THE LAND OF BLUE
HIYA THERE !!
HIYA THERE !! I am James Walters and today I am going to tell you a story. An adventure I had, actually. It takes place on a strange day, in a strange place, with strange creatures and for a strange purpose.......
THE STRANGE FEELING
One fine, spring day I woke up. I was supposed to be super excited that day, since I was going to spend the whole day with my friends, riding ear-shrieking roller coasters, to eating in Copper Chimney, the best Italian restaurant in the city, but, for some reason, I felt like this wasn't the day to be with friends, I wanted to be alone today, like not wanting to travel with the flock of birds, but flying your own way. This instinct was just bewildering . I looked up at the sky, thinking that my instinct meant that it would rain. The sky was a clear, forget-me-not blue and there was no way it was going to rain. I felt like I should go somewhere quiet and peaceful . A place where no one, not even the chirping of birds would bother me. And in an instant it came to me; The beach. I knew it would be empty, I could not explain, but I just knew.
THE 'PEACEFUL' DAY
I had reached my destination, it was empty, there was nothing there but a scarecrow. ''That could come in handy for scaring the birds away'' I thought, satisfied. I stared hungrily at the beautiful lotuses and the breathtaking waterfall. There was nothing strange here, and I knew that this day would be nothing but peaceful. How very wrong I was.
I sat on the beach couch, gazing at the beautiful sea while drinking coconut juice. I was enjoying myself, because I now had the place which was usually crowded with so many people, all to myself.
I was grinning at the thought of my friends sitting in those roller coasters, which seats were probably burning, because it was so hot.
My eyes began to droop, and I was ready to drift off in a peaceful dream.......... until....
''Hurry up'' said a screechy, unfamiliar voice. I was scared out of my wits, but I kept my eyes closed. ''W-w-wh-who's there ?'' I stammered. ''Why, it's Mr. Scarecrow of course, and didn't I say hurry up?'' said the voice again. I opened my eyes and my jaw dropped, the scarecrow which was standing on the sand was bending over me, frowning. ''Well, come on then'' said the scarecrow, and without another word it took my hand and pulled me all the way to the sea. It then gave me some supplies for scuba-diving. ''Insane, the way you humans need protection before going underwater'' he said shaking his head.
He plunged me headfirst into the water. Then he jumped in himself. For about ten minutes which seemed like a lifetime to me, we swam. I saw beautiful plants and creatures which I had never seen before. I even thought I saw a whale ! I just love water. If I had a choice, I would have studied them a little closer, but I kept on following the scarecrow. It would not do to get lost in the sea. We reached a cave [which looked more like a house] and we entered it. All around the cave there were scarecrows just like the one who had brought me here. Some were brown in colour and looked totally normal and some were pink and had accessories on their heads. They were all surrounding a woman who looked like the leader. And then she spoke ''Welcome James, to The Land Of Blue once again''.
THE LAND OF BLUE
The voice was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. It was sweeter than the chirping of birds and I was so beautified that I didn't notice that I had no idea what she was talking about. The woman turned around, and I stifled a gasp. The woman was a mermaid! She was even more beautiful than her voice and that was saying something. Her hair was a mix of pink and purple he was wearing an exquisite diadem. Perhaps, sitting on the rock had hid her tail, because the tail was easily the most noticeable thing. It had the colours Red, Orange , Yellow, Green and Purple. But as I looked around I felt that there was something missing over here, something which was necessary for the place to thrive, something like a cricket match without a umpire. I looked back at the mermaid and her smile faltered, and was replaced by a frown. ''Who are you ?'' she asked. ''Oh your majesty, I am James Walters'' I replied, bowing. ''But-but I said that you were supposed to bring a James Walter !'' cried the mermaid, indignantly. She looked very worried, so I said ''Um your majesty, I would be glad to do what this- this James Walter was supposed to do.'' Her face relaxed into a smile once again. ''Well, I suppose you can help us then ,'' she said, eyeing me with interest. ''Come inside, and make yourself warm,'' she said .''
