Skull was standing on a bridge in City Park looking at the water with a sad look on his face. Kyndal Moore was jogging in the park and saw skull. She decided to stop and find out what was bothering him. ‘’I hate to say this but you look like you just lost your best friend,’’ said Kyndal trying to start a conversation with Skull. ‘’Me and Bones grew up together, hung out together, ate lunch together, and stuffed nerds into their locker. Now that Bones has got together with Jessica, we no longer hang out or do the cool stuff we use to do,’’ said Skull with a sigh. ‘’Don’t worry you will start meeting people and one day have a new best friend,’’ said Kyndal looking at the water with Skull. ‘’If you don’t mind asking; how is everything going between you and Alex?’’ asked Skull. “We broke up,’’ said Kyndal. ‘’I am sorry. Do you mind telling me what happened?’’ asked Skull. ‘’He was moving way too fast and I think rather than a relationship, he was only interested in getting in my pants,’’ said Kyndal. ‘’That pig! I would like to stuff him in his locker! You don’t treat a girl like that. You take them out on dates, go to the movies, and cuddle them when they don’t feel good or upset,’’ said Skull. ‘’That’s very sweet,’’ said Kyndal with a shocked look on her face. Skull started to put his arm around Kyndal but stopped. ‘’I am sorry,’’ said Skull turning around. ‘’It’s okay. I am just trying to figure out why you and Bones act the way you do but yet somehow you both know how a girl wants to be treated,’’ said Kyndal. ‘’When me and Bones were growing up we lived on the same street. Then both our parents divorced and we ended up on what is known as the dark side of town. You had to be tough or at least pretend you were,’’said Skull. ‘’I see you played like you were tough and probably scared someone from that side of town would see you, so you kept the act going all the way up to High School,’’ said Kyndal. Skull shook his head yes. ‘’Can I ask you a personal question and no one else will know?’’ asked Kyndal. ‘’Ok,’’ said Skull. ‘’What is your real name? I have always known you as Skull, said Kyndal. ‘’Venton Lawrence. I know it is a stupid name,’’ said Skull. ‘’It’s not a stupid name. It is unique, like your personality,’’ said Kyndal. ‘’No one has ever said that before,’’ said Skull. ‘’Are you going to be here a little bit longer?’’ asked Kyndal. ‘’Probably,’’ said Skull. ‘’I will be right back,’’ said Kyndal.
Kyndal carrying a brown paper bag returned to the bridge where Skull was still standing. ‘’I brought us something,’’ said Kyndal opening the brown paper bag. She took out a hot dog and handed it to Skull then she took another one out for herself. ‘’Something wrong?’’ asked Kyndal as she saw Skull looking at her with a shocked look on his face. ‘’No,’’ said Skull as he started eating. Kyndal and Skull ate and spent a couple of hours talking.
Jim Miller was sitting at Maurice Miller’s dinner table fixing to open a can of beer. His great-great-great granddaughter Rilee Bridges walked in. "I was just fixing to have my mid afternoon snack," said Jim. "I will have one with you," said Rilee sitting her backpack on the floor. She went to the refrigerator and took out a Dr. Pepper.
"I was reading in the newspaper that there was a record size catfish spotted in Lake Province in Suzette. I would have loved to have had the opportunity to try and catch that beast," said Jim with a sigh. "granddaddy, do you know what I would love to do Saturday," said Rilee with a smile on her face. "What?" asked Jim. "I would love to go fishing with my granddaddy," said Rilee. "If that is what my beautiful granddaughter wants to do we will do it," said Jim. "I wish my boyfriend could come too if he hadn't already made plans. I would love for you to meet him," said Rilee. "What do I care. The more the merrier," said Jim. "Oh! Granddaddy you are the greatest," said Rilee with excitement as she put her arms around Jim.
JJ and her classmate Bridgett Ainsworth were putting books in their locker at Dockside High. ‘’Hi girls,’’ said Skull walking by with a different hair style and attire. ‘’Skull,’’ said JJ with a puzzled look on her face. ‘’Please call me Venton,’’ said Skull. JJ and Bridgett looked at each other with a confused look on their face.
