Twelve
Born 1976, M, from Whitechapel, Australia
She had seen them arrive as the village lay sleeping. A village of peace. A village of hope. They had feasted that night: mutant beef paired with hooch. Food was sparse and its finding led to careless elation. The sentries, too drunk to be any use. She met the enemy in front of the fence. Don’t come inside. Please don’t come inside. She asked that they wait. Wait and talk. Some of them laughed.
The largest one spoke. He spoke common-tongue in ragged staccato. They came for water and food; they came for women and men; they came “cos’ they could”. If she gave in, she’d be dispatched quickly. Put up a fight—there'd be pain, blood, and torture. She looked back at her home, at the toys left by children. They knew not what came.
She fell to one knee—tears in her eyes. The pain rose in her throat. This was the end and what an end it would be. Her hands and knees quivered as the twelve moved on in. Her biceps swelled and she screamed. The transformation: it hurt. Radiation had changed her—made her more than she was. Less too. Less afraid. There were twelve of them and one of her. They didn’t stand a chance.

07/03/2020Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.....or in this case, transformed. May we never have to cause such fury.
Intriguing story. But that's what you do.

07/03/2020Jason,
I am so glad she won. If only we could always be the Victor against evil and power. And you are correct...transformations hurt, and not just in stories.
Smiles, Kevin

07/03/2020Thank you, Kevin. You're very perceptive--I've been thinking a lot about the pain of shedding one's past and becoming something new. It's often traumatic and painful but can bring with it new 'powers', as it were. : )

07/03/2020See, you say that, Jd, but you'd enjoy wearing a spiked helmet as much as the next person. Also, I'd want to be her too! : )

07/03/2020Good job Jason.
while reading the story, I sensed you addressing yourself, maybe your fears or hopes, but I strongly touched that.

07/03/2020Thank you, Aziz. You're right--I think the dystopian future trope is ripe for introspection. When the trappings of modern life are stripped away, it definitely holds up a mirror to your authentic self. : )