She led me inside the cave-house thing and I looked around, amazed. It was like a normal house, but you would never see any objects like this in a house. Instead of a table and chairs, there was a big rock, and smaller rocks around it . there was also a bed which merely looked like two rocks covered by a mermaid tail blanket. The wall was pink and white. The floor was covered in mermaid tail blankets too, which gave the it a surprising softness. The wardrobe was filled not with clothes but with diadems, necklaces and other accessories. Though we were still underwater, I felt a sudden warmth.'' Sit down,'' said the mermaid indicating a rock. She gave me a plate with something white. ''Tuck in,'' she said kindly. When I ate it, it was like all the bewilderment, all the worries floated away and were replaced by a blissful feeling. It was the sweetest thing in the world, even sweeter than the scent of roses, even sweeter than the sweetest strawberry there could be. But the moment I bit it, for the second time in the day I felt something strange, something I could not explain.
''Your majesty- ''Oh, please call me Crystal.'' the mermaid cut in .''Okay Crystal , thank you for this sweet, but what is it, why this ?'' I asked curiously. ''The moment you bite this sweet ,you will make an oath , however, unknowingly, with your heart, to never betray the secrets of this land . And if you do tell anyone, you die.'' she explained. '' Enough talk, now let me tell you the real reason I have bought you here '' she said .''I am going to tell you a story about a land called the Land Of Blue,.'' she said.'' The Land Of Blue ?'' I thought, confused. If there was one thing which I hadn't seen in the sea, it was the colour blue. True, the water was blue, but other than that, there was not a shade of blue. '' I know what you are thinking,'' said Crystal looking sad. '' Why my kingdom has no shade of blue, though the name is that and that is why I am going to tell you this story.''
THE STORY OF THE LAND OF BLUE
''My great-great-great-great grandfather, King Lucas built The Land Of Blue. He named it this because we believe that the colour blue stands for luck, friendship ,generosity and nobility. He then concealed the power in an oyster's pearl, which lies in the heart of the ocean. This pearl is extremely powerful, but if fallen in the wrong hands, can be very dangerous and can destroy the world. There are four stages. The first stage is that the colour blue will disappear from the sea. The second stage is that all the mermaids and mermen except the king or queen will turn into a scarecrows. The third stage is that the water flowing in this sea will turn black. And the fourth stage is that this sea will contaminate all the other water bodies and will destroy life on earth . And that is what has happened. An evil wizard, named Grim, has stolen the pearl, and only a human will be able to steal it back. That's why we have called you. You are the only ones who can help us.''
Crystal finished her story, looking depressed. I was staring at her, looking horrified. '' I got stuck just because of a S ,'' I thought angrily. I couldn't do this. What was I playing at, risking my life ? But, wasn't not going and finding that pearl also risking my life ?
''Alright '' I said at last. '' But what sort of creatures would I meet?'' I asked '' Oh, you will just meet some evil witches and rough water giants,'' Crystal said soothingly. I gulped. '' And will I be getting a guide or something ?'' I asked. '' No but, I hardly think you will need one. We'll give you a map and a box of disguises, though I doubt you will need them ,' I'll also pack some food, we have everything which you humans eat'' she said cheerfully. She sounded happy again, so I thought it would be safe to ask her the question which he had wanted to ask her since I had heard the story. '' Just a question, but why scarecrows ? I mean there could be some other creature or thing to turn into, right ?'' I asked, trying to keep my voice casual. '' Well it is like that because one of the things we mermaids and mermen prize knowledge. And since scarecrows have no brains'' said Crystal. '' And what sort of power is in the pearl ?'' I asked '' Actually, no one really knows because no one has opened the pearl. There are legends, though, that it contains the power of good and evil. No one really knows what it means, but it is said that if opened or fallen into the wrong hands, which I just told you, can destroy the world'' . '' And, will the curse operate only on you mermaids and mermen or on every other creature in the sea ? '' I asked. '' Only us mermaids and mermen '' Crystal told me shortly. There was an awkward silence ''Your welcome, Mr. Walters, the hope of The Land Of Blue rest on your shoulders''. she said solemnly, while giving me a map and a silver box. I could think of nothing to say now. I reached the door smiled at Crystal, hoping that this was not the last time I met someone who was a bit like a human, or as Professor Umbridge says in the famous Harry Potter series a creature of 'near human intelligence'.
