After years of building, the New Temple of Luxury was opened at the entrance to the city airport. It was the biggest airport in the country, and the ‘bestest’ luxury temple by far. It was made of glass and steel, and diamonds and gold glinted in the synthetic lights of the opening illuminations. All of the country’s ‘elite’, and especially the synthetic beauties created for the occasion, were here to greet the guests to the much-advertised ceremony. By the way, in our city such 'self-appointed elite' are called 'prominent sausages'.
Dignitaries had been enlisted from all over the globe. Many dignitaries came as invited -- to indulge in the free airfares, hotels rooms, free gifts, and promises of personal satisfaction. Each visitor was assigned an escort, each of which had the ‘latestest’ of beauty treatments. Everything was advertised as ‘bestest’, ‘newestest’, ‘latestest’ -- and a special new set of exalted words had been agreed upon by the Ceremonial Language Committee. Special costumes had been designed for the occasion, and these new creations could be purchased for as little as 25 million credits. Only the 'elite' could spend so much money on worthless luxury. We will report later the gossip and rumors about from whence the wealth came.
It was not considered a drawback that one had to strip naked at the security scanners to enter the Temple. For here the ‘elite’ could show off their new figures. Each had a beautiful body - which if not trained to perfection at one of the 'elitist' gyms, then the bodies had been supplemented at the 'elitist' beauty clinics. For those aged people, over the advanced age of thirty and for which there was no bodily hope, the offending parts of the bodies had simply been painted out with invisible paint.
About one-in-ten of the ‘elite’ could be bothered to attend the 'elitist' gyms regularly enough to make a bodily difference. They were usually sports persons who in any case could not perform if they did not train. Many of these had little conversation as these had trained their bodies at the expense of their minds. The sportsperson’s managers preferred this because they did not want to pay more to their created stars. The mangers could easily persuade their charges that they did not need more pay, and the sportspersons felt personally rewarded that managers should keep the monies for themselves.
The rest of the ‘elite’ maintained their status by severe beauty treatment. Many went to distant suspicious countries and came back transfigured by foreign surgeons. Some treatments just sucked away a larger part of a person. There were some cases where noses had migrated to the tops of heads, third eyes had appeared on one cheek, or mouths had thankfully been sewn shut. But those who had populated the local beauty salons suffered the disadvantage that after the treatment they all looked the same. The local politicians and beauty salon owners, who were often the same person, had come up with the brilliant plan of adorning all of the identical-looking elitist beauties with identification numbers on tags around their necks.
The gold tags were initially labeled with the names of the ‘elite’ persons. However, after a night of demonstrative indulgence most preferred to remain anonymous. So numbers were the 'label of choice', and these were randomly assigned at each event. This had the advantage or disadvantage, depending upon your viewpoint, that even if you did not know with whom you had arrived at an event therefore it did not matter with whom you went away. Often revellers at the regular flow of events for the identical ‘elite’, were more enchanted by the number of diamonds pinned in the number labels rather than the charm of the wearer. Sadly the whole ‘elite’ society had become one where demonstration of wealth was much more important than demonstration of talent. After several generations of wearing one’s wealth on open display the ‘elite’ had forgotten about the reason for being human. The whole business of social contact for exchange of ideas, wit and charm, had become one of promulgated vulgarity and disgusting petulance.
The whole ‘elite’ society was dominated by those who had twotted the day before. The twotting was manifest by the digital billboards lining the streets acclaiming the loudest and most primitive of the day’s twots. A twot, by the way, is named after the sound emitted by a dead bird. Perhaps the name had arisen to commemorate the demise of ‘elite’ society. Society was not lost completely, however – but more of that later!
One Emperor from distant country, who believed only in fairy tales, came wearing the proverbial ‘new suit of clothes’. His followers and attendants, who imitated any gasp of nonsense from their hero, all followed suit. The advantage today is that the whole planeload just walked into the Temple without having to take off their clothes at security.
Other distant dignitaries had sent their countries into hopeless debt. So hopeless that it would take several trillion years of tax collecting to clear their national debts. They had promised to spend their taxpayer’s money on improving their country’s infrastructure. For this duty they ruled that therefore they should themselves not pay any taxes -- so as not to confuse their issue. But rather they had spent the infrastructure money on luxury temples. They had installed golden statues of themselves in every corner of their republics. Not with the symbol of the banana as is common in tyrannical republics, but with the symbol of the orange. One journalist speculated that the 'elite' wished to believe they were descended from the 'sun god'.
After his attempts to change the constitution so that he could be Emperor for life or longer, the mentioned Emperor got bored with spending other people’s money. He resigned before he could be arraigned. He was succeeded by a 17-year old girl with pigtails - who had made her name telling the world that it was sinful to fly in aeroplanes. The demoted Emperor had maintained that he and his entourage flew with their own wings, therefore he was among the holy.
We as members of the world press reporting this ‘elite’ event of the year, at the New Temple of Luxury, are grateful to the pigtailed girl -- for she represents our real future. If you read the press reports of the last decades – that is if you manage to read press reports that were not rewritten by the True History Office, you would certainly see that much of human society was trapped in an endless downward spiral. A spiral of manufactured lies, not even half-truths, and downright falsehoods. The worst was that normal sensitive politicians had persuaded themselves that it was immoral not to lie, that is was holy to be false, and that one would be richly rewarded if you let the New Empire eat your soul. As one colleague said, "God had probably gotten fed up with having her name taken in vain so many times by those holier-than-thou sinners"!
