In a beautiful suburb located just near the outskirts of chicago, there lived two families. Two very different families who were planning on celebrating the holidays to their fullest.
At Bran’s House:
Bran is the only son of supremely wealthy parents. His dad is the managing partner at one of the cities’s most leading legal firms and his mom is an executive chairwoman for a leading automobile manufacturer.
Bra , who is 6 years old now, has been flourished with all sorts of royal gifts and presents by his loving parents, thanks to their immense financial resources which could probably last for multiple generations of their family.
“Wake up sweety. It’s time to open your presents.” Miranda, bran’s mom, was trying to get her son up so she can start showing her presents to surprise the kiddo.
Bran woke up with a beam of smile, still rubbing his eyes.
“Tell you what. You can close your eyes until you see your present. That was it is more surprise isn’t it?”.
“Yes mom!!!”
Bran covered his eyes and was filled with joy on what might be waiting there for him this time.
Miranda walked her son slowly across the corridor, to the stairs, and through the main door.
Bran could feel the fresh air just breezing across his hair and body.
“Open your eyes now, sweetie”.
It was a quadcopter. An all new Quadcopter droner freshly made and imported, consisting of pro cameras and advanced remote control technologies.
Bran has always been fond of flying things, from butterflies to aeroplanes and helicopters. He loves cars though. There is a different between being fond of something and loving something. And flying things were not a love for bran. But nevertheless, he was happy.
Bran hugged his dad who was waiting for him with the remote control in his hands,.
“Thanks Daddy!!”
“Have at it son”.
Bran grabbed the remote control and within a few seconds , figured out how to get the drone in air.
“You can play with it for a while, then get changed and lets go meet your grandma, ok hon?” His mom said while still happily seeing her son get excited and play with his gift.
Bran nodded. He was too into the drone to really listen to his mom.
He is the kind of boy who loves to experiment and figure things out himself. He tried all the operators on the remote and tried to figure out what they did.
Until….he pushed a button named “turbo” and the drone lost its ascend, went almost ground level but without touching the ground, it boosted towards the opposite side of the road entering another home.
Just across the road from bran’s house, there was another home. But this one was different. It didn’t have a big driveway,or a bunch of fancy cars parked out.
It was the smallest house in the entire suburb and if there was a beauty contest among the houses, it would definitely too easily grab the last position. And in that house, lived another loving family, much less rich, but equally loving and happy family, who had a son named Ryan who also was 6 yrs old.
At Ryan’s house:
“I wish we could have bought a more fancier dress for our son you know”.
Michelle, Ryan’s mom was n’t too happy about the dress they bought for their little boy.
“Well, its not so bad. I mean, it’s not all fancy and shiny, but it is indeed new and quite simple, which suits our son. He is a simple boy isn’t he?, said Dave, ryan’s dad.
“One day we will buy him a great one and see how he reacts”.
Ryan and Michelle smiled at one another.
“Wake up honey”.
Michelle was sitting at the side of the bed and was gently rubbing Ryan’s hair.
When the sweet voice and the ruffling of hair didn’t do the trick of waking him up, a loving pinch on his cheek had him get up in a jiff.
“Awwww”.
“So, that’s what I need to do then. Pinch your cheek and you will be up in a second uh?”
Ryan slighly rubbed his cheeks and smiled at his mom.
“Come on kiddo, get up, it’s present time.”
That was enough for Ryan. He ran across to the hall, where his dad was holding a well packed box of rectangular, big enough for it to excite Ryan.
“There’s my boy. Here, open and see it for yourself. I hope you like it.”
His dad handed him the box and watched with happiness.
After much struggle with the wrap, poking it, tearing it, even biting it until the disapproval of doing that by his mom, he finally got it to open. And…..it was a car. A simple toy car. The one without remote and stuff, the good old fashioned one where you play with the car using your hands.
Despite it being fairly dull present, Ryan didn’t think so.
He was excited to see it. He loved cars as well. And he liked to think himself as a racer whenever he sits in one. The second after opening the wrap, he took the car in his hand and started to push it on the floor.