THE STONES OF THE WATER
I put the disguise box on the ground and checked the map. Crystal had traced a red line and put crosses on the stops. I pocketed the map again.
And so, I set of. I didn't meet a soul. The silence of the sea terrified me. Had Crystal told everyone not to come out, that I could handle it ? I certainly hoped she hadn't, because then everyone would think that I could definitely do it.
And after swimming for what seemed like an eternity, I heard a rumbling noise. ''Giants,'' I told myself. I hid behind some rocks and looked up. The giants were about forty feet tall and I couldn't believe no one could see them from the beach. They were purplish-black in colour. They must have been blue in colour, but the spell had turned them to this colour. There was a gold mirror on the side, but other than that, there was nothing except rocks and seaweed. They seemed to be howling, groaning and grunting at the same time. They kept gabbling in some strange language and I couldn't understanding why they were doing that until one said,'' Oh no, we are going to get destroyed,'' and I understood. This was probably there way of crying and they were crying because they would get . I decided to reveal myself. ''Ahoy there,'' I shouted.
They stopped there howling -grunting-groaning- sobbing thing and looked around, searching for the source of the noise. ''Down here'' I shouted. They looked down at me and frowned'' Who are you ?'' they asked. ''Oh sirs, I am James Walters and I have come to steal the pearl from Grim,'' I said, bowing. The giants looked at me for a full minute, and then they burst out laughing. ''Hee hee hee, ha ha ha, thinks he has power which Grim doesn't have,'' said one giant. They continued to laugh, sometimes throwing snide comments. It felt like an underwater earthquake, and I was actually surprised that a tsunami hadn't occurred. After what seemed like an hour, one of the giants said '' Though silly, I think that this attempt is great. This young man is trying to help us and we should not insult or offend him.'' '' True, true, we The Stones Of The Water never do discourage anyone trying to save us,'' said a giant with a rather squeaky voice, though he fought to keep his voice straight. ''Well, young lamb, sit down and tell us your tale,'' said a giant with a deep, slow voice. Even while sitting, the giants were about thirty feet tall, and even though I remained standing, I had to crane my neck to even look at their elbow. I told them everything that had happened. I told them about the strange feeling, how I met the scarecrow and everything else that had happened. At the end of the story, a elder giant got up and started pacing round and round. '' So you have a box of disguises huh ? Might come in handy for dressing you up while passing the witches. I gulped. I had hoped that the witches were just a joke, but it was true. On the other hand, the giants had been really nice and maybe the same applied for the witches. '' So, who will you disguise as ?'' I asked, trying to keep my voice casual. '' I've got the best idea,'' said a giant, who was wearing a pink frilly sort of dress. '' We can disguise you as Crackle, Grim's younger sister.'' '' Well, we should hurry up, we don't have much time,'' said an elderly sort of giant. glancing at the sea, nervously. I knew that he was looking for signs of black water. And so, my witch makeover began.
