Ghost chase

Ghost chase

I feel like l have just become short-sighted, l can hardly see a thing. All is just dust, grey and blurry. I can’t even clearly picture my mom and my sister running as fast as they can a few yards ahead of me. It’s hard for me to figure out if its dawn or dusk. The ground and surrounding environment are bare, no sun, no birds, no trees, no other form of life except my mom, sister and l, who have gained distance on me.

I am running trying to chase after them, trying to catch up. But it seems fruitless so far, the distance between us keeps on increasing. my legs feel heavy as if big stones have been tied on me to slow me down. I am failing to run as fast as l normally do. I call after my mom for her to wait for me, but no voice comes out of me.

Alarmed, l try to scream to myself, but still, no sound comes out of me. Fear and panic are creeping up on me. I keep stumbling and falling. I just can’t keep up. I am now bruised all over, panting, wheezing and gasping for air, l fall once more.

This time l do not try to get up immediately, l decide to rest a little. Then a loud eerie rustling noise gets me turning my head behind sharply.

There is a ghastly looking form of a lady behind me clothed in a brown dirty long shapeless dress, no feet, no real head, just a skull with hollow empty eye sockets, and elongated skinny bones for hands that keep trying to reach out to grab hold of me.

I leap to my feet and speed off towards my mom and sister, with better speed this time. Tears are streaming down my cheeks, my eyes show full signs of extreme terror, l bet now l look whiter than the ghost lady chasing after us.

Setting eyes on the ghost lady boosted my speed a little, now l begin catching up with my family. But all of a sudden, it seems like they cross over to another side. My mum and sis both hold out their hands from the other end trying to get me to jump to safety where they now are. I brace myself and take a high leap so that l can land on the other side too, but l miscalculate the distance.

I start falling and in the background, l hear my family’s voices scream out my name as the distance separating us widens. l land on something hard and solid, it’s the floor in my room.

I am sweaty and shaking, but as l look to my side, my sister is sleeping peacefully. My mum probably is in her bed too. I guess it all was just a dream, or a ghost did take us for a ride today, l do not know.

The problem is just that now l am too scared to do anything, except crawl closer to my sister and hope that daylight comes faster since l can’t afford to sleep and return to my horrible nightmare again.

Well done! A story full of imagination and suspense.
Very creative despite its horror style

Hilary,
I agree with Rati J.'s comments completely. I generally don't like Horror, but this one hits home with all the scary thought most of us find only in our dreams (luckily!).
Well done.

Hi Hilary ,
Till the last couple of lines your story seemed to be a horror tale and it left me guessing and imagining. But in the last line you blended a reality (unknown but still clear) with your nightmare which was very fine. The symbolism (" crawl closer to my sister and hope that daylight comes faster since I cant afford to sleep and return to my horrible nightmare again") touches the reader's heart. And your story also holds attention as there is lot of involvement in your dream.
Loved your story!!!
Good day!!! :-) :-)
