Cosmic Connection
Born 1947, M, from Oceanside, United StatesCosmic Connection
There’s a cosmic connection between some people. Usually we say the two people involved are soulmates, that they were destined to be together. Of course, neither we nor they know it’s going to happen until it does. But on some rare occasions, the connection is felt by one, or both parties, though they may not know what they’re experiencing. All they know or sense is that there is someone or something out there waiting for them. Such was the case of Lilly and Nick.
Both were musicians. She played the cello in an orchestra, while he played the guitar and sang in his brother’s band. Neither knew of the other’s existence, and yet somehow when each played they could almost hear the other’s song.
Lilly was living in New York City at the time, while Nick was in Los Angeles playing a steady gig with his band in a newly renovated nightclub.
One day they both decided to write a song for themselves. They began by putting pen to paper. But what would have blown each of their minds had they found out was the fact that the notes for each song were exactly the same, which was the reason they could almost hear, in the back of their minds, an echo of the song being sung or played from afar.
At night, each would lay in bed listening to the other’s song, but neither told their fellow musicians. They knew their mental health would be called into question, so each kept the secret to themselves.
It wasn’t until they both began to tour that the other’s music began to filter more strongly into their consciousness’s. This was when a sense of desperation began to grow in both—it was a desperation to find out where the music was coming from.
Lilly began to search first. She and her orchestra were in Phoenix. Because she knew that the echo of her song was being played by someone with a guitar in a rock band, she began to check out several bars where rock bands were playing. At the same time, Nick began to hit places where orchestras could be found.
Finally, on the last night for both, they discovered each other in the park near Lilly’s hotel. She had heard an acoustic guitar playing her song in the park below her balcony. With great excitement, she took her cello down to the park and began to play along with the guitar.
“Oh, it’s you!” said Nick with breathless wonder when he saw and heard Lilly playing their song. “But how . . .?”
Stopping a moment, Lilly just shrugged. “We must be connected by the universe.” Then she once again began to play their song in tandem with his guitar. Their music became like a synchronized dance, each note flowing smoothly alongside its twin. They continued to play for almost an hour. Then they walked back to her hotel room and made sweet love, not speaking, not promising anything. Their music and each other was all they needed.
It wasn’t until the next morning that they talked about who they were and what they wanted out of life. Lilly wanted to become one of best cellists around. Nick just wanted to continue to play rock with his brother and their band. Just before they separated, each gave the other contact information, then they parted with a deeply felt kiss.
A month later, Lilly discovered she was pregnant. She didn’t tell Nick; she didn’t think she needed to even though both had talked a lot on the phone since that night.
Seven months later, Nick and Lilly ended up in the same city, and that’s when Nick found out about Lilly’s condition. He didn’t have to ask if it was his; he’d been having strange dreams. In his dreams, he’d seen Lilly holding and nursing a baby boy. Never once while on the phone did he ask her about it—he was too afraid. But now, they discussed about what to do. Nick wanted to quit his band and just stay with Lilly until the baby was born, but she wouldn’t let him. She decided he should continue to tour with his band, and then she would contact him once the baby arrived, which she did.
At that point, both quit their respective situations, taking up residence in a house that Lilly had inherited from her late mother. Together, they raised their son, whom they called August, for the month in which he was born. Lilly taught music to struggling adolescents, while Nick played in local bands. What they didn’t know at first, but discovered very quickly, was that they had produced a musical prodigy. August was writing music and playing the guitar by the time he was four. Eventually he joined several garage bands until he was old enough to play in clubs.
Both his parents were extremely proud of him. They became even more so when he joined a major rock band and began to tour. But then one night Lilly received a strange phone call from her son. He told her he could hear music at night while lying in bed. “It’s soothing and helps put me to sleep, but I don’t know where it’s coming from!”
Lilly smiled knowing exactly what was going on. That’s when she told him about how she and Nick had come to be a couple. It was something she had never told him before.
“So what do I do about it?” he asked her.
“Just lay there and enjoy it. It’s your soulmate calling to you. Let the music wash over you, and then one day, you and her will find each other without even trying.”
So that’s what August did. And eventually, he met Amber. She was a violinist in an orchestra. Together, they produced August Jr. And he too followed in his parent’s footsteps.
