Christmas Dinner
By Herm Sherwood-Sitts
While waiting for the bus on Christmas Eve, she could remember when her son was young. She and Tommy would lie on their backs and make angels in the snow. She didn’t know exactly when he started down the destructive path that he is on now. He drinks too much, smokes and the women he chooses, she didn’t approve of.
The snow was falling and the winter breeze left a sting on her cheeks and nose. She watched as a well dressed gentleman, brushed the snow from the bench next to her with his news paper.
“Any big plans for Christmas,” he asked in a cheerful voice?
“No,” was her half hearted reply. “The same ole tradition,” she moaned.
“And what would that be,” asked the gentleman.
“Well… for the last eight years I have made the traditional Christmas dinner with all the fixings; hoping my son would show up. Each year it gets harder,” she said with despair.
The 109 pulled up to the stop with its brakes squealing and gust of snow. “That’s my ride,” he smiled. “I hope your wish comes true this year,” and he was off.
She noticed he had left his newspaper. Thinking she would read it later, she stuffed it into her bag and boarded the next bus.
Christmas day, she made the perfect ham with all of the fixings and was waiting for the ole clock to chime twelve. She had a few minutes and decided to read the paper. On the front page read… NY City Detective Saves Six. There as big as life, was a picture of her son Tommy. While reading the article the doorbell rang. When she answered the door a young police officer was standing there with a dozen, beautiful Christmas roses.
“Merry Christmas Mrs. Stone. These are from Detective Stone; he is in the hospital recovering from smoke inhalation. He is going to be ok and he is sorry he won’t be able to join you for dinner. ”
Mrs. Stone then invited the young officer in for dinner and they had a wonderful chat. Afterwards she showed him pictures of Tommy’s childhood, in hopes that this young man would see what his own mother is missing on Christmas day.
After the young officer left, she sat there in awe. Tommy didn’t make it home for dinner, but the whole city seeing him as a hero, is a pretty darn good Christmas present for any mom.
