It is cold and a bit dark. You wake to the sound of waves crashing against a cliff. The first rays of the sun peek through the horizon. You stand on unsteady legs, taking in the environment. Your eyes dart across the landscape, scanning to gain your bearings.
There is nothing for miles but deep blue aqua. The sea spreads out as far as your eyes can see.
You turn around and you are bewildered by what you see. A jungle lies before you. The very tall mahoganies and the beeches are so close together that they seem to block out the light.
You take in your surroundings. All around you are pieces of driftwood and torn sails, rice and sorghum litter the beach, there's debris everywhere; remnants of the _S. S. Revenge_.
You remember last night. Was it last night? You wonder.
You remember when the hurricane started. The roar of the sea, the captain's frantic effort to keep the ship afloat, the thunderous crack when the mast broke in two, the shouts of the crew as the ship's floor planks splintered.
All was muffled as the ship capsized. You'd heard someone scream. That was the last sound you heard before you descended and all was quiet.
There is no one in sight as you walk in your tattered clothes. With a crown of seaweed and one boot, you walk the beach. You hear rustling in a bush nearby. You whip around in time to see what looked like a man charge at you. It ran with a slight stoop and the gait of a chimpanzee. The hirsute being is upon you even before your brain can process what the abomination is.
You look on, transfixed. It pauses in front of you. Its eyes open wide, probably recognizing the similarities you both share. It sniffs. Walking around you. Probing your hair, your ears, touching your hand. You look at the creature's face. It would have been a man's save for the wide nostrils and bushy hairs on the face.
"Druukraa," it says.
The sound seems guttural.
"Druukraa!", now with more vigour.
It grabs your arm and drags you along. You have no strength left to fight so you just follow. As it drags you, you say a silent prayer,
"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.... "