''Well, how do I look ?'' I asked nervously, after half an hour. The giants were all wearing a nauseating expression on their faces. At last, a kindly looking giant said '' Um, well uh y-you look fantastic, just fantastic.'' I looked at myself in Gold mirror and gagged. A grubby, old witch looked back at me. I was wearing black robes with purple stars on them. I was also wearing some fake teeth. My skin was all grubby and I was holding a wand and broomstick. If I had not known that it was me standing there, I would have wondering who I was looking at. There was a long silence, '' Well'', I said at last, ''Thanks for everything''. The female giants burst into tears, and another giant patted me on the back. [ I actually felt like I sank in the ocean bed further. ''We packed some food for you n your box '', said the giant with a squeaky voice I thanked them for the food too, because tr food Crystal had given me was running out. And then, I bid farewell to them and left The Stones Of The Water.
THE BLACK WITCHES
It was very strange. Though the giants had told me that the journey to the witches would be four to five days long, it seemed like the time was slipping away. Those five days only seemed like one. And, then, I heard a strange noise. It sounded like a choir, but something much, much worse. I went forward and I saw them. The witches. There were about fifty black robed, gruesome witches in front of me. I was facing their back and they were surrounding a woman, just like the scarecrows had surrounded Crystal. The witch in the middle was holding a seahorse. She cut up the sea horse and threw it into a cauldron. She did that for several more animals. I watched, horrified as she stirred the cauldron. I passed the witches as quietly as I could, because the giants had told me not to linger if I could help it. Unfortunately, one of the witches spotted me. '' Crackle, what a pleasant surprise !'' cried the witch. '' Keller has made some animal stew, come join us for dinner, isn't it your favourite ?'' I couldn't make head or tail of this statement. Animal stew ? Keller ? '' Who are you and who is Keller ?'' I asked in my most cold and intimidating voice. The witch's smile faltered. '' You know me, '' she said, '' I am Griselda, and Keller is the witches queen isn't she ?'' ''Oh of course, she's the queen. Sorry, my memory isn't as good as it once was,'' I said, hastily covering up my mistake. ''Ok, great. So, will you stay, we still have to give you the penknife you forgot last time '' said the witch earnestly. '' Oh no, Griselda, I'm just passing today,'' I said, praying that the witch would agree. '' Are you alright ?'' asked the witch eying me with suspicion,'' You never miss a chance to eat our stew.'' '' Actually, I was going to visit Grim,'' I said. I was pleased to see that the look of suspicion had turned into a look of fright. '' Grim ? Oh alright then.'' I was happy that I had overcame another one of the obstacles until someone yelled '' Crackle !'' I spun around and lost my balance. '' Oh Crackle, it's so good to see you !'' said the queen. ''Oh, you absolutely have to stay here, we are having your favourite , animal stew'', said the queen. ''Oh yes, I heard'', I said. '''But unfortunately, today I have to visit Grim, I need to have a word with him about stealing the pearl he and destroying the earth.'' '' Yes, yes but anyway, doesn't matter you have to stay here,'' said the queen. ''But, but'' I begin. The queen waved me of. ''It is on my account that you will stay ,'' said the queen, with hint of danger in her voice. '' Oh, alright your majesty'' I said, ''But only for today alright ?'' I said in an equally dangerous voice. The queen didn't reply, but looked at me blankly. '' Are you sure you 're alright Crackle ?'' asked the queen nervously. She looked almost frightened. ''Of course I am alright,'' I said, trying to make it sound like this question was insulting. '' Why do you say so ?'' I asked eying her with suspicion. '' Well, it's just, that, um, I mean you are calling me your majesty, and um, you 're like trying to stop us from spending time, and all, you know all that and aren't we best friends ?'' she asked. '' Oh'' I said '' Well I am really sorry, my mistake and would really love to spend the day with you,'' I said, trying to sound very sorry about everything. '' Alright, it's fine, just-jut never call me 'your majesty', didn't we agree on Keller ?'' said Keller. '' Of course Keller,'' I said hastily.
