As long as they left me alive
Born 1995, F, from Harare, ZimbabweAs long as they left me alive
This has become the slogan lately
The stench of poverty suffocates me
Not even my degree can save me
My pockets are empty
My salary cannot feed my babies
Healthcare has become a luxury for the near to death
Electricity, running water and a proper roof on my head, are no longer priorities
I dont buy new clothes, if l do l get them second hand at the flea market
I dont cook fancy meals, its now pap and stew all the way
For special occasions an additional tiny piece of beef will do
My kids no longer have memory of the good old days
Where we would serve a bowl of custard or ice cream after dinner
They have forgotten the taste of bread
Its now always pap, stew and samp
My wife is drained by all this poverty
But what can we do
What can anyone do
I cannot complain to the government
I have no freedom of speech
We tried peaceful demonstration, but we were gunned down
We tried violent demonstration, the results were the same
No one cares enough to listen
The ones that care do not have enough power to save us
I cannot beg, its all poverty around me
Only the corrupt eat now
And the top dogs in Power
All l can do is wait for a better day
Because even vacating this Forsaken country has been ruled out as an option
No one wants my kind in their countries
They are tired of us Zimboz
This is the reason why l have adopted my new slogan
As long as l am alive for today
Then that is it
That's my slogan
As long as they left me alive
As long as they left me alive(Hilary)

08/19/2019I hope that the future that awaits us isn't as bleak as the one described here. By the way, this is a pretty good story
