The Trevi Fountain Creator

“Now it is time for the ceremonial penny toss where Dominic and Ally will each toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain in hopes of a good marriage. Dominic, will you go first?” The priest asked as Dominic took the coin from the priest, faced his family members, and threw the coin over his shoulder as the family clapped. “May God bless you. Ally, you are next. Please take this coin and do as your husband did.” The priest said as he hands Ally a shiny new penny. Ally took the penny, threw it behind her back but instead of clapping she watched her family member’s faces go from joy to shock as they pointed behind her. She heard a loud crash and bravely looked behind her to see a young man standing on the Trevi Fountain. He was covered in dust and slabs of various sized concrete laid all around him. “My name is Giuseppe Pannini. I am the co-creator of the Trevi Fountain.”
Giuseppe said as he stood directly in the center of the fountain but still an arms width away from Dominic and Ally. No one could say a word, the entire family was speechless. “What do you want?” Dominic bravely asked. “I want to do what is right. Day after day I see people come from all across the world in hopes of throwing a coin in and receiving a wish. I am sick of seeing this person never receive their wishes. I watch them hope and pray and be full of optimism. All that changes today with this book.” Giuseppe said as he reached behind the Neptune statue and took out a leather book. “You see, this book has every wish ever made at the Trevi Fountain,” Giuseppe said as he held up the leather book for all the family members to see. “I have been waiting for this day. You see, one of the seven other architects made me into a statue because I would grant random wishes for different people and today since the bride paid my fare.” Giuseppe stopped and tipped his hat towards Ally. “I can go back and finally grant wishes that I have been waiting to grant for decades. The best part is I can choose any severity of a wish I want, and no one can tell me what to do.” Giuseppe said as he hopped off the fountain’s balcony, went through the water, over the wall of the fountain, and down the alleyway in front of the fountain until he was completely out of sight. Everyone turned to look at Dominic and Ally expecting them to have an answer. Ally looked at Dominic with uncertainty as her dad and mom rushed to the altar.
“Whats an Italian wedding without a little drama?” Her dad said to the crowd but they were so worried, they weren't listening to a word he said. “Sam, what happened?” Aly’s grandpa worryingly asked her dad. “Why don't we get out of the heat and go into the nice air-conditioned banquet hall and talk?” Her dad asked as he signaled Dominic and Aly to help him out of the chair and they led him down the aisle. Just as they hoped, the rest of the family followed them into the banquet hall. Before Ally could figure out what to do next, she saw her dad and mom going from guest to guest trying to comfort everyone. “Aly and Dominic, do you have a second to talk? It's very urgent, this is not good.” The priest sternly said, setting a little fear in both Aly and Dominic. Aly shook her head yes as they followed him to an empty table. “Father Jax, I want you to tell me everything you know.” Dominic concerningly said as all three of them sat down.
“I only know a few things. I will start at the beginning that starts in 19 B.C. The Trevi Fountain was originally built so that water from the Salone Springs could travel 14-miles to Rome so the Roman Baths could be used. Augustus’s son-in-law Agrippa was the very first person to work on the fountain. They used the fountain for centuries but they wanted something more. So, Pope Urban VIII commissioned Gian Bernini to come up with a new plan to build the Trevi Fountain. Unfortunately, Pope Urban VIII never saw the project completed because he died and the project was put on hold as a result. Fast forward a century later, Pope Clement XII opened up a contest in 1730 for a new architect to try and complete the fountain. Alessandro Galilei won the contest, but there was one problem, he was florentine.” The priest said as he stopped for a second to gather his thoughts. “Wait, Alessandro Galilei? As in the Alessandro Galilei who was part of the famous Galileo family who are known for their scientific discoveries?” Dominic asked curiously as he sat in his chair looking shocked. “Yeah, crazy right? Well, it gets even crazier. Alessandro was denied and couldn't complete the fountain because he was Florentine and they wanted a Roman to work on it. So they choose the second runner up, Nicola Silva, who was a Roman. The pope told Nicola that it was to be built in Trevi Square and he could have free-range on how he designs it. Nicola used a lot of Gian Bernini’s original design of the fountain. Again tragedy struck, and Nicola died in 1751 before the fountain could be finished. Between 1751 and 1762 when the Trevi fountain was finally completed, four different architects were hired to work on the fountain and they each put their designs and taste into how the fountain looked. Giuseppe Pannini was the last and final architect who completed the Trevi Fountain. He was credited for fully completing the fountain, but the other architects didn't like him because they knew something everyone else didn't.” The priest said as he looked at Dominic and Aly. “They witnessed him granting different wishes to the people who came to the fountain to see it’s progress as it was being completed. The fountain part was always around throughout the 30 years to complete the fountain so they would drop in coins as a sign of good luck. He got so mad when he saw people throwing in money and watching people be disappointed because something he was building wasn't having a good impact on the Italian community. So he decided to grant random wishes, and this angered the other architects who were trying to keep the people from throwing coins in and getting in their way while they were working.” Father Jax looked sharply at Aly and Dominic.
“Now this is where it gets serious. As a priest, I don’t trust many things that involve people and their beliefs. Some people make up crazy things in their heads and then release it as a wish into the Trevi Fountain in hopes that their crazy wish is granted. So, we must recover this wish book before Giuseppe decides to flood Italy with a whirlwind of harsh wishes. Also, we have to make sure that no tourists throw a coin into the fountain, it may release another person from a statue. That would result in Giuseppe having a partner granting his wishes. Now let's get up slowly and slip out before anyone sees us, don't tell your parents you're leaving.” The priest said as he casually stood up and exited the banquet hall. Aly and Dominic exchanged glances and quickly looked around before following the priest out the door. “Get down!” The priest said as he dragged Aly and Dominic into a crouch as soon as they stepped out the entrance onto the pavement. “El Guiseppe overa therea.” The priest said trying to be discreet as he pointed to the roof of the store next to the Trevi Fountain. “Hey, you!” They heard Giuseppe shout from the roof to a couple walking by. “Can you throw this coin in the fountain?” He asked as he tossed a coin to the couple who stopped to observe him on the roof. “Oh no.” Father Jax said as the couple picked up the coin and chucked it into the fountain. “Trevi-Trevi-Trevi Fountain, may you grant this wish,” Giuseppe shouted at the top of his lungs as he opened the leather book to the last page. “This couple wishes for a dog.” All of a sudden, there was a loud rumble and a dog came around the store corner. “Aw, oh my gosh!” The couple squealed as they chased after the dog who was now booking it down the storefront alleyway in front of the Trevi Fountain. Aly and Dominic shockingly looked at each other as Giuseppe thumbed through the wish book. “Heres one that I can use. Trevi-Trevi-Trevi Fountain I wish to be a modern 21st-century boy and fit in with the tourists.” Giuseppe said as a puff of smoke formed around him and then cleared to reveal Giuseppe now having straight brown hair and a tank-top with shorts on and flip-flops. As opposed to his curly white hair and old-Italian clothing.“Much better.” He said as he made his way across the building’s rooftop and down the staircase on the side of the building. “What do we do now?” Aly asked in astonishment. “We have to get the book, it may be small spells for now but soon he will get bored and go to bigger spells.” Father Jax said as he got up from his crouched position and beckoned for Aly and Dominic to do the same. “We must follow him.” Father Jax said as he took off running down the alleyway following Giuseppe who was gaining distance. Giuseppe quickly hailed down a cab and was off by the time we managed to catch up with him. Dominic wasted no time and put out his hitchhiker thumb to stop a taxi.