I spent the next two hours, gliding through the water, while Keller told me all her tales. She told me everything. From her hunting adventures to her best animal stew award, she described every single detail. She didn't even let me the stupid animal stew, which was the actual reason I was staying. It was a teensy bit interesting, but after sometime I began to lose interest. After the two hours of her stories she asked me '' You'll be staying overnight right ?'' '' Alright,'' I agreed. ''Where are we sleeping anyway ? It's been so long since I came here, I've forgotten everything,'' I added, so that Keller wouldn't be suspicious. '' Okay, yeah, I'll show it to you. After sometime, she pointed something out to me. I looked in the direction and I my mouth fell open. There, on my right stood a castle. Everything was black. It looked like it had been made up of black ice sculptures. There was a garden, but everything was black there too, even the grass. The only exception was a fountain, which was deep, blood red.[ And I supposed it was really blood.] The castle actually looked like a cosy place, but the black colour gave the castle a haunted, dead look. There was a banner hung on the very top of the castle saying ' The Castle Of Black. The background was black, and the words looked like they were painted with a yellow colour. '' Well, we should have our dinner now,'' said Keller. I nodded and we walked back to the castle.
I racked my brains about how I could escape from the witches over dinner. I barely ate anything at dinner, mainly because that was not the right appetite for me. We were having our dinner in a candle-lit room, and the walls were covered with the same design on the witch's robes. In the centre of the room, a picture of a sly looking wizard who was also wearing the same robes. Right in front of the picture stood a black throne. Keller took that seat. In the middle of the table stood a purple vase with black roses. In the middle of the vase, they had inscribed a black rose and a wand. All of the witches seated themselves around Keller. Keller gestured the seat on her left. If any of the witches asked why I had taken only a few bites of my animal stew or why I hadn't touched my slice of blood cake , I just said that I was not feeling starving '' I am feeling sleepy '', I said. '' Well, alright. Griselda show Crackle to her room. I daresay that you forgot where that is to ?'' asked Keller with an amused expression. I nodded. Griselda got up and took me through several long staircases, not saying a word to me. She pointed to my room and left. She didn't even say goodnight to me ! How rude ! I took of my disguise and put it in the box. I then looked around at the room.
It was also designed like the dining room. There was the same picture that had been hung on wall of the dining room. But unlike the dining room, this room was not very tidy. There were cobwebs here and there, and the grey bed sheet was extremely dusty. There were moth-eaten curtains around the bed, and there was a eerie glow coming from around the room, even though all the candles were extinguished. The place where we had eaten, looked extremely cared for which this room conspicuously lacked. I had the strangest feeling that my every move was being watched. But I had no choice but to put my plan into action, or it would mean a day without food, because the food the giants had given me was also finished. I yanked the blanket over my whole body, so that if anyone would come in, they would not see me. The bed was so soft, that if I had not been so determined to escape, I would have fallen asleep. I waited for a hour and a half and all the noise subsided from outside, which could only mean, everyone had gone to sleep.
I got of my bed and crept own the corridor. There was not a light in the corridors and the silence was a little scary, but I kept on going. I myself didn't know how I had managed to locate the main gate, but it seemed like hours and hours before I reached there. I tiptoed to the gate, but before I could open it, I ran into to something fat. '' Aaaaaaaaargh'' I shouted, not troubling to keep my voice down. '' Who's there ?'' asked a suspicious voice. I tried to keep as quiet as possible, but it was no good. The witch waved around her candle, and spotted me. For a moment, I thought that she was frozen with shock but then opening her eyes wide she shouted '' Your Majesty, there is a human in the castle. I ran for my life, or should I say, I swam for my life. There was a huge commotion behind me. I took a chance and looked behind. All the witches were swimming behind me, but most of them were wearing dressing gowns, so they were slipping. why hadn't I thought of this ? Wouldn't there be someone guarding the castle at night ? ''Get back'' I yelled. I was surprised, but most of them recoiled. Not Keller though. She was wearing her usual robes, and had a burning look of hatred in her eyes. She pulled out her wand and started shooting curses in my direction. I leapt aside whenever she shot a curse and pulled out my own wand. There was only one spell I knew. Keller had thought it to me while she had been talking to me earlier. It was the spell that lit a candle. I expected it to burn a hole in her robes, my hopes were not high but instead, a huge ball of fire erupted out of my wand, and glided it's way to Keller. I watched, surprised a candle was fine, but how could a ball of fire stay alive inside the water ? But before pondering on this thought, I glided my way out of Keller's reach. I thought of this. It was logically impossible. But then , surely, if I thought of all this, everything around me was logically impossible. The Land Of Blue, underwater giants, mermaids, witches.. no one would believe me if I told them about this. Maybe this was impossible logically, not magically.
