The Hotel in the mountains, where the toy bears Hercules and Bubblegum lived, stood on a small hill by the rapidly flowing river. The bigger gardens of the hotel were cared for by Hans. The small herbal garden which supplied the kitchen, was looked after by Heidi. Hans said that he didn’t know why but for the last three mornings he had found the toy bears lounging in the gazebo at the far corner of the garden, instead of their usual place on the window seat in the big hotel lounge.
The hotel house had at one time been a small castle, now with low walls on the steep rocky sides of the hill. Within this low wall were a herb collection, a vegetable patch and a rose garden. At the corner of the garden at the angular meeting of the two low walls was a former watchtower of the castle now converted into a gazebo. Here visitors could find a quiet corner away from the bustle in the hotel.
Hans asked Heidi if she knew anything about the small stage and theater curtains that had been set up in the gazebo. Heidi knew nothing and said she would ask in the hotel what it was all about. Heidi came back from asking in the hotel, and reported to Hans that no one knew anything about the small theater in the gazebo. Also no one had any idea why Hercules and Bubblegum were to be found there the last three mornings.
Perhaps some of the visiting children were playing theater suggested Hans.
“Well I thought of that too!” replied Heidi, ”But right now there are only adults staying in the hotel. Perhaps they like midnight theater?”
“Let’s look again in the gazebo tomorrow morning”, said Hans, and went off to do his various tasks.
Heidi and Hans both were busy the whole day. They met again before first light the next morning and strolled along the gravel path to the gazebo.
“I don’t understand these scratches in the gravel. I raked the path yesterday evening. It looks like somebody has been pushing a wheelbarrow”, commented Hans.
When they reached the gazebo the curtains were partly drawn together so Hans and Heidi peeped through the gaps in the curtains.
“Just look at that”, whispered Heidi, “All of the hotel pets and the toys from the hotel lounge are all asleep inside the theater”.
Sure enough the two dogs and two cats from the hotel were asleep by the theater stage. In addition to Hercules and Bubblegum; the toy sheep, the toy lion and the toy tiger were also lying in sleeping positions on the stage. Also the toy giraffe, toy monkeys and toy elephant were lying in the wheelbarrow, which was standing inside the door of the little gazebo theater.
“I can’t believe it”, whispered Hans. “Some field animals are sleeping here too -- and pointed to two small mice, a weasel, and a young badger all cuddled together close to the wheelbarrow.”
All of the animals looked so serene and happy that Hans and Heidi decided to leave them for a while. When Heidi and Hans went after sunrise to the gazebo, everything had been tidied up. The wheelbarrow had gone, and the path had been raked. When they looked into the hotel lounge, the toys were all back in their regular places and the pet animals were sleeping now by the big hotel fireplace. More strange there were no humans about!
“I think we should go to the gazebo tonight after all hotel guests and staff have gone to sleep, and when the hotel porter is having his midnight nap”, suggested Heidi.
After midnight, Heidi and Hans crept quietly towards the gazebo. Here, unexpectedly, a few lights were shining and soft music was playing. They peeked through the gaps in the curtains and were totally surprised. They could not believe their eyes. For there on the stage were Hercules and Bubblegum, the toy sheep, the toy lion and the toy tiger giving a moving theatrical performance with voices, from some unknown theater piece. Hans and Heidi stood speechless but grinned heartily at each other, as the other toys, hotel pet animals and field animals loudly applauded the wonderful show. It was unbelievable of course but Heidi and Hans knew they were seeing something spectacular. Hans and Heidi crept away quietly and let the toys and animal friends have the night to themselves and their wonderful theater.
The next morning Heidi and Hans met while performing their own duties in the garden near the gazebo. Hans said to Heidi, “ I don’t know why I had such a strange dream last night. I dreamt that the hotel toys and animals were enjoying theater in the gazebo”.
“Well that’s amazing”, replied Heidi to Hans, ”I had a similar dream that Hercules and Bubblegum were performing with the other toys, and the hotel pets had invited friends in from the fields to enjoy the show”.
“Dear Heidi”, laughed Hans, “Perhaps we are both a little bit crazy with our dreams. But they are wonderful friendly dreams that make one happy. It is truly amazing that we both had similar dreams. There must be some magic around those toy bears!”
Hans and Heidi did not see Hercules and Bubblegum wink at each other while sitting on their familiar window seat in the hotel lounge. No one in the hotel noticed that Hercules appeared to be chewing, and that Bubblegum had just blown a bubble!
