Wild life and Profits of Doom.
Just a short note that came into my head whilst listening to spring time bird song.
I’ve lived up here in the wilds of the North York’s Moors for 50 yrs plus and every year almost to the day a Cuckoo starts shouting his iconic name as he looks for a suitable place to lay his selfish egg. I can hear him now and as I concentrate, yes, there is another one calling the same notes across the moor by about three miles.
I am not a ‘twitcher’ but love wildlife and find it difficult not to be astounded at this bird that year after year defeats the elements and distance and guns to migrate back and forth from deepest Africa to this same remote couple of trees on the vast moorscape. Not only that but to time its journey so precisely.

Recently we have had doom makers quoting figures on the decline of Lapwings, Curlews and of all things rabbits. I cannot see any such decline up here. There are rabbits all over the place to the extent they become a nuisance. I don’t doubt that there are areas, particularly closer to the urban sprawl, that may suffer, but not here.
I personally think that we should try to be much more positive with our view of wild life. Ospreys have made an increasing comeback. In the countryside there are deer of all types getting on with their life and unsung.
Migrating salmon and particularly sea trout are much more in evidence now than when I first arrived.
Moles have really done well. They live a solitary life underground and like to have their own patch.
Up here we call them ‘Mouldy Warps’ I have no idea why.
I know there are many areas where we should save the planet but let’s try and be sometimes a bit more positive and rejoice in what we have!
