The grey sky seemed more dismal after the heavy rain pounded the forest and left the animals scurrying for cover. Dirt had turned into mud and it looked like the rain had almost started a flood. The unexpected rainstorm had left three Egyptian explorers shipwrecked on an island off the coast of Brazil. The ship, La Vagabond, was the final ship built in the 1820s fleet, La Croix, and had passed all safety checks before the journey which left the men doomed to save their lives.
“Akh, do you know where we are? The compass was shattered and there is no way to find our direction.” Jabari asked. Nile, the third crew member half-heartedly answered, “There might be no way to find our way back home.” the two Egyptian explorers turned to Akh, who looked like he was staring into space. “Akh, do you have any idea how we can get back home?” asked Jabari. “There is no way.” grumbled Nile. Akh thought for a bit. Then, he answered, “I know! We can follow the North Star! It always points north!” Jabari cheered. Nile did not. Instead, Nile went to start inventing a ship, and he didn’t listen to Akh’s warnings. “Nile! That is not going to be a good idea. We could end up stuck in a remote island with nothing to help us!” warned Akh. But Nile did not listen. He simply kept on building. “Akh, I am tired of arguing with you. You always think you are the best and you try to boss me around! Why don’t you boss Jabari around? Because he is your friend!” Nile yelled with frustration and jealousy. “Why can’t Akh boss around someone else? He thinks I am not good enough! I am tired of him always thinking he is really smart.” Nile thought. “Fine! Since you do not appreciate me helping you, I will leave you alone and help Jabari instead!” Akh argued back. “Fine with me!” Nile shouted back. Jabari noticed what was going on and quickly stopped the fight. “Guys! What use are you making by just standing there and arguing?” scolded Jabari. Nile and Akh immediately stopped arguing because they already knew that Jabari was brave and could change from fun to strict in less than a millisecond. Jabari made Nile and Akh mumble apologies and then made them get back to work. This time, Nile and Akh were helping each other under Jabari’s instructions.

09/02/2019That's a great story about people learning to work together, and also how a leader is needed in many circumstances, and the way a leader can emerge through struggle and can help others work better together for the common good. Well done, Samantha. Congratulations on being selected as one of the Short Story STARS of the Week, and thank you for sharing your short stories for kids on Storystar! :-)
