Everyone was fluttering with excitement as they headed to the meeting. Rumor has it that the Grand Council (Currently headed by the Fluform Society from Andromeda) had discovered Intelligent Life on Earth. Some rumors said that negotiations were already in progress to admit said Intelligence into the ranks of Beings.
If so, it would be:
a) The First sign of Intelligent Life on Earth- after more than 600 million years of study.
b) Only the second sign of Intelligent Life found that far out from the Center of the Galaxy. (Author’s Note: To be fair, there were seventeen “proto-intelligent" forms of life being studied on nearby planets, but most were a billion years or so away from even the preliminary requirements for Intelligence.)
c) The first time a non verbal Intelligent Species had been discovered. (Author’s Note: This does not include either the Froberingers from Cigna, or the Porfolites from Cassius B- those species were (and are) telepathic - which is not the same as non verbal.)
With more than Five thousand Sentient Beings from as many Planets present at the Grand Council- and another four trillion watching on their home planets- it would be the biggest announcement in more than six hundred million years.
Hopes were high.
The Head of the Grand Council, like all of the Beings belonging to Fluform Society, was tall, elegant, and well spoken. They also were noted for not rushing into things, in fact, just the opposite. All the other Beings knew the old joke about just how long a Fluform call of : “I will be there in a minute,” could be. There were no jokes about their failure to make correct assessments. They didn’t speak until they knew they were right, and then, just like personal mates - they wouldn’t shut up.
One flash of the Iota Machine (which stuns intelligence into paying attention) and all assorted visual collection spectra were focused on the towering Fluform presence with the unusual moniker : Bob.
Bob began to speak:
“We have, after much study and careful deliberation, decided that there is indeed, Intelligent Life on Earth.
The Entire Electromagnetic Spectrum lit up like a Nova, as all the known Species “applauded, cheered, and hooted” in their own manner.
“Further more, we are certain that this Intelligent Life managed to hide its presence even from us and our modern technology... for almost the last fifty thousand years."
If possible, the gasp from all the Sentient Beings was brighter than a Nova, and almost spilt out into a neighboring Universe…a true breach of protocol. But that is a different story.
The Collected Beings present at the Grand Council couldn’t have been more gabsmocked if you told them that only Water Planets evolved Intelligent Life. Ask any Star what they think of that, and you will get a snort filled with so much Gold you could open a Bank on any rocky planet.
“And here is the most difficult part to realize, they Domesticated all other species, without a single one realizing that they were being Domesticated.“
Now even Beings that don’t breathe, held their breath.
“It’s true. (and nobody doubted a Fluform’s veracity- ever) This Intelligent Species we found can’t walk, it can’t talk, it has no form of writing, speech, or art. It has no organization not provided by the species it has domesticated.
Every Being was spell bound. Like someone had left the Iota Machine running at full speed.
“This species domesticated at least five ambulatory creatures with primitive brains- until it practically restructured the entire food chain to allow this one creature to become its primary protector.
Listen to this. Our reports show that it made one of its Domesticated Species protect it, lowering that species own lifespan and health to one of constant drudgery and suffering. Then it made that same species live in crowded meaningless mobs, who continued giving up their own lives and dreams to serve this Intelligence. It even had this species make the technology that caught our attention.“
Now you could almost see fear developing in some of the Beings. What could this new Intelligence be like? What could make a promising evolutionary upstart stop its own path to intelligence to serve it? What kind of Intelligence could hide in plain sight with every technology possessed by the Grand Council.
Worry abounded where excitement had recently vacated the Council.
“The Committee has shown that every living animal, or primitive brain on the planet, except for some water creatures…is under the domestication of this one Intelligence. It is so smart that the creatures that it controls, think they are in control.
Now worry was replaced with hesitation. Should we even talk to this Intelligence? That question had already occurred to the Grand Council. So even though it wasn’t voiced, it was heard, and a reply given.
“We have contacted this Intelligence. It is willing to talk with us. It has even accepted trial membership. We have some of it here now, gathered by our own Survey Team. Let me introduce you to the newest Intelligent Species to be found in Millennia:
The Fluform named “Bob” stepped out of the way. A light shone down on the new Intelligent Species standing in what looked like straw hourglasses stalks. They spoke as one:
“Greetings fellow Beings.
We are from Earth.
There... they call us…Wheat.”
A few kernels fell unnoticed to the floor of the Grand Council. No one noticed but the Wheat.
It would take time, but Wheat knew it could Domesticate them all.
The light reflected almost an amber honey colored light from the Stalks- and many of the Beings came up to welcome them into the collection of Intelligent Species.
Wheat went home with many of them, largely unnoticed.
Knowing that somewhere down the line, every being would find bread.
