Luke stumbled down the stairs as he wished he could have stayed in bed. It’s his birthday, but it feels like almost everyone forgot. His mom always makes him breakfast in bed for his birthday, no breakfast today. Luke held onto a little bit of hope as he walked into the kitchen and hoped to see that there were presents waiting for him on the counter. No gifts, only the family cat who was creepily staring at him. “Mr. Puds, what are we gonna do? Everyone forgot about my birthday.” Luke vented to the cat as Mr. Puds started purring. Luke was so lost in a trance and disappointment that the doorbell chime scared him. “Maybe it's a present for me they had delivered.” Luke thought as he excitedly walked to the front door and opened it a crack. “Luke Farsi?” A man asked as he held a clipboard up to his face to read Luke’s name. “Yes, that's me.” Luke said as he suspiciously opened the door some more. “We have your Bentley that was being dropped off today. We just need a signature.” The man said as he scribbled on the piece of paper and handed it to Luke to sign. “A Bentley? As in a Bentley car?” Luke shockingly gasped as he pushed the delivery guy aside to see a brand new Bentley in the driveway. “It must be returned tomorrow by 10 a.m.” The driver said as he tossed the keys to Luke and got back in his van and drove off. Luke couldn’t believe his eyes, he teared up at the thought that his parents would get him a nice car to ride around in for his birthday. Luke excitedly ran back inside the house to see his dad tying his tie in the mirror. “Thank you, dad! Thank you!” Luke yelled as he barrelled into his dad and hugged him. “Woah! What's this all about?” His dad asked as he tried unsuccessfully to pull Luke off him. “You got me a car for the day?” Luke asked as his dad stood there shocked and then he let out a sigh as he began remembering. “Now why would we do that? It's not like it's your birthday or anything. It's a rental car for work I have a few meetings to go to. Can I have the keys?” his dad asked as he held out his hand and Luke somberly put the keys into his father’s hand. “Thank you. I will be back tonight sometime.” His dad said as he opened the front door and unlocked the Bentley. Luke walked back into the kitchen to where Mr. Puds was now laying on the bread box instead of the counter. “What am I gonna do Mr. Puds? Everyone forgot about my birthday.” Luke said as he could feel himself on the verge of tears. Mr. Puds purred back as Luke slowly petted him and then walked away. “Well, I guess I am making my own birthday breakfast.” Luke thought as he took out a bowl of cereal and some milk and pulled out a barstool to sit on. “Hi, honey.” His mom said as she emerged from around the corner of the kitchen wall. “Hi, Mom. Can you drown in milk?” Luke sighed as he spooned some cereal into his mouth. His mom paused for a second and glanced him up and down. “Yes you can, but I don't suggest doing it. Is everything ok?” His mom asked as she came over and touched Luke’s cheeks. “I'm not sick, just annoyed. I have to get to school.” Luke said as he hopped off the barstool and put his bowl in the sink. “Have a good day I will see you at 3.” His mom said as Luke slowly picked up his backpack and headed out the front door. He quietly walked outside and was immediately welcomed by the warm spring air that made him wish it was summer already so he could be on summer vacation. Luke slowly began his trek down the long driveway to his car. “It’s no Bentley.” He thought as he got into his small, beat-up car. He started the car just as his phone rang. It was Penny, she must have remembered his birthday, they were best friends after all. “Hey bestie, can you pick me up? My 8 a.m. got moved to 10 a.m.” Penny asked as Luke looked at the clock that read 8:45. “Yeah, that shouldn’t be a problem, I will be there in 5.” Luke said as he hung up the phone and drove away from the curb. The 5 minutes flew by for Luke but that’s only because he didn't want to be late for class. Sure enough, Penny was outside her house and was waiting by the end of the driveway just like she said she would be. “Hey, Luke!” She said as she opened the passenger side door and hopped inside the car. “Hey, Penny.” Luke said back as he pulled away from the curb and disappeared down the street. “Does she not remember?” Luke thought as he was waiting for Penny to say happy birthday. “How is your-” Penny started to say but was cut off by her phone ringing. “Happy Birthday!” Penny squealed into the phone. “She doesn't remember. No one remembers.” Luke said as he tried to ignore Penny talking about birthday plans with one of her friends and tried to focus on the road. “Hey, do you mind if we pull into that restaurant quickly? We have some time before class and I want something to eat.” Penny said as she put down her phone and Luke pulled into the restaurant’s parking lot. They both got out and Luke locked his car that he was still imagining was the Bentley. Penny opened the door and they walked into the waiting room. “Surprise!” his family yelled as they all popped up from behind the tables. “Happy Birthday sweetie!” Luke’s mom yelled as his whole family rushed towards him and trapped Luke in a bear hug. “Can we give him his surprise?” His dad begged his mom. She rolled her eyes and nodded her head in agreement as his dad excitedly grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the restaurant. “The Bentley is yours, there were no business meetings.” His dad said as he winked at Luke and tossed him the keys. Luke excitedly snatched the keys in mid-air and unlocked the car. “It's all yours for the day, happy birthday buddy. Now go take it for a ride,” His dad said as Luke stepped into the Bentley and started it. Luke slowly backed the car out of its parking spot with tears in his eyes for how thankful he was to his parents. He still didn't feel right though and pulled the car back into the parking spot. “I will drive it later, you guys are more important right now. Material objects don't make a birthday, family does. Now let's go have my birthday breakfast.” Luke said as he put his arms around his parents and they all went back inside to celebrate his birthday together.
