I was a soldier amongst others just like me fighting in a brutal battle, the Battle of Stalingrad. We were expendable, we were not special, we had nothing to throw at them except guns, tanks and blood. Stalin didn’t want us to lose the city named after him and Hitler wanted the city to fall. The fighting was from building to building and we had to fight because we were drafted and I didn’t want to fight, but I had to if I wanted to see my family again. I had to fight fiercely if I wanted to live and so I did, I threw grenades, I gunned down everyone I saw and I even faced down Panzers moving at full speed with anti-tank guns, yet I became a corpse surrounded by many others, unrembered and replaced.
