As the sun lowered, everyone in town knew that dusk was approaching. The children ran home to reach the safety of their parents and escape the night of the world. As the children ran home, they would pick up berries to eat at night so they could protect the children the next night. As said in legends, these berries would keep children safe for the night before they got back to their parents. But if they didn’t pick the berries every night they would have a bad time sleeping and have worse than imagined nightmares. But, ONCE, a child cheated this legend.
This child’s name was Jing. He avoided this berry picking myth when he was 9 years old as he was coming home from drawing class. This drawing class would start at 8:00 and go to 9:30, and then he would walk home and take 15 minutes to get to his house. Jing would come home from drawing class every day and his parents would always ask him if he picked the berries and he would say “yes” and show them his container of the juicy, sweet fruit. His mom would then proceed to make a delicious berry pie and they would have it for dessert after dinner. Then Jing and his parents would have a relaxing evening at home before bedtime.
The day Jing cheated this legend he was coming home from drawing class and forgot to pick the berries. So when Jing got back home, his parents asked him if he picked them and Jing said yes because he really thought he had picked them. He didn’t have his usual container so checked his pockets, as he had sometimes put them there. He didn’t find any berries. But Jing kept telling his parents that he got the berries and then told them that he wanted to go outside. His parents only let him play for 15 minutes. As Jing’s parents said yes, he ran outside as fast as he could.
As Jing ran as fast as he could to get to the berry patch to pick some berries, three minutes had already passed. It was already extremely dark so Jing had to use his time wisely and went to try and find some berries. After five minutes of searching, Jing didn’t find any berries and he didn’t have a lot of time left. So he told himself that the night was going to be all right and he didn’t have to worry about nightmares. He then ran home and got inside and Jing’s parents told him to go and get washed up, so Jing went to the bathtub and had a nice bath.
After Jing put on his pajamas, he went to his room and got into bed and tried to sleep. But Jing knew that he couldn’t sleep and the darkness suddenly made him scared of what nightmares might come. After a few hours of staring at the ceiling, he tiptoed into his parents room, climbed into their bed and fell soundly asleep. The next morning Jing woke up before his parents did, and he didn’t want his parents to know that he slept in their bed. So Jing went back to his room and acted like he just woke up. This is how Jing cheated this legend.
