The White Rose
Born 2005, F, from Tirana, Albania"Wake up, Kate, you've been sleeping forever!" Said her mother, opening the windows to let the sunshine brighten up the room. Then she waited impatiently for Kate to get out of bed.
"Just five more minutes, mom." Yelled Kate in her sleepy voice.
"No, you have to get up and eat your breakfast. I'm tired of you being lazy every morning." She removed the blankets from her and put them away. Kate slowly stood up, walked to the bathroom to wash her face and brush her teeth. Then she went to her closet to pick her clothes. She wore a pink silk dress that stopped above her knees with white flats. Next she sat in front of her mirror, picked her comb and started brushing her hair. She had wavy, brown hair with light, creamy skin, and big brown eyes, just like her mother.
Kate ran downstairs and joined her family. Her father was reading the daily newspaper while drinking hot coffee, while her mother was cutting the pancakes into pieces. Kate was sitting next to her older sister, Claire, who was intelligent and sweet. She had dirty blonde hair that she put in a bun; she also had ocean blue eyes. Kate was starving, so she started eating right away.
"Laura's birthday is next week, Kate. Did you pick her a gift?" Asked Claire.
"Laura's gift!" Kate yelled. She rushed to her room and opened her green jewelry box. She's been keeping a beautiful heart necklace for Laura so she will always remember her best friend. Suddenly, Kate's smile faded. She remembered that Laura will leave this town next month and live in Texas. She put the necklace back in her box and went outside; she always goes to the big field, it's her favorite place. Suddenly, something grabbed her attention in the distance. When she took a closer look, it was a white rose, not fully bloomed. "What are you doing here flower, in the middle of the field all alone?" She thought out loud. She smoothed her dress and sat next to the rose. She started talking, then laughing and singing. She had a wonderful time with the white rose. On the next day, she grabbed a water bottle and went to the field again. She watered the rose and decided to take good care of it. A week later, the rose was fully bloomed and looked healthy. On Laura's birthday, she wanted to show her the rose. She was so excited, but when arrived at the fields, it was dead. The stem was rotten and the petals were brown.
"I-I don't understand, I took good care of it." Said Kate. She looked like she was about to cry.
Laura put her hand on Kate's shoulder and smiled, "Nothing can stay forever, Kate. But look at the bright side, you can plant another one." She tried as hard as she can to cheer her up.
Kate hugged her tight and whispered, "Oh Laura, I'll miss you so much,"
Laura whispered back, "Don't worry, I'll be back few years later. And I'll never forget my best friend."
Kate's face lightened up, "Oh, I almost forgot," She pulled the heart necklace out of her pocket. "Happy birthday!"
"It's so beautiful!" She looked at the necklace and put it on her neck.
"This will remind you the amazing friendship that we had," Said Kate while looking at the necklace.
After Laura left the town, Kate planted the rose and took good care of it. Years later, she made her own garden, full of white roses. Every morning, she sits in the garden and smiles at the memories she had with Laura; waiting for her to come back…
