
“HELP!!!, SOMEBODY HELP ME!” I screamed. All of a sudden, I felt the wall rumble from under my hands, it slid open and I saw a relieved face staring at me.
“Oh, honey are you ok?” mum said. I nod my head up and down, releasing a slight sigh. “Mum? How did you find me?” I question her.
“Well you know the key I gave you for your sixteenth birthday, I have the same key and they have the same use and power. When yours flashed at the key hole on the wall it flashed mine too and I knew straight away where you were. You weren’t supposed to know until tomorrow, but I guess it’s too late now.” She continued, “This is our family’s cave, it has been here for centuries and people have been trying to get in here for years now.” She explained, “But no one really knows what’s in the chest, they think it's treasure, ha-ha, but no. It’s a jar with our family’s heritage spirits in it.”
“So, the dream was right, but when I looked inside the chest there was nothing” I replied.
“Ah, see that’s where you don’t get it, the chest is just covering for what’s really behind it.”
“I don’t understand” I said in a curious way.
Mum smiled and turned towards the chest, she walked towards it, pulled it away from the wall and removed the painting which was stuck to the wall. She knelt on the ground turning her head a little bit making sure I was watching. She yanked her necklace off her neck and flicked a cap off the tip of the key. I creeped forward to clearly see what she was doing. She blew into the secret compartment in the key and pulled out a golden stick. She held it in front of her eyes admiring it before sticking it into a hole in the wall behind the chest. I heard clicks and taps coming from the wall until a small part of it swung open revealing a jar with blue air flying around. Mum picks it up and slowly passes it to me.
“Come on open it” she says excitingly. I pop the top off and release the blue air flying around.
“Only you can use it” mum explained, the air starts to form faces, my family heritages faces. I noticed my dad and my great grandma betty, they were everything to me.
“We have been hoping for you, Hayley. Only you can help us!” A voice whispered.
“Who are you?” I ask.
“We are your family heretics, we are here to grant you all the wishes you need. So, what do you wish for?” The voice whispers again.
“I-I’m not sure, this is all such a big surprise to me, I don’t know what to wish for. Um, w-what can I wish for” I stutter.
“Anything you like” the voice whispers down my neck.
“Honey, you can wish to bring back your dad from the dead if you like” Mum announced.
“Are you serious?” I happily respond, mum nods with a big smile on her face. “only you can do it, no one else.” She says.
“I-I wish to bring back my father” I said, relieving all the pain off my chest. It felt like a big weight had been lifted off my shoulder. I shut my eyes and open them again to see the blue air spinning around a million times an hour. All of a sudden I see my father reappearing from the dead.
“Father?” I ask.
He looks down at his feet, his arms and stomach, a big smile grows across his face and he lets out a big giggle. “I knew you could do it someday darling, I’m just happy it was before your eighteenth birthday” he responded.
We all came in for a big hug, but as my dad came in he tripped over the jar and smashed it. Pieces going everywhere, the spirits fluttering trying to escape.
“JOHN!!” mum yells. She runs over to the book shelf in the corner searching for something to trap the spirits in. “Ah-ha” she screams. Mum ran over and scooped up the blue air flying around and popped the top on, sealing it so nothing escapes. “I’m just going to put this is a safe spot” she laughs.
