She’s Just a Bitch!
By Herm Sherwood-Sitts
To everyone else, she’s just a bitch. Strutting through town, with her head held high, beautiful blond hair and pretty dark eyes.
I’m sure it eased mom’s worries, when she was with me, while I swam, fished, biked and hiked, as young boys do.
She was Mom’s birthday present and my best friend. However … Dad was her favorite human. She came when he called. Sat, stayed and obeyed at his commands. Her name was Beauty and it fit her well.
At one time she was the mother of nine, not counting me; though she watched over me, as if I was one of her own.
No salesman or solicitor dared to pass, for she was fierce, fearless and loyal beyond belief.
From a pup to the day she passed, she was my shadow and companion. She would see us kids to the bus each morning and be the first to greet us on our return.
That’s the reason, the German Shepherd, is no doubt… man’s best friend.

10/04/2018A great story, I wish I had a dog but I don’t have a big enough section. They are such good company.
In the past we had boxers, They are so loyal and lovable.
Thanks for sharing your story.

10/02/2018Dogs can become the best friends and heroes of our lives, and your very short story beautifully illustrates one such example. Thanks for sharing this lovely tribute to your childhood protector, Herm! Loved it! : )

10/02/2018The title alone would make most folks stop and take a gander. LOL We had dogs until one of them got Pyro and turned on Mom and trapped her in the kitchen. From then on it was cats. Lots and lots of cats. Kathy and I ended up raising almost every dog our Kids brought home. Holly, Domino, Sally, except for Birthday. He is like the dog in your story. My younger daughter is his Universe for the last ten years- and he likes all of us a bit- but make no bones about it, she is his Master.
When Sally passed, that was it for pets for Kathy and I. Unless you call the spider that lives off our back deck: Madame Charlotte. LOL
Smiles, Kevin

10/02/2018Hey Herm,
I meant to say "Parvo" not "Pyro". Dogs get Parvo Virus, ten year old boys get Pyro. LOL Smiles, Kevin
