I could have done just about anything else, but I kicked Angel. She deserved it, I thought, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it was not going to end well for me…
Angel was about the bossiest, meanest, most braggiest person in the world. If you nudge her with your foot, she’s going to kick you hard until you have a swelling bruise. Then, threaten you, and then tattletell on you. Even though her name is Angel, she is only that way to the teachers. Geez, they think she’s the best student they ever had (they taught since they were 18, now they are 80). I wouldn’t be surprised if she went to school one day with an expensive fake golden halo on her head.
That’s why I shouldn’t have kicked her, she’s going to say I maimed her or something. And that’s why I ran away deep into the restricted woods just beyond our school. And I’m pretty sure they aren’t restricted for just any reason...
Some people say the woods are haunted, some say that evil spirits trap children inside. But, I know it’s just a myth, at least I hope so.
I ran for several minutes before I saw it. A blur of a Tuxedo cat glanced up at me, whimpered and hid, then I heard an eerie voice that echoed through the tree. Instantly, I wanted to go home. But, instead of fleeing, I yelled, “Who are you, show yourself! And don’t you dare even think about hurting the kitten!” I picked up the kitten, black with white paws, twitching tail and those clear blue eyes. I braced myself for the same creepy voice taunting me again, but the voice vanished and the cat had ran away. I looked up to see an old man with the same kitten with white paws following closely at his heels.
“Out!” The man said,
“O-Okay,” I whimpered, stepping back. His expression softened a bit.
“Sorry, but I ain't have you harm’in these animals, that’s what ” He replied.
I fired up. “I just tried to save it!” I snapped at him, and this is what you do!?” He put his arms up in defense.
“By the way the names Earl, You gotta point yeh know, and yeh definitely don’t look like you could cause any harm. Come.”
He ushered me through the woods and I saw it, the most beautiful place I have ever seen, an animal sanctuary. The summer breeze was blowing gently through the green grass and animals of all kinds hopped about.
“I didn’t want yeh to see, ‘cuz many people want to chop the place down to make a mall. The only way is to make them think it’s haunted. Now, I need your help because they ain’t care anymore, they’re goin’ to make the mall in two days.” Earl said.
It all made sense, I thought, that explains the shrill voice and the harsh tone. He was afraid that I would help cut down the trees.
“But, I’m sure that if everyone knew about this, they could make it even better.” I replied.
“Girl, I’m not take’n any chances.” He snapped.
“But-”
“No chances!” Earl yelled. I tried not to look hurt, but anger took on, again.
“Well, I think you should respect my opinions, goodbye, caveman!” I stormed off with enraged tears in my eyes, not because of Earl’s words, but because anger had took over, again. I tried to retrace my steps but, it was hard to bury the stubborn truth, I was lost. Just then, in the corner of my eye I spotted the tuxedo cat. It has to be the same one, I remembered the twitching tail, the clear blue eyes. It has to be. But, I didn’t need to think about it anymore, the cat was followed by an old man... Earl.
“Earl!!!” I screamed in delight, “I’m so sorry I yelled, and I’m sorry I called you caveman. Anyway, why did you come to find me?”
“I came cuz I knew yer heart was in the right place. Earl replied. “Now, let’s go save those animals!”
He led the way through the forest, and surprisingly we found ourselves at the town square.
“This is not the right place,” I said, turning around.
“No, this is.” Earl said firmly. And he walked right up to the middle of the square and said, “Ladies and gentlemen! I can assure you lads that the woods are not haunted,” Before he could finish a roar of voice overlapped each other.
“Then we can start cutting down the trees now!” someone said.
“We can build our mall!” Another person shouted.
Earl held up his hand and the people fell silent,
“Let me finish! You cannot build your mall!”
Voices argued with him, and amongst them were...my parents AND the mayor, I gulped.
Earl yelled, “SILENCE!” the voices faded once again.
“Have you lads ever thought ‘bout the animals in the forest, huh? Have yeh? What would happen to them?”
There were voices, this time in agreement, the mayor nodded and said, “It is decided, the mall won’t be built!” Cheering spread and I found my parents,
“We are proud of you for helping those animals,” Dad said, “but lady, you have some explaining to do” he glanced at Angel, glaring at me...

Help Us Understand What's Happening
JD
05/20/2018Katie, you kind of have two different stories going on here, but my guess is that your main character needed to find a way to redeem herself after kicking her classmate, and that is why she tried to help the animals in the woods and convince others to do the same. Thanks for all the great stories you've shared on Storystar! :-)
