Skyler was talking with Heather…so I waited.
I am Fall, so why the Rainbow Maker wants to meet with me…I have no idea. Her and Spring were talking - Spring is use to interruptions, Winter is always sneaking in a few days during her watch. Summer likes to chirp in a day or two too.
Spring takes it with a smile, after all, she is the first breath of life in months and we all sort of admire her. But Sky rules us all. When she calls, we come.
*****
“Autumn (my formal name- and not a good sign) I need your help.”
“Sure. For what?”
You may have noticed that the Mortals on Earth are having a tough time. (I nodded) Their spirits are starting to sag, and Nature called me and said this is an Opportunity we cannot waste.”
“What does it have to do with us? Most of the Mortals ignore us to stare at their screens, stay indoors, and pretend they can’t do anything about plastic, pollution, or the planet.”
This time is was Sky that nodded.
“That was then. THIS is now. Something has happened. They have cleaned up their air a bit. The water is a bit cleaner. They are starting to appreciate being outdoors, even for a little bit. Earth tells me that he has felt more of their feet on his grass, dirt and sand, without hurry by the way- then he has felt in eons.
I am Sky…and I can tell you that many more of them are looking up and asking if I am bluer, crisper, cleaner than before. I am. And Oceania tells me she is getting some rest from engine oil, black water, gray water, and trash.
Beauty, it seems, is gaining a foothold among the mortals. We want to give more of it to them. Both for their sakes…and ours.
Will you help?”
Well, when Sky asks for help…you don’t say: “No.”
“How can I help? I am Fall…my season is months away in the North, and has been over in the South for weeks.”
Skyler smiled back at Autumn.
“As you know, I am pretty doggone good with bold colors.”
Heather and I chuckled. The Sky can blind you with color if she so chooses.
“What I am not good at is subtle colors that blend with bright colors. The closest I can come is with my Rainbows.
“But those are so pretty!”
I couldn’t help but blurt that out. I have seen some rainbows that the Rainbow Maker made that mortal Artists would kill to be able to paint. I have seen some of her rainbows bridge the gap between old and young, as they hold hands and smile at the sky. And love…well rainbows mean love in almost every mortal culture.
The Rainbow Maker smiled at my honest outburst. And her smile was a rainbow of a different kind.
“Thank you. What I need now is a different sort of rainbow. One that isn’t as fuzzy as mine. I need a rainbow that will sparkle like the sky is now: clear, clean, crisp. I want it to lift the spirits of the mortals. AND (her voice took on that tone that brooks no argument) I want to hit some psychological buttons in the mortals. They are starting to see the beauty of their planet…and of each other.
I want to encourage that. Will you help me?
“Help? Of course. Oh my gosh. What kind of Rainbow can we come up with. Wait…can I use my colors, or just your standard blends?”
“Standard? You mean boring?”
One eyebrow went up on the Rainbow Maker…Heather was stifling a laugh.
I blushed. Believe me when I tell you that when FALL blushes, mortals would cry at the blending of colors. The beauty would overwhelm them.
To my surprise the Rainbow Maker squealed…so did Spring.
She pointed at me to hold that color on me.
“That’s it! That is exactly what I want in my Rainbows. Those colors make you feel embarrassed that you didn’t take better care of the sky, water, and land. It is a truly heart wrenching combination.
If we blend that with my Hope and Dream Rainbows…we can show them a way out.“
I kept the colors. She worked up a rainbow.
Spring helped hang it in the sky. Winter lent some snowflake sparkles…not too much…just a touch.
We all leaned back to watch it grow.
******
The Mortals noticed it. First the mortal creatures of the water and land…the ones the Humans have named: Animals. Which really is kind of silly…since Humans are Animals too. They just don’t believe it.
Then the insects, bugs, and reptiles. Most understand color way more than the other Mortals…and they loved it.
Finally, the other Mortals looked up often enough, and long enough to start noticing on their one hour walks outside.
“Mommy, look at that rainbow! It is different than the ones I remember when I was a little kid.”
Mrs Wilson smiled down at her daughter. Her heart filled with joy… her daughter was all of six years old. A Mother’s little heart flop happened when she heard how grown up her daughter thought she was…at six.
Only then, with an already primed heart, did Mrs. Wilson look up at the sky.
Her breath caught in her throat.
That wasn’t like any rainbow she had seen in her youth either. She just stared and held her daughters hand. Later she would call her Mom.
“Mom…did you see that rainbow earlier today? Do you remember them looking like that when you were young?”
Her Mother gave a soft chuckle. One that carried almost eight decades of memories.
“No honey. They didn’t look like that when I was a kid. I am pretty sure they didn’t look like that for my Dad or Grandfather either.”
“Well, what do you think made it look like that? Cleaner air, no pollution, no acid rain drops?”
Her mother thought for a few seconds.
“Oh, darling, I am sure those things contribute to these new rainbows. But I think, and I know this sound silly…but…”
“Go on Mom, you know I don’t think any of your thoughts are silly. I know how wise you are.“
Mrs. Wilson’s Mom’s heart did a little squiggle that only a Mother’s heart can do when a child tells them how important they are, or compliments them in some way.
“Well, Honey, I think the sky and planet are just reminding us of how pretty the Earth really is…and if we are careful and kind to it, we will see more of these new Rainbows.”
She expected her daughter to laugh. She did not. Instead…
“Mom, I think you are right. Something tells me you are. I will have to think about this more.”
“OKay, honey, but don’t stop looking at the rainbows while you search for answers.”
“I love you, Mom.
“I know.”
Just then another Rainbow broke out in the sky…
“Do you see that?”
“Yes.”
Tears ran down the eyes of both Mrs. Wilson and her Mother. What a rainbow.
Up in Sky’s room, tears fell from Autumn, Heather, and Skyler…Winter’s froze, but still fell to sparkle in the puddle of color falling down to form yet another rainbow.
The Rainbow Maker sang out to them all:
“This is going to work!"

04/22/2020Aloha Linda,
My best friend just showed me pictures of the "air" in major cities around the world. The left hand side was taken on March 1st , the right hand side was as the air looks on April 15th. And boy oh boy what a difference. So maybe we will get the hint!
Thanks for the kind words.

04/17/2020Wow! What a lovely reminder of how beautiful this earth and sky can truly be when we can see it with clear eyes, free from pollution. I wish we human beings would take better care of the earth, and did not need a 'stay at home' order to be awakened to how destructive our every day lives can be when we are oblivious to the harm we can cause by doing nothing and being apathetic and complacent. If anything good comes out of this virus, I hope taking better care of the environment for the benefit of ourselves and future generations will be one of those good things. Thank you for sharing this beautiful and thought provoking 'fantasy' story with us, Kevin! :-)

04/18/2020Wow! Thanks again for the StoryStar of the Day Award. It means a lot to an old guy like me. And it isn't our imagination anymore. Data has shown that the air is cleaner (world wide!), the canals in Venice actually have fish and dolphins in them now...and the water is clear enough to see them frolic.
Where I live, the turtles are nesting all over the empty beaches and the bears have taken over the parks in the mountains. Nature isn't taking as long as us to recover. Alongside all of this, more and more Youtubers are showing videos of just sunsets, running water, swans floating...some with just ambient sound, others with painfully beautiful piano or cello music playing.
It turns out, we do love Nature and admire her beauty. Now, it is like you said- time for us to care!
Smiles, Kevin
