Briar was so excited to be coming to her Poppa and Nanas house for the night.
Dancing her way into our house to the chimes of the door bell. I still have jingle bells playing on it from Christmas last year.
She tells her mummy and daddy she’s happy enough and they can leave.
We run through all the things she can and can not have. Vegetables for dinner please, her mum tells her and tells me.
Yes I am thinking I know Briar loves Baked Beans.
Well it does have the word bean in it. Ice cream for pudding, hot chocolate with marshmallows for a treat. Yes everything mummy and daddy said, or not.
We have our usual playtime and a little tv before bed. We read Going on a bear hunt. It’s our all time favourite. Sometimes we climb into our hut under the stairwell where it’s dark like a cave and pretend we are in the forest and bears are coming .
There are butterflies stickers on the walls, a chair for each of us and a little kennel with a toy lion that roars when we touch him.
Well then comes the really fun time. Putting Briar to bed. We take a half hour to put on PJs. Empty out her little travel bag, pull her snack box to pieces to see what she might like to snack on before bed.
Right then we are ready for bed.
Nana “Briar bedtime”
Briar “I didn’t have my milk”
Nana gets her a cup of milk.
Nana. “Hop into bed Briar”
Briar. “I haven’t brushed my teeth”
We brush Briars teeth.
Nana “hop into bed Briar”
Briar “I’m thirsty nana”
Nana gets a drink of water. Whoops I spill the water all over the bedside cabinet. A quick clean up and back to the bedtime thing.
Finally we tuck Briar up on a little pint sized air bed next to our bed.
I walk out and turn off the light.
Briar yells out “nana where’s tot and my dummy“
I find tot, her much loved cuddle bear that she takes to bed every night, and her dummy. Tot and Briar and her dummy are all tucked in.
Briar yells out “I’m scared nana”
Nana “ok I’ll hop into bed beside you”
We climb into my bed and Briar lies down and giggles. I tell her to close her eyes.
Eyes closed, kicks the blankets off. It’s the middle of winter so I’m a bit cold. Blankets back on and off at least a half a dozen times.
Blankets have been on for at least 2 minutes and no noise, Briar must be asleep and rolls onto me.
That’s fine I won’t move a muscle. She face plants me, nose to nose, but I keep my eyes closed for the next 10 seconds. I open my eyes and we are eye to eye and she has a grin on her face a mile wide.
I start laughing and that starts her laughing but finally she falls asleep. At this stage I am thinking she really knows how to play me but I really don’t mind. How could I, she’s just so cute.
I gently kiss my gorgeous girl and put her onto her little air bed.
Exhausted we are not far behind her and fall asleep quickly.
2:00 am, Briar is awake and looking at me with her arms outstretched to be lifted into bed. I lift her in.
2:30 am Briar is sound asleep but on the move. Roll over, roll over, so we all rolled over and poppa fell out, there were 2 in the bed and the little one said at the top of her voice.
“Where’s Poppa gone”
All you could see was Poppas feet. He decided that the top and tail trick was his best option and he might get some sleep.
Back to sleep after Briar was happy her Poppa was still there.
3:00 am, We are all sound asleep and here we go again, roll over roll over. So we all roll over and nana falls out. There was 1 in the bed and the little one said.
“Where are you nana?"
Nana had the comfy air bed on the floor. Oh how peaceful for at least 10 minutes.
I climb back into bed and cuddle up to Briar. She farts and announces poppa has farted and laughed. We can’t help but laugh along with her.
We fall back to sleep quickly.
5:58 am. I get a text. Briars mum wondering if we were awake. Well of course we are awake its 5:58 am on a Saturday morning.
We all wake up and have coffee/ hot chocolate in bed.
Briars mummy and daddy miss her so much they arrive at 7:00am to pick her up. Briar announcers to her parents,
I get the look.
We have a nap at about 10:30 am that morning.
Love our nights with the grandkids, they certainly give us a few laughs.
Parents phone me and ask why Briar is exhausted. I can’t help myself and laugh.
