The Report
By Ayush Kumar
His feet were trembling, he was feeling a chill down his spine, and he had Goosebumps. Adaliz Achilles a journalist was somehow keeping himself from collapsing.
*********
Adaliz was in Juba reporting about how a society of drug dealing mafias were designing dangerous drugs, that is leading to death of patients, especially those suffering from pulmonary diseases. It was then when he got the news about his wife being found dead at their residence.
The initial investigations said the death was due to an asthma attack.
*********
“The final report shows a clear case of asthma Mr. Achilles,” said the doctor. Adaliz didn’t react. He got up, picked up his coat and turned around to leave.
“An excess dose of short acting beta agonists…” the doctor cut short.
Adaliz turned.
“May God bless her soul,” the doctor changed the topic as he lend his hand forward for a shake.
“Doctor Jakob Brahms…” said the doctor.
“You were saying something about an excess dose,” Adaliz ignored the hand.
“Uh…yeah an excess dose of short acting beta agonists, a normal dose is quite common with the asthma patients, but an excess dose is a curse that was the reason of her death,” said the doctor sadly.
Adaliz Achilles was feeling guilty.
I should have been more careful.
“Excuse me I’ll have to go,” said the doctor and left, leaving behind a hurt Adaliz.
*************
Adaliz drove back to Hanover, where he resided. The same place where, his wife, Ada was found dead.
The door opened with a creak.
Adaliz walked with heavy steps. He fell down lazily on the sofa. The room was dimly lit. His pictures on the wall with Ada were a walk down the memory lane.
It was Saarland University hospital, where they first met. Ada was a practicing doctor then. It was love and only love that got them together. She was twenty nine and no less beautiful than a nymph.
It all seemed irrelevant that she was no more.
“She was a doctor how come she made this big a mistake?” murmured Adaliz.
Tears rolled down his cheek.
“How come…”
He was feeling extreme guilt, cheated and broken.
He turned around in agony.
There was something lying on the bed. It was a file.
What’s that?
He raised his hand and switched on the light.
SAARLAND UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, read the file.
He opened the file. There was a report of a person called Nef Bach. Nef, died six months ago.
Adaliz was going through the report when a line shocked him. The cause of the death of Nef Bach was an excess dose of short acting beta agonists. Adaliz began flipping the pages. The proceeding pages contained newspaper cutouts. All the cutouts were about some group called ‘The Inveigh’, who were involved in designing a drug called ‘BETA Xx’, which was developed by increasing the power of short acting beta agonists and purposely harmed people suffering from pulmonary diseases.
The reason for the death of Nef Bach was an excess dose of short acting beta agonists, thought Adaliz, which is also the reason for the death of Ada. Now, a group called The Inveigh develops a drug, BETA Xx, which is prepared by increasing the dose of…
Adaliz was dumbstruck.
Ada didn’t die.
She was murdered.
Adaliz rushed towards the cupboard and got out the postmortem report of Ada. As he examined the report, his heart sank. The reason for the death mentioned was ‘Asthma Attack’
He clenched his fist as he banged it against the cupboard.
They lied. The doctor knew the real cause, yet it is not mentioned in the report.
He turned the pages and then his eyes caught the message.
On a sticky note stuck at the back, it was written in bold.
Come to Freihausen Village.
-Jakob Brahms
I will get to the bottom of this!
*********
Freihausen village was a beautiful. It was seven in the morning. There were few people on the road. Adaliz walked slowly, he was lost in thoughts.
Smash!
The blow was hard. Adaliz was on the ground, he turned around to find a giant of a man.
The only thing Adaliz saw before he took another fist and collapsed was the word Inveigh on the giant’s shirt.
************
Adaliz opened his eyes and the first person he saw was Doctor Jakob Brahms.
“Doctor…” said Adaliz.
Adaliz was interrupted.
“So Mr. Achilles you got the report of my very near and dear patient Nef Bach, a very good friend, but he had to die.”
Adaliz was breathing hard.
“Okay so let’s come to the point,” continued Brahms, “your wife, I mean Mrs. Ada Achilles was a brilliant doctor, and so was I but we were not getting enough…you know we both wanted to hunt a bounty…”
Adaliz listened in disbelief as the doctor went on.
“So we invested our money to make this group stand…yes this group The Inveigh.”
Brahms face broke into an evil smile as he revealed further.
“Now, under this name we invented drugs of high doses so that we could get people killed…you know what I mean? Kill ….dead… in fact we wanted to invent a new disease. Which could be cured only by us, but your wife oh…”
Brahms paused and looked Adaliz in his eyes and said in a shrill voice.
“She betrayed us.”
“She wanted to expose us in front of the entire world with the help of her Journalist husband, so you know Mr. Achilles we had to kill her and so we’ll do with you,” smiled Dr. Brahms.
Adaliz tried to remain as calm as he could. He looked around there were a bunch of files.
These must be containing all their secrets. Thought Adaliz .
Adaliz saw that the giant was yet there.
“Get ready Mr. Achilles, you are about to witness the most precious discovery of my life presenting…”
The doctor looked at Adaliz with a sly smile.
“BETA Xx.”
It was a greenish-blue liquid dancing within the tube of the syringe.
Adaliz looked in horror.
I am tied. There’s a giant. There’s a mad doctor. This is called the endgame. thought Adaliz.
The doctor roamed around for a moment with a grin then held Adaliz by his collar and syringe in the other hand.
Time for some action. Thought Adaliz.
Adaliz rolled down with the tied chair and the needle stuck deep in the chest of the giant standing nearby. Adaliz looked at the giant in awe. As he suffocated, vomited blood and died not before crying the ‘most horrifying cry’.
The doctor turned and yelled, “You…you…you…bast…ard!!!”. Adaliz tried to loosen the rope but in vain.
“Let’s do it the old way pal!” said the doctor as he pulled out a knife.
The handle of the knife bore, 'The Inveigh' in German.
The doctor plunged the knife in Adaliz’s shoulder, Adaliz cried in agony and pushed the doctor with the other shoulder, the doctor unbalanced fell on the ground.
“You,” the doctor shouted, but before the doctor could complete, Adaliz pushed the ‘BETA Xx’ in the test tube which rolled to the edge of the table and the drug started flowing in the doctor’s mouth. The doctor hurriedly got up and held the knife.
“Tooo…much!” doctor cried. Adaliz squeezed his eyes, when the doctor collapsed, chocked and died.
The drug served its purpose.
Adaliz took a breath of relief he took the knife.
Now Adaliz managed to cut the rope using his free forearm.
Adaliz was precipitating. He rushed towards the table, and began examining the files. Maximum number of files bore “The Inveigh” on their cover, and a few files bore ‘Saarland University’.
Nef Bach’s file must be one of these that Ada left for me.
Adaliz went on with his search, it was then when his eyes caught a file bearing the word ‘PRIVATE’ on it. The file contained the name of Inveigh members. Adaliz went through the file.
It revealed that Ada was the deputy president of the group.
Oh Ada why you did this…
************
Two weeks later, the world knew about ‘The Inveigh’. The group no more remained secret as Adaliz made all the files public.
The doctors who were a part of the group committed Suicide as a part of the membership oath required them to do so.
Adaliz Achilles resigned his job.
With a pledge to expose any other such group that was involved in medical crime.
