Black Lion
By Ayush
Dina’s scars were barely hidden for the torn, dangling sack that wrapped her body hardly qualified as a clothing; her breasts hung loosely, her ribs stuck out, making her look like a starving corpse. The night was cruel and the wind, brutish; the desert around, embellished with hazel shrubbery and ornamented with scattered carcasses, was lamenting to the crawling scorpions, about her desolation. Dina would fall flat on the moaning sand, every now and then, and would gaze at the sky that unfurled, ceaselessly, beyond the barren hills; it’d remind her of the life form, which once dwelled under this vast blanket, which now struggled every day for survival. She’d walked far, but it was still far, her destination; the last mark on the face of the arid planet, that the earth had become.
It was a pub; she was looking for an establishment by the name Black Lion, some survivors were using that facility to grow indoor crops like lettuce greens, carrots, kales and others.
A step ahead and Dina knew her right foot was paralyzed; she stumbled and fell on the chalky sand, cursing her skeleton torso for being a burden on her bony legs. She nailed her slender fingers in the dense sand bed and tried to drag herself farther, using her left foot.
Failed, she turned about, panting; her bulging eyes shut and when they did, they hurt. For the first time in all those days of tussle against the rigorous life, she wanted to die; having fought in a stout-hearted battle of survival, she realized, she was a human after all.
She was floating down, into the ocean of deep sleep; they said it relieved people- she knew it didn’t, all the memories of a vibrant planet came flooding her way as she slipped deeper and deeper into the darkness.
“Mam, can you hear me, mam?” it sounded as if the sky was awake, and was answering her long-sought questions, at last. “I saw her eyelids move,” came another voice, a different one; “mam try to open your eyes, we’re from the Black Lion pub,” said a yet different person, “We’ve brought scallions and kale, that’s all we got for now”.
And hence with Dina, hope opened her eyes; yet again.
