LETTER TO AFRICAN PARENTS
Marriage, you claim is the only noble and ultimate accomplishment in a woman's life, insisting that I must quickly be betrothed or forever remain incomplete in life.
Marriage, you have preached, is the only sure hedge on livelihood and security, insisting that I must be paired or
inconsequentially exist for all you care! No wonder you are so engrossed in my bride price rather than my bright smiles!
I hold thee, Oh esteemed mother Africa, the soil of my flesh! That thy daughter not be reincarnated with a choiceless burden in her next world, lest she risk the repeat of an outcast in her own soil because of her rejection for emotional Slavery.
My people blindly follow an unwritten rule and my protestation will be my undoing!
Just like the healing attributes of expressive art, my blossoming should not be tied to a rule but you have choosen a repeat of yesterday so to have me ruled.
Million times you've reminded me that my decision will bring shame to you in the neighborhood, so I ask; neighbours' opinion and my happiness, which comes first in your preference scale?
I did not choose to be single remember, I only chose not to play a game of emotional uncertainty, but my choice matters less to you! You only care about projecting the family image as it suits your belief to the world!
Single motherhood to me is not a curse, but you seem to hate my truth with obstinate pride, even if my joy ends in the care of a human beast!
Again I stand, single motherhood is not a crime. If it is fated, I accept it with pride and will sure leave an indelible footprint before a goodbye, for the change starts with my bequeathment to humanity.
Don't get it twisted, marriage is my admirable lifetime dream only if my partner will forever remain a friend. But whether you accept my truth or not, this very union is never for all.
Either way, I must bear myself a child as a choice for what matters in the end is the companionship I will receive from my gift of love to the world.
I repeat, either way, I must bear myself a child! For what matters at the end is a hand that will help me lift a cup when my veins have failed
African Parents oh thee I plead!
Unconditionally love your daughters even if they end up in your home!
