Lockdown!
Born 2006, M, from PORTLAND, United StatesLockdown!
“The school is now in a lockdown!” The announcement came over the intercom. “The school is now in a lockdown!”
“Get hidden!!” My teacher shouted as my classmates and I scurried to the side of the classroom without window access. The lights went off as my teacher shut the blinds. For a few minutes I thought it was only a drill, because the teacher didn’t know what was going on.
After an hour, we grew hungry. I attempted to go to sleep on my jacket. I played various finger games with my classmates such as Chopsticks, Mexican War and others. The teacher asked for jackets to make a restroom. After a few minutes, she called students to use the ‘restroom’. When she called me to go, I didn’t know where the restroom was, so I turned the doorknob from a door leading to the hallway. Light came from the hallway, blinding me.
“Austin!!” My teacher hissed. “What are you doing?!!”
“I don’t know where the restroom is,” I responded.
“It’s over there!” She pointed to a bucket in a corner surrounded by chairs with coats, one being mine. I did my thing and returned to my hiding spot.
I played a few tricks on my classmates, then I got a part of a Nutri-Grain bar from my classmate.
After waiting a while, the door rustled. Then two police officers burst through the door, and the familiar light came through the door. We were thankful and relieved that these officers came to save us. They quickly scanned us checking our pockets, looking in our coats, and lifting up our hoodies and sweaters. Then they sent us outside to form a line. There were seventh graders on the other side of the room from us, one of them was recording a video of me even though I didn’t know, and later posted me onto Youtube ( the video was deleted). The police said that they were going to be sending us to the gym. We walked out of the hallway, to another hallway, and into the gym.
We sat down next to the seventh graders which were the only seventh graders in the gym. We sat down and chatted, while the police brought other sixth graders into the gym. After that, the police brought in eighth graders.
After a while of watching students come in through the hallway, we felt hungry. At this moment, our vice-principal came with a cart of hot lunch food for us to eat. My classmates and I put our hands wanting mac-and-cheese with garlic bread to the side. The vice-principal passed food to the kids sitting against the wall. I saw my classmates receive the plates and forks, then I got the plate. I ate the food slowly, then milk came. I ate the mac-and-cheese and drank my milk, as I chatted with my classmates. Then, dried fruit and applesauce were being distributed to us, I started eating a pack of dried fruit when applesauce was being distributed. I watched kids go in line to the bathroom and get food. I wanna go home, I thought to myself.
Finally, the school started announcing names, one by one, names were being selected. I thought to myself that I was going to be called soon. My name is going to be said sometime, I thought. The kids who got called had to go up to the announcer, where there were people in construction vests taking students to their parents. Some names had to be repeated, because some students weren’t going up to the announcer.
After hearing names get called, the staff decided to keep us occupied by handing out water. The staff also typed names onto a google doc, so that it sped up the process of kids going up. I moved closer to the screen since it was on the other side of the gym. As kids started to leave, students filled in the gaps leaving more space to go closer to the screen of names called. I moved closer to my friends, as I chatted with them.
“Austin Yu!!” I heard the announcer shout.
“Oh yes!!” I shouted and stood up, “ok bye guys.” I said to my friends. I walked over to the announcer who brought over a helper in a construction vest. The helper brought me out of the gym and to my mom. I gave her a hug and we walked out of the door of the school.

01/03/2019I agree with Kevin that it is sad our schools and all the kids who attend, must live in fear of bad things happening, and that they should ever need to go into 'lockdown'. But it is better safe than sorry, so it is good for you all to be prepared and to know what to do, in case there is real danger. It was an interesting real life story to read, Austin. Thanks a lot for sharing it with us! : )

01/01/2019Austin,
Way to go for staying calm. When I was young, we had to hide under our desks, because we thought there was going to be a Nuclear War. I don't know if that is as scary as going into lockdown. Staying away from windows, and lines of fire, I feel sad that we still have to teach fear invoking things in schools.
Your story is scary both in how Social Media impacts even a scary moment, and how many systems are in place to find out who is okay...or not.
Good job, glad you are safe. And keep Hugging your Mom.
Happy New Year, Kevin
