“That, Star One, is up to you. Do you really want to wake them…ever?”
Star One stretched a tentacle of hot plasma out more than a thousand kilometers. It was a sign of both how deep his thoughts were running and how concerned he was about how to answer.
“Yes, I do want to wake them Corban. Just not right away. Not until we figure out how to get them to recognize their worth.”
Corban glittered for a second, as quarks popped in and out of existence; that was as sure a sign of Corban’s own deep thoughs and concerns as any being could want. Star One did not miss the signs.
“Corban, it isn’t your fault that all the things we tried over the last seventy nine Verts did not work. We couldn’t give them a much longer life span than the original 115 we planned for them. It was supposed to be a marker, remember?”
Corban glowed again, this time in the Radio Range of frequencies.
“Yes. I remember. We wanted them to have short lives, not more than thirty or so of their years, so that we could watch as they learned to expand that lifespan upward. We had no idea it would take a million of their years (thirty two Verts)to even get to a thirty year lifespan.
But they have made remarkable progress in the last Vert. They pruned out those other three branches of themselves: Cro-Magnon, Denisovans, Neanderthal, and that one sprout of Flores. It looked to us as if they were ready to shed the Homo Sapiens branch to flower into Homo Unum…One Human. “
Star One breached a bunch of particles…streaming them out in an amount of energy that could have, if directed at Earth, wiped the surface clean of any life form at all. It was, in fact, suggested by many that Star One do exactly that. But Star One wasn’t quite ready to give up on these unique colonies of mobile cells. Cells that in some cases weren’t even related to one another, or even aware of one another. Yet, somehow, they had arranged themselves in a manner that allowed them to move around, gain consciousness, and form personalities. Hive colonies that worked as a single unit. It was unique among life forms.
It was Corban who coined the Human term, now used by all the known species of intelligent beings in this Universe- bodies. Individual bodies, but not one body made of just an individual cell. It boggles the mind. Yet, there they are. Humans.
Asleep now. All of them. Every single one of the seven billion, six hundred forty three million, two hundred seven thousand, and nine of them. If Star One hadn’t ordered Corban to put them to “sleep”, which was actually more like a permanent stasis - a harmony where all their multiple systems stay balanced with no need to breathe, eat, move, or think. Kind of an eternal pause between breaths. No thinking either. Just frozen in a moment of time, where time outside passes, but inside remains just NOW and nothing else.
Star One spoke again:
“ They were so close to breaking through their petty chiefdoms and individuality to realize the Humanity they all share. ( A flare shot out in frustration. Matched by dozens of other flares from the team that had been working on Humans for over 70 Verts) We can’t give up on them now, just because they slid backwards over so short of time. “
Corban let out a flare that made purple so dark it was more Indigo than any purple one could recognize. For he was the one who noticed that in just three of the Humans “years” almost four thousand years of progress had been undone. No other species they had encountered had ever regressed that much in that short of time. Corban flared again.
“Yes. I know Star one. But if we hadn’t put them to sleep, they would have had their third, and final, World War.”
At that, everyone brought their fields in close. Tight balls of energy coalesced into spheres to contain the horrible thought of intelligent beings deciding to kill everyone instead of changing. A thought, and a threat, that no other species could have, or make.
“I know. I know. That is why we did what we did. Now, I think it is best that we just leave the Earth like it is. With all of them asleep, the air, water, land, and ecosystems should all cleanse themselves. When they wake up, their world will be fresh and clean again. Maybe that will stun them into keeping it that way…and they will finally blossom.”
Energy flared from all the beings. All of them. Yes, a fresh start for the planet, and another chance for the Humans. It was a good plan. With a good name:
