“Yes. We have followed those signals to their source.”
“Impossible. Nothing could live that close to the sun. Life can’t evolve in that kind of heat, surrounded by water!”
“True. But that is where the signals are coming from.”
Edge moved outside to watch the diamond rain that happened almost daily. Sharp followed him out. The diamonds bouncing off of their prism like bodies like little tap tap taps of colored lights as the piezoelectric effect took place with each tap. It is why so many of the Prism Folks like standing in the diamond rain.
Each little light display came with a small jolt of pleasure to. A warm fuzzy glow would flow through the Prism’s bodies. The Diamond rain would soon sink into the frozen Methane substrate down into the Ammonia Lake below. The Islands of Frozen Ice, and the Caves that were the ancestral home of the Prism’s before they became mobile, ambulatory, and intelligent- were covered now with small cities. Cities of towering prisms, built by the growth of crystals that had not achieved consciousness.
Distant relatives to Edge and Sharp- prisms that could think, as Ammonia flowed through their inner channels, and not water. Their brains made up of trapped frequencies bouncing off multi-faceted diamond hard surfaces making nodes, connections and bringing forth thoughts.
Sharp, and Edge were the two leading Scientists of this Millenia. (Crystals live almost indefinitely, but don’t become conscious entities for eons) They were the ones who first heard the signals: radio and then television. Then…the signals stopped.
Sharp and Edge were chosen to go investigate. The ship was ready. They were ready. Neither really believed that anything could live that close to the sun. The radiation must be beyond belief, and the heat! If that wasn’t bad enough, the planet was covered with liquid water. A solvent that could destroy almost anything given enough time. A deadly thing that could wreak havoc with Ammonia, or Methane…ugh.
If things went well, they could (with the proper protection) get to Mars. But any closer and they would die. Ammonia could keep them cool enough on Mars, as long as they didn’t expose themselves to the heat. Mars could kill them at noon. Oh sure, their pure crystal bodies would survive as a skeleton of sorts, but all of the inner structures would die. They would look like the insentient Crystals of their ancestors. No Ammonia coursing through their channels, or Methane cleansing their skin.
And so, they went.
It was obviously a machine. It was made of metal- a strange compound that neither Sharp nor Edge had ever seen, heard of, or imagined: Metal? How hot was their world that they shaped metal? The Machine had wheels…something else that they had never seen. It was frozen over by Ice and Sand. Way to hot for either Edge or Sharp to touch.
Sharp brought a Methane Blower out, to try and get the dust off of the artifact. It wasn’t necessary, as soon as they got close, the dust was instantly drawn to their cubist bodies by static electricity. The machine grew really hot…it started transmitting. The frequencies made both Sharp and Edge look like rainbows as the signals went through their bodies.
Diamond rain feelings set the piezoelectric affect into overdrive. It was almost to much for them. They were frozen in place by sheer pleasure, but hurting too. But the unbelievably hot metal machine kept beaming signals at them, and outwards. They turned to run back to the ship.
“Mike, look at this!”
Sylvia’s voice was on the edge of hysteria with a twinge of awe in it.
“Sure, Sylvia…what do you have?”
“Rover is transmitting again.”
“Not that Rover…Sojourner!”
“That thing stopped working years ago. It got covered with dust and couldn’t recharge. “
“Well it is working now.”
“I know…but…but…but… look!”
Mike (and everyone else at JPL in that room) gathered around to see what Sylvia was pointing to.
Was all Mike said.
For there, standing a few hundred feet away from the Rover, were two tall towers of Crystals. Crystals that couldn’t be from Mars. They were shining like Rainbows in a glass bottle.
A minute must have gone by…and then - everyone screamed.
The Crystals turned and walked away - walked!
Mike lifted the phone to call the President. Skipping the ordinary chain of command. Sylvia sent the pictures out over the Web, in case the Government - any Government - tried to hide what they just saw.
Sharp and Edge sat in the ship cooling down.
“What…what just happened?”
“I think, my friend, we were wrong. Something living built that machine. Something that can stand the heat, the water, and touching metal. Maybe it is alive. We need to do some thinking.”
“Where did it come from?”
“I scanned its programming when it sent those signals through our bodies- it is transmitting back to the same place we got those Radio and then Television Band signals. The third planet. “
“Edge, that can’t be. It is to hot! To close to the sun. And covered in liquid water.”
“I know. But that is where the signals are coming from.”
“My instruments show that it rains liquid water there.”
“Impossible. Rain is made of diamonds.”
“Not there. It is made of water.”
Edge and Sharp thought for a while.
A long while.
Everyone on Earth saw the video.
Two giant pillars of crystal bursting with colors inside their diamond like crystal clear bodies- waving.
All the resources of Earth were being utilized to get to Mars now.
The Crystal beings were able to communicate through light shifts. They said they were from Uranus.