“After you are done playing with it, go brush your teeth and I will make you your favorite breakfast, hon”.
Ryan probably didn’t hear it. He was too busy having fun his new present.
Afer almost an hour of playing with his car. Ryan finally got tired and decided to look for breakfast.
“Mom, where are you? I’m hungry.”
Ryan was sitting at the table touching his tummy.
“I’ll be right there ryan. Did you put your car in a safe place?”
Ryan thought about it.
“It’s near the doorstep mom.”
“Well, go and keep is somewhere safe hon. Someone might step on it if they are not careful.”
Ryan rushed to keep his car safe. But he was too late.’
When he went to the hall, He saw his broken car and a huge drone beside it.
At Bran’s house:
“Mommmmm, Daddddddddd I lost the drone.”
“Woaah. Tune down son. What do you mean you lost it?”, his dad asked.
“I was playing with it and suddenly I hit a button it flew to the house across the street.”
“Ah, right. That’s not being lost son. We’ll just go get it back.”
Bran and his dad walked towards the house across the street to get their drone back.
“Mommmmmm, someone broke my car.”
Ryan was almost teary eyed as he screamed for his mother.
“What?”
His mom rushed to ryan and took a lot at his car. The side mirrors and the top were broken, probably were the drone hit the car when it came at it fast paced.
Ryan clearly was upset and Michelle was too.
Then they saw bran and his dad arrive at the doorstep.
“Hey. Sorry to disturb you but my son was playing with his drone and it flew into your house.”, Bran’s dad said.
Ryan took the drone from the floor and held it.
“Come in.”, Michelle said.
“Are you guys new to the neighborhood”?.
“Yes, actually. We moved in only a month ago”, said Michelle while still looking at her upset son.
“Oh , that’s great. Welcome then. Sorry to have disturbed you though. I just came here to get the drone back.”
“Well, sure. But you know, your drone hit my son’s car and it’s broken.”
“Oh?”, Bran’s dad sounded confused.
Michelle held up the car to show the damage.
Bran’s dad suddenly grabbed the drone from ryan’s dad, almost forcefully and had a good look at his drone.
“Thank god. The drone isn’t damaged. Here bran, take it.”
Bran took the drone but his eyes were fixed at the car that michelle was holding.
“I would appreciate it if you could, um, just reimburse us maybe. You see, we are not exactly high earning people, so this gift was pretty much all we had for our son.”, Michelle said with pain in her tone.
“Well, it’s no one’s fault is it? My son didn’t know what he was doing, it was his first time with this thing. And it’s just bad luck that your son left the car right in the site of the drone. It’s no one’s fault really.”
“We know it’s not our fault because we didn’t come to your house and broke anything.”, Dave,Ryan’s dad came out from the closet sounding pretty mad.”
“Look, I’m not blaming your son. But you are a dad. This was an accident but it is only fair for you to reimburse us.”
“Well, I ain’t doing that, because it’s not my fault.”,Bran’s dad sounded pretty mad too.
Michelle was patient and just looked at the two dad’s quarrelling against each other.
“Oh man. You are wasting my time. Bran, come on. Take the drone and let’s get out of here”.
They looked around.
Bran and Ryan were no where to be found in the hall.
“Brannnnn?!!, Where are you?”, his dad shouted.
“Ryannnnn?!!”, shouted Michelle.
Then they heard noises at the backyard.
Bran and Ryan were happily playing with the Drone. There was smiling, joy, screaming, shouting, and most of all, genuineness in their happy faces. But of course, that’s because they are young and are yet unexposed to selfishness.
That sight made both the parents guilty. While they were fighting over a petty thing, their kids were able to set aside the humongous differences in the lifestyle and be able to get along and enjoy the companion of each other.
This is all happiness is about. It doesn’t matter where you come from, where you belong, who your parents are. As long as you can find someone to share your day with, spread joy and smile, you are indeed gifted with a happy life.
Let’s all remember this and enjoy and be blessed in these holidays.
