“Curl hurry up your going to miss the bus”. Curls mum was shouting from downstairs. Curl procrastinated as he stumbled out of bed and chucked on some school clothes and went downstairs to get some breakfast. Curl was greeted downstairs by the scent of freshly cooked scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. Curl was confused to the fact that he was having this on a Friday when he always has this on a Sunday. But his mum reminded him that he had his U14 state Titles for surfing on Sunday. Curl had completely forgotten all about it. A sudden urge of excitement and nervousness at the same time rolled around in his stomach as he quickly scoffed down his breakfast and went upstairs again to get ready for school.
Curl was in year 7, with blonde wavy hair with sparkling blue eyes. He has a sister named Jess just over the age of 6 who has brown hair with golden blonde tints at the end. Curl had a good relationship with his sister, although she was quiet the dibber dobber he still got along with her most the time. He also has a lovely caring mum who loved her two kids more then anything and would do anything too save them. For their dad though, he passed away a few years ago when Curl was at the age of 6, to a shark attack when surfing. Curls dad was a great surfer, one of the best in the country, and this sort of inspired Curl too surf, not too get eaten by sharks but too face one of his biggest fears, sharks.
Curl rushes back downstairs to catch the bus as it arrives at the bus stop only one block from Curls house. As Curl hops on the bus he is greeted by his two best friends Reef and James. Reef and James were both surfers along with Curl. They weren’t just any ordinary surfers either they were state surfers. Curl was the 2nd best in his state and his mates 3rd and 4th. The best surfer in the state was on the bus as well. His name was Kevin. Kevin was also known as the school bully. He had Dark green eyes, silky strapped back blonde hair and was a big kid not so much a fat one but real muscular for his age. As he’s walking back with his friends, he walks past Kevin. Quickly before Curl can notice Kevin sticks his foot out right as curl walks past him and like the speed of light Kevin sticks out his leg too trip him over. Curls falling quickly, but to him feels like slow motion and before he can think about it, he’s hit the bottom of the filthy bus floor.
Curls doctor comes in with the scans. He looks as worried as Curls mother sitting in a big comfy red chair. She came in a hurry when she found out about the incident. Scans showed that he had broken his wrist and needed to keep on a cast for at least a month. Curl realised that this would mean that he wouldn’t be able to compete in the Surfing competition in two days on Sunday. Curls heart shattered when he found out about it. He had been waiting to compete in it and beat Kevin in it. He was also mad at Kevin for making him break his wrist. If he won, it wouldn’t only mean he’s the best U14 surfer in his state but also have revenge on Kevin.
Curl was let out of hospital at midday. He went home with his mum and sister who was on the bus with him at the time and saw the incident happed.
‘Kevin tripped over Curl that’s how it happened’ blurted out Jess.
‘Yeh but he won’t confess up too that, according too him I just slipped over’ replied Curl
‘Well he’s lying then’ Jess cried out
‘So, what there’s nothing I can do and now I can’t compete in the surf comp in two Days’
replied Curl through sparkling teared eyes and gritted teeth. Curl was furious about the situation he was in. He just wanted to punch Kevin in his big ugly face and beat him in the surfing competition but now that will never happen.
That night he just prayed that he would be able to compete in the surf comp, he would do anything to compete in that surf comp, ANYTHING. But he realised that that was never going to happen and just needed too rest, Curl was tired and slowly drifted off to sleep.
The next morning Curl woke up and his wrist was feeling fine. Curl was confused why he didn’t feel any pain when he moved like he did when he was moving it yesterday. He told his mother this and she said that we should head off to the doctors immediately and get another scan on it. When they got to the doctors, they were greeted by the doctor they had last time, Dr Steve. Dr Steve walked Curl and his mum to his room where he examined his wrist. He said had never see anything like this. It usually takes at least a month to heal. Dr Steve quickly rushed him over to the operation room to give his wrist a quick scan. The scan showed that he didn’t have a broken wrist like he had yesterday, and he didn’t even have a microscopic crack in this one. Everyone in the room was in shock, especially the doctor who had never seen anything like this in his entire life. This was a miracle he shouted with laughter and happiness. Curl got the cast taken off and was sent back home with him mum. He straight away went to the water and started practising for the surf comp.
After his solid session in the water he felt better than ever. ‘I can’t wait until Kevin sees me tomorrow, I’ll show him who’s the best’ mumbled curl to himself. Curl went home with his short fiberglass surf board under his arm. It was lucky that he didn’t live too far away from the beach because he didn’t know what he would do without the beach, and the sound of the waves crashing, it was real music too his ears.
