War
Born 2000, M, from Jamshedpur, IndiaThe war had been declared and the enemy was ready to attack on us anytime. We were well prepared to retaliate them.
Suddenly one night we were attacked. We did all we could to save the respect of our nation and the people living happily without any worries. They know that someone is there to protect them, and by saying that we protect you I don't intend to brag about it, but its true, isn't it. We're there on the border day and night ... sacrificing our happiness and putting the nation's safety, its respect and the people's safety on our "priority list".
I wanted to clarify something today. We fight the enemy not because we hate them but because we love the citizens of our country too much. Soldiers in service protecting you have a uniform, a gun, and let me remind you it doesn't make us any less human. We too are frightened by even the thought of war or a possibility of something so destructive happening. We do have emotions. We're always eager to go back to our native towns and meet our loved ones putting an end to the longing we suffer to see each other and spend some quality time with them. But we never take a day off. why?...
Because there's always a threat of somebody attacking us... may be another army or a terrorist organisation invading our "territory".
I've been lately very disturbed by some unanswered questions popping in my mind now and then. I wanted to know who's made these boundaries or imaginary lines dividing us humans. This anonymous person divided our beautiful planet Earth among different countries...but why was there a need to do it?
We are all humans and can't we live with each other without any kind of violence or divisions. The world was divided into different countries and we happily accepted it but why was there a need to divide people on the basis of caste... religion. What good has it done until today? All I see around the world is violence in the name of religion. I personally on the other hand don't follow any particular religion but I do respect the various traditions, cultures, religions around the world and people's faith in them. When somebody asked me what religion am I follower of, my only reply since my childhood has been "HUMANITY". Nobody understood me then and just laughed about it.
Now let's talk about the army. Those politicians sitting in air conditioned rooms find it very easy to declare wars on another country and send us to fight and die. They don't understand that just because we are in the army doesn't mean we are fond of wars or some kind of trigger-happy people. I completely agree that we go through a rigorous training in order to kill the enemy but aren't happy doing it.
In my opinion there is no need of this bloodshed and divisions. We are Humans "the finest creation of God"...and I believe God never wanted this mess to happen. He never wanted to see his own children die fighting with each other just for the sake of power.
So now let's get back to the war. Yes, it did happen and it's brutal and gruesome. All we could see was blood and soldiers lying dead. These were soldiers from our regiment and even those belonging to the other country we were fighting with. They all were once young officers full of enthusiasm and zeal who took an oath to protect their respective countries and even give away their lives if necessary as they did.
I was in a state of dismay surrounded by utter perplexity. I couldn't understand what the war was all about. When we die fighting on the battlefield we are called martyrs and heroes of war, but how does it become something different from normal deaths. Associating war and fighting with glory has been the myth I want to break. No-one thinks about what our families have to go through. Those awards and medals for bravery are worthless and they can never take the place of a human life.
I saw a soldier lying covered in blood struggling to breathe. I found no difference between our blood or the pain we were going through. All of a sudden, I got shot and fell down beside him. A grenade was thrown at me which exploded turning my whole body completely numb. He was my "enemy", or should I say that is the name politicians use and teach to rule over us... misguide us from the truth. Neither of us tried to kill each other. We just lay still looking into each others eyes, empathising the pain we both were going through.
On that day I realized war had nothing to do with peace. After some time I was unconscious and don't remember what happened next. All I have in my memory is the severed face of that soldier...the horrors of war. When I opened my eyes I found myself on a stretcher and I could see my friends and parents crying... praying to see me get well soon.
I was in a government hospital where I was taken immediately after I got injured. The nurse gave me a dose of anesthesia before the operation commenced. Here I am lying on the hospital bed fighting again...this time not with an enemy soldier but with death. The doctors have performed several surgeries as half of my face is burnt. I'm not able to see from my left eye. My right hand and both the legs had to be amputated. The doctor said I won't survive for more than a week and today is day six. I want to live. I want to meet my parents and friends.
But before dying I want to spread a message among people living all around the world. I request you all to take this fight which I've taken against violence further until we achieve our goal. Please stop wars and making weapons of mass destruction. We don't need them. All we need is love, kindness, brotherhood. Drop your weapons...break these walls dividing us. Let's hug each other and forget about whatever has happened in the past.
I'd like to end this little message I've recorded with a quote by Thomas Mann..."WAR IS A COWARDLY ESCAPE FROM THE PROBLEMS OF PEACE". This recording of mine would be broadcast globally tomorrow but sadly I won't be there to listen to it. Spread love and be kind to everyone.
This responsibility has been conferred upon all of us to make our beautiful planet Earth a better place to live.
