A Black Shadow
Born 2007, F, from Portland, Oregon, United StatesBonnie bolted forward, sweat dripping down her face. Phew, it’s just a dream…she said to herself. But, even though she was wide awake, part of her still believed the dream was real. The dream was so vivid Bonnie still trembled with fear. Bonnie suddenly felt the feeling of someone watching her, she dove under the covers, scared to even look. Seconds passed, then minutes. Silly Bonnie, she thought, there’s no one there. She lifted the covers to see a black shadow looming over her. Bonnie screamed, and everything went black before she could see the shadow get sucked into her chromebook.
Bonnie woke to the sound of her mother yelling for her to come downstairs for breakfast. “Where am I?” Bonnie asked herself, only to look around and see her familiar room, with yellow walls and green polka-dots. She got dressed, brushed her teeth and headed downstairs. She munched her cornflakes in silence and got ready for school.
She slipped into her classroom just before the bell rang and took out her chromebook to work on her lab report. Her screen suddenly froze and went black. Bonnie frowned, Is it out of battery again? She searched her backpack to find a charging cord, and when she looked up, she saw four bolded, white words. You are being watched. Bonnie jumped back in surprise, it scared her to see it. She rose her hand, high up in the air and waved it around.
“Mr. Scherzenberg?”
“Yes?” A gruff voice replied. “This better be important!”
“Um...yes, sir.” Bonnie replied, pointing to her computer screen. The old, grumpy teacher leaned in and looked at it.
“Nothing’s wrong, you better not be playing around with me!” Mr. Scherzenberg scolded.
“No sir, but-”
“No buts!” Mr. Scherzenberg yelled, “If you bother me again you will get detention!” Then, Mr. Scherzenberg gave Bonnie a mean smile, revealing all the crooked yellow teeth he had. “And do you want that Bonnie?”
“No.” Bonnie replied curtly.
“THEN GET BACK TO WORK!” Mr. Scherzenberg bellowed in Bonnie’s face. Then he turned on his heel and tramped back to his desk.
Bonnie wasn’t frightened anymore, she was frustrated. And angry. Her stubborn chromebook screen refused to do anything besides display those ugly, fat words.
“Please, Mr. Scherzenberg! You’ve got to believe me.” Bonnie pleaded.
“That’s enough! You have lunch detention after school!” The mean man screamed.
For the rest of class, Bonnie just sat there, unable to do anything.
“Okay class!” Mr. Scherzenberg boomed, “Let’s see what you have done! I gave you an hour to work on your presentations, so you should be completed! If not...you will regret it. Bonnie come on up!” He gave Bonnie his mean smile again, the one that sent shivers up her spine. “Well?” he asked, “We are all waiting!”
Bonnie was enraged, “I’m not done! That’s all I have to say!”
“Oh, really? What did I tell you? You are going to regret it!”
“No, I’m not you lazy old hag!” Bonnie snapped.
“You, young lady, have gone way too far!” Mr. Scherzenberg yelled. He snapped his fingers, and Bonnie’s chromebook started to quiver, then rise, taking Bonnie with it. Soon, Bonnie floated up and out of the school.
“Wait!” She yelled at Mr. Scherzenberg, “I’m sorry!” she sobbed.
Mr. Scherzenberg just smiled that evil smile of his and continued watching Bonnie float up and away into the clouds...