The morning of the surf comp Curl was excited while also being nervous. He could feel the butterflies, swarming around his stomach and felt like his stomach was going to explode there was so many. But through all the nerves he worked up enough energy to go to the beach and compete. Curl got their and it was a beautiful day, the sun was beaming though the clouds and the heat was so strong that he now couldn’t wait to get in the water. They went in single stages where the first one they all go out together they pick out the best four people from the first stage and the second and final stage they go singularly, and the three judges give they a score out of ten. Right before they went into the water Kevin spotted Curl, and they made eye contact and Kevin approached Curl in confusion and a worried look on his face, as he slowly approached curl. ‘What?! I thought I broke your wrist?!’ he shouted.
‘you what?’ said the official standing behind curl
‘Um I meant you… wait not you sir him, Curl, him I thought he broke his wrist I meant’ Kevin mumbled.
‘Yes, that’s what I thought’ said the official suspicially.
Kevin stumbled away, looking back in disbelief. Curl thanks the official and the official wishes him good luck.
Before curl knows the horn blows and he is running into the freezing cold blue sparkling water. Water splashes up all the contestant’s legs, flicking water everywhere. A cold gush of water trickles down curls spine as he bellies slides like a penguin on to his board. Curl, James, Reef and Kevin hit the lead of the pack, paddling like their lives depend on it. Kevin was first too catching a wave and was one of his best waves. Curl knew he had too beat it. He saw a massive, at least 10-foot wave. He knew if he was able to ride this wave good, he would for sure get into the final stage. The wave approached quickly, and Curl started paddling for it. He caught the wave and the crowd goes wild when they see him riding it. Curl looks up and sees the crowd roaring with excitement and then back down as he notices that his feet are out of position as he tries too repositioning them, he gets a drop of water in his eye and rubs it too try get it out. Whilst doing this he falls back off his board right as the wave is about too break and tumbles down underneath the wave and has hit the bottom. By this time Curl was almost out of breath, he struggles up to the top trying too make it by doesn’t manage too and starts sinking back down slowly before hitting the bottom of the ocean.
Curl wakes up and is lying on his back on the warm sand on the beach. He’s confused as he sees Kevin leaning over him. Followed up by a roar of clapping and excitement. As it seems to Curl as Kevin has saved Curls life. Kevin explained to Curl how he got dumped by a massive wave and almost drowned and Kevin had given him CPR and saved his like. Curl didn’t understand why Kevin would do something like this for Curl. But then realised that this meant that he wouldn’t make it too the second stage and won’t be the best U14 surfer in his state. The Judges speak on the loud speaker and say who’s going to be going through to the second stage.
‘First place is going to Kevin Humphry. Second place is too Reef Thomas. Third place goes too James Thomas.’
There is a silent break as the Judges announce who comes fourth. Curl gets that same butterfly’s in his stomach as he had before the race started. But then realises that his chances are very low as he only caught a couple of waves and they weren’t really the best he could do but maybe just maybe he would be able to make it. But then the judges got back on the micro phone and announced who came fourth.
‘And last but not least, in fourth place Curl Cunnings!’
Curl couldn’t believe it. Everyone including the judges applauded the contestants but then got straight into the final round.
They went in order of the position they came. Kevin first, Reef second, James third, and Curl last. Kevin’s shot started, the 5-minute timer started, and Kevin sprinted out into the water, as everyone in the crowd watches as he catches a nice wave and scores an amazing 9 out of 10. Almost a perfect score. Both James and reef go and score a 7 and an 8. It comes up to Curls turn and before he knows it the timer starts, and he now has 10 minutes to get a perfect score to be the best surfer for his age in his state. His strong twig arms push through the strong current of the blue ocean. He waits for a wave, but the ocean is dead and there is nothing too catch. He waits and waits and there is only a minute left and he hasn’t caught a wave yet. He waits and waits and is about too come in when he sees a massive wave coming over the in the distance. The only problem was he going to have enough time. He paddles out to the wave like his life depends on it and uses all his energy. He turns around on his board and paddles too catch the wave. Before he knows it he’s riding the wave when he notices something swimming in front of him. A shark. He sees that its swimming straight at him. He notices that it is massive and at least 7 foot great white shark, the same that killed his dad, was approaching him quickly so he carves as hard as he can and dodges the shark but the shark doesn’t give up that easily and keeps going after him. Everyone in the crowd is panicking as lifeguards come out on jet skis. The shark is creeping up behind Curl but is cut off as the wave turns into a barrel and he sees the shark on the other side of the wave but not able too get too him. While curl is riding the barrel the their is a strike of fear that hits the whole crowd as they cant see him or the shark. Whilst in the barrel of the wave curl feels relaxed and keeps going until he reaches the end of the wave where the crowd jumps up and down with excitement. The time is up and curl paddles into shore where he is greeted by his mum and his sister and his two best friends. But the real thing curl was waiting was for the judges scores. There was a long pause of silence between the judges announcing the scores, finally the judges spoke on the microphone. Yet again there is silence, until the judges announce that Curl has scored a perfect score of 10! The crowd bursts into excitement and everyone is jumping up and down, curl is completely stunned and doesn’t know what to do. He stands their not really understanding that this now means that he is the best U14 surfer in his state.