The pigtailed Empress girl was to be forgiven for arriving by train instead of by plane. How this was done from overseas we do not yet know! The pigtailed Empress was also forgiven for advocating that the whole world should be propelled by electricity, so that poisonous fumes should not pollute our only atmosphere. The pigtailed Empress was also to be forgiven for answering ‘ I really don’t know!’ when asked about the source of the world’s electric power. All other politicians had assumed it was someone else’s problem to provide power to electric sockets without nuclear or fossil fuel sources. The world’s press after a few decades of tyrannical accusation was beginning to believe that they as journalists had caused the world’s problems. We, the press, are grateful to the pigtailed Empress for having the courage to point out that the world’s problems had indeed been caused by many of the world’s politicians and administrators appointed by them. Decades of them lying to the public had weakened the resolve of the human race, caused practically irreversible changes to the social system, produced an ‘elite’ that was hopeless, helpless, and consumed virtually all resources on our once-only planet.
The ‘elite’ were never to be forgiven for thinking that their world just ran itself. The ‘elite’ just assumed that there was always light, food, drink, clothing, warmth in winter, cooling in summer, transport to wherever. For decades the invisible workers have worn cloaking suits, or more recently invisible paint -- as far as the ‘elite’ were concerned, workers did not exist! The world just happened around the ‘elite’ – as it indeed should, according to the 'elitist bill of rights'!
When the ‘elite’ returned from some regal tour of a foreign country they were for a short time aware that different shapes, smells, and colors were to be found in the world. But please not at home – we only want us here! After all the land is ours! By right, by birth, by religion, by class, by proclamation, and by self-written history it is ours!
After this diatribe by the press, we find ourselves once again back at the entrance gates to the New Temple. Many of the prominent invitees were reluctant strip off their clothes to enter the Temple. They were not convinced that it was in the ‘interest of security’ to strip off their clothes in front of all viewers. Some of the invitees were from rich merchant families so were aware of the scam at airports where the travellers were obliged to relinquish their drinks and their cosmetics -- so that they could buy them anew on the other side of the scanners for three times the price outside. Some of the invitees were local lawyers and knew that legislation was being prepared to divest people of electronics, jewellery, and designer clothes at airports, so that they would be forced to buy everything new each time they went through the security. All the laws were written around the excuse of 'airport security' with the fear that expensive jewels, electronics and pink denim jeans bought for the normally inflated prices, could cause explosions on the planes! But to enter a shopping complex with full 'airport security' rules was getting towards an exploitation extreme? The obligatory clothes-stripping tonight was to ensure that all the expensive clothes could be donated to charity. These clothes would be temporarily replaced by cheap paper overalls that made the identical-looking ‘elite’ even more identical-looking! By the way, the 'donation charity for designer ware' was actually a very profitable enterprise of several of our local politicians - none of the resale profit actually found it's way to the claimed poor and needy!
The press were the only ones wearing ‘normal’ street clothes, which at this Time and Age of Mankind were dark green overalls with the prominent label ‘No need to Press”! The press delegates were aware of the thousands of souls running about wearing cloaking suits, or invisible paint, and doing all of the invisible work of the society. As noted above, the ‘new elite’ had been brainwashed, or genetically modified by generations of sociological abuse, into not seeing the workers. One press member did comment in his later article that the greatest loss by the ‘new elite’ was not appreciating the wide range of shapes and flavors among the workers and in the rest of the world. There was an abundance of richness and a treasure of wealth in the daily being of the workers. All the ‘new elite’ could do was to wander round in endless closed circles of their own desire, complain that nobody loved them, and squander the world's resources on selfish worthless activities! The ‘new elite’ murmured continually that they deserved much more, but with the lost ability to reason -- had no idea of what they were blabbering about!
Before we discuss the unexpected and most likely demise of the 'new elite', let us remember who we are talking about. As you have remarked there is more than one 'elite' on our world. We are talking here about a certain type of 'elite' defined as "ego-loaded-idiot-trampling-everybody". Some journalists refer to these as the 'new elite', and some socialists to these as 'vulgar elite'. These 'new elite' are clearly to be distinguished from the 'old elite' -- the sensible, civilized, well-behaved people who actually contribute to society. Nothing to do with social status or wealth, but rather simply of considerate human behavior. Many sociologists had remarked that most animals also belonged to our behavioral definition of the 'old elite' - clearly a class above the 'vulgar elite'. Finally to finalize our perspectives, one prominent leader of the 'vulgar elite' commented, "We are not descended from apes like the rest of you, we 'elite' are the children of angels".
Those of us from the press, relegated to dark green overalls for the event at the New Luxury Temple, were left to speculate what happened to the thousands of 'new elite' privileged to attend?
It is true that the elite thousands disappeared into the New Temple, and the doors to our part of the airport were permanently closed. It is true that not long afterwards, flocks of jets, emblazoned with 'new elite symbolism' thundered down the runways and disappeared into distant skies. When asked afterwards, the flight controller's records about recent departures were all surprisingly empty.
It is widely rumoured that the young pigtailed Empress was able to convince the 'new elite' of the worthlessness of their existence. Soon the monasteries and convents were overloaded with applicants seeking 'penniless salvation'. Hordes of ex-elite got the message and applied for social work in hospitals, and sewage works. The press slowly returned to being the organisation that moderated the world. Those press members who had preferred to support the 'new elite' mostly became converted to the new old ways. There was hope again in the world, now that mankind could focus on the reality of simple everyday life -- instead of being forced to participate in the irreal permanent continuous 'television show' of the 'vulgar elite'.