THE FINAL DETOUR
I felt slightly cheerful while travelling to the wizard. This was my final detour and after this I would be back at the beach. I didn't even need to encounter the lack of food, because the sea itself provided food when I needed it . I supposed that this was the magic of the sea. I sometimes became scared, fearing that I might be too late, but the sea remained blue. I was also frequently checking the map. And finally, I reached the place. I knew I had reached, because there was a huge sign that blocked my way saying ' Grim's surroundings, enter if you dare' I entered, feeling terrified once again. I had no choice, but to enter like this, because I had left my disguise box [ though deliberately ] at the witches castle. It was actually a beautiful sight. There were dark blue sculptures all around, and in the middle, lay a huge dark blue glass cabinet, which held the pearl. For some reason, the pearl looked vaguely familiar. Though beautiful, the dark blue colour gave the place a sinister look. I stretched out my hand to grasp the pearl, but when my hand was inches away from the pearl, a voice called out '' Not so fast.''
I looked around so fast that I cricked my neck. Massaging it, I saw who was in front of me. i could see instantly, that the name matched the personality. The wizard had a long beard and wore dark blue robes. His face wore a grim look.
''I thought you would come'', he said, sounding a little amused. I didn't answer. I was thinking fast. The wizard was standing right in front of the pearl. ''Give me the pearl'' i said, surprised myself that my voice was so calm. ''Oh well, not so fast'' he said again. 'Let's play a little game. I am going to attack you and you will attempt to defend yourself, though I hardly think you need to. The only spell you know is that candle lighting one and it was a miracle that you used it to kill Keller.'' ''Oh yes, I've heard everything that had happened and it wouldn't happen again. You can pull out your wand and point it on anything and it will just burn a hole for proof.'' I did it and Grim was right , it just burned a hole through ice sculpture. '' Well, why are you doing this ? What's worth killing millions of people ?'' '' Well, young man, because I don't care. There is a world outside this planet. A world with wizards like me. And the only way I can live with them again is to destroy this planet.'' '' Alright but you want to destroy this world, to just go back and live with a couple of brainless wizards ?'' I asked. ''ENOUGH ! '' screamed Grim '' Enough! You will not insult my land.'' And then with a slash of his wand, he made a jet of water erupt from his wand and I was forced to leap sideways. ''Goodbye Walters,'' said Grim slyly. And then, suddenly there was such a rage in me , that without knowing the incantation, I shot a jet of water myself and Grim, who had not been expecting this, got a full blast of it. I leapt to the glass cabinet and snatched the pearl from there. Now I realised where I had seen the pearl. It was my own lucky charm. And the moment I had touched the pearl , I was thrown backwards and a scream filled me ears . There was pain beyond pain and then, everything was still and silent.
THE STRANGE FEELING
I woke up abruptly. The sunlight glazed at me. I was back at the beach. It looked exactly like it had when I had left. The scarecrow was in it's place and the pearl was glinting against the sunlight. It felt like no time had passed. Like it was just a dream. Yet, there was something strange about the place, something I could not explain and I never could. ''It was just a dream,'' I told myself firmly. I packed everything I had brought and was leaving. While walking, I looked back at the scarecrow and smiled and I could have sworn, that it winked back at me.