Al Minkus, a boy genius was finishing putting his books into his locker. He saw Skull coming and began trembling with fear. ‘’Hi Minkus,’’ said Skull walking by Al. JJ and Bridgett walked up to where Al was standing ‘’What just happened?’’ asked JJ. ‘’I don’t know, maybe some paranormal event. Let’s ask boy genius over here,’’ said Bridgett trying to be a smart elic. ‘’The only logical explanation I can think of is he made a new best friend,’’ said Al. The three stood there trying to figure out the change in Skull’s action.
JJ climbed in her boyfriend Jason’s bedroom window as he was getting ready for bed. ‘’This has been one weird day,’’ said JJ taking her shoes and socks off. ‘’What happened?’’ asked Jason. ‘’Skull said hi to me, Bridgett, and Minkus. If that wasn’t weird enough, he wanted to be called Venton instead of Skull,’’ said JJ. ‘’It’s fixing to get even weirder,’’ said Jason. ‘’Ok, but I don’t see how?;; said JJ. ‘’Skull and Kyndal had lunch together,`` said Jason. “What! I stand corrected,’’ said JJ as she pulled the covers up. ‘’Maybe Skull and Kyndal are getting together,`` said Jason. ‘’That would be strange, but who would have ever thought Bones and Jessica would be a couple,’’ said JJ.
Jim woke up at five o’clock in the morning and saw the light on in the kitchen. He thought he had forgotten to turn the light before he went to bed after he had a late night snack. ‘’Hi granddaddy breakfast is just about ready,’’ said Rilee when he walked into the kitchen. He sat down at the table and Rilee brought over a plate of bacon and a cup of coffee. ‘’I talked to Richard and he is going to be coming with us. He loves to fish and likes to get started real early,’’ said Rilee telling a little fib about what she had planned. ‘’What time does he like to start?’’ ask Jim. ‘’Oh, around six thirty, seven o’clock,’’ said Rilee.
Rilee pulled up to the Waters house. ‘’I will be right back,’’ said Rilee with a smile on her face. She went in and came back out a few minutes later with her boyfriend Richard and his fishing gear. Jim was sound asleep in the front seat.
After a six hour drive to Suzette, Rilee pulled into Momma’s Place Restaurant. Rilee turned to her boyfriend Richard sitting in the back seat. ‘’Granddaddy, needs to eat before we go fishing. This is the only place I could find online that had something with bacon on the menu. Granddaddy eats more bacon than anyone I know,’’ said Rilee turning around noticing Jim still sleeping. ‘’Granddaddy, it’s time to get up,’’ said Rilee tapping Jim on the shoulder. ‘’Where are we?’’ asked Jim waking up. ‘’We are in Suzette,’’ said Rilee. ‘’What are we doing here?’’ asked Jim. ‘’We are going to eat lunch and then we are going to try and catch that record catfish,’’ said Rilee with a smile on her face.
Rilee and Jim returned to Maurice Miller’s house late Saturday evening with a cooler full of fish. ‘’Sorry we didn’t get to see or catch that big fish,’’ said Rilee as they walked through the front door. ‘’It’s not about catching monster catfish or fishing at all. It’s about spending time with my beautiful granddaughter,’’ said Jim.
Mable was cleaning the kitchen when Jim and Rilee walked in. ‘’I am going to take a nap before time for my midnight snack,’’ said Jim walking out of the kitchen. ‘’Anything I can to do to help?’’ asked Rilee. ‘’You already have,’’ said Mable. ‘’What do you mean?’’ asked Rilee sitting down at the dinner table. ‘’Honey, before you came here all he would do is nap, eat bacon, and drink coffee. Now, that you are here he is getting out of the house and enjoying what he used to do before Corene died,’’said Mable. ‘’He maybe be ninety-four but Ienjoy spending time with granddaddy. The only thing,’’ said Rilee pausing with tears rolling down her cheek. ‘’The only thing,’’ said Rilee again pausing to wipe her eyes. ‘’Sweetheart what is wrong?’’ asked Mable putting her arms around Rilee. ‘’He won’t be here too much longer, and not ready for another funeral,’’ said Rilee crying ‘’Oh, honey don’t think that,’’ said Mable putting her arm around Rilee. ‘’ I can’t help it! I lost my nanna, mom, and dad a few weeks apart,’’ said Rilee crying. Mable consoled Rilee as she cried at the dinner table.
