Thin Ice
Born 1955, M, from Norwich NY, United StatesBy Herm Sherwood-Sitts
This time of year, when it’s bitter cold; I think about how Dana, Amos, Larry, Mike, John and I, would go down and shovel the snow off of the ice on the river. We had a spot just upstream from Head’s, where the river would freeze over, from bank to bank. The other guys were pretty good skaters; me, not so much. They would let me play goalie with my boots on. Armed with a snow shovel, I would stand my ground. What a battle it was. Boston Bruin’s they weren’t, but a force to be reckoned with they were. Snow down yer’ neck, up yer’ sleeves, frozen knees along with bumps and bruises, just like the pros. (A few fist fights too!)
This went on for a while, and then one day, Larry fell through the ice. His pants froze so fast that by the time we got home, he could only take baby steps. After our parents found out, we weren’t allowed to play hockey on the river anymore.
So my friends, that is why Poolville, doesn’t have a hockey team.

11/12/2018Herm, so many similarities in our lives. My brother Mike and I were coming home from Collecting on his Paper-Route. There was a pool that was frozen over - so we climbed the fence to go look. Mike went out on it. I told him it wasn't safe ( Winter in Ohio, but not late winter). He laughed at his "chicken little brother." So he started jumping up and down. Kerplunk!
I climbed out onto the diving board and could see him clear as day through the ice.
He kept pounding on the ice from below, but it wouldn't break. Luckily, I was wearing the Coin Changer, loaded with quarters nickels and dimes. I smashed through the ice with it (and the fear of watching my brother drown in front of my eyes gave me strength way beyond my ten year old body).
He reached up thru the hole, used my arm as a lever, and I swear he pulled himself straight up out of the water like Marlin. Then he ran home in a dead sprint, and cleared the four foot high chain link fence around the pool like an Olympic Sprinter.
When I got home he was sitting naked on the dryer with these words for me: "Don't tell Mom!"
To this day, he claims I saved his life. I tell him that I just didn't want to have to do the Collecting the next week.
Smiles, Kevin

11/13/2018Well Jd, your wish has been granted. I put up a story today that is about my life. It is called: "Everything Changed." I am not comfortable with "True Stories" - but you deserve to have some of your wished granted. You work so hard for all of us, that I relented a little, and gave a sketch of my life that I think people draw from.
Hugs, Kevin

11/13/2018Another amazing true story from your real life, Kevin! Wow! You have so many REAL LIFE stories to tell, in addition to the fictional ones. I don't think a story has to be 100% true to be categorized as 'true life'. Everyone remembers things differently, and it is human nature to fill in the blanks of memory or to enhance the memories with fictionalized material. I think that as long as a story can be said to be 'based on a true story', that is enough to categorize it as such. I'd love for you to tell more of your real life stories as REAL stories on Storystar (not just quickies on the message board!) :-)
