Hunter was only 3 when he was first introduced to his poppas handshake.
Poppa shook the hand with just a little force. Enough to make Hunter cringe but laugh at the same time. He tried very hard to return his handshake with force.
Poppa would jump back and say, ouch Hunter that hurt.
He would giggle his little boy giggle with pride that he had as much strength as his poppa.
The first handshake came after an entire day of learning to ride his bike.
His mum had called in a panic. “Dad, Hunter can’t ride his two wheeler and it’s bike day on Monday”
Poppa, “drop him off with his bike for the day”
The look on that kid’s face when he rode 100 metres without falling off was priceless.
Well that was the first of many a handshake between them.
Every time we saw Hunter they had the meet and greet and the farewell handshake. Over the years the shake got a little stronger each time. Poppa would twist the knuckles and Hunter would try his hardest to twist them back just as hard.
Hunter would Yelp, poppa would Yelp, I would stand and say, “when are you guys going to get over this knuckle fight?"
Years have gone and Hunter is much taller than his poppa, his hands are bigger and his grip is stronger.
When they shake hands now days Hunter is very careful not to hurt his poppa.
They still do the yelp thing.
