I was gasping for breath. Not like a sort of breathlessness you get when you're running from a blindfolded sibling, both of you laughing your heads off.
Damn, I wish that was the type I had.
The type I had was the type that you get while running from some deranged stranger who claimed to be your true mother and was trying to take you home with her, saying that your whole previous life and world was one giant facade. Doesn't sound familiar, does it? Yeah, apparently, I've always been different.
And in my case, different was deadly.
*********
It started with some text on my phone, while I was walking home, telling me that I was her true daughter, and that my name was Caedisianita. I read the name of the person, and it seemed vaguely familiar. I might have seen it in the papers, and I guessed that it was probably some weird cyber-pranker or something.
But imagine it! Some weirdo walking up to you on a street, saying, "Hey, you're my real child?" Not to mention the name!!! Caedisianita? What was I, some crazy murderer? And HELLO, I was born in the 21st century, NOT freaking 9000 B.C.! After screenshotting and sending it to my mom, captioned: "Hey, Mom, looks like someone wants me for a kid! Shocking, isn't it? LMAO." Yeah, Mom and I would always joke around with each other. Honestly, we had such affection towards one another that dreams and reality seemed to be blurred.
But one thing broke through that facade when I sent that message.
Our relationship still seemed to be out of a dream, but not a good one.
It was out of a nightmare.
"LEXIA, GET OUT. COME HOME. NOW."
*********
My blood ran cold. No, it didn't even run. It froze in its place.
I ran like I never ran before.
I found her on the doorstep, and when she saw me, her phone slid from her hands and she gave me a rib-breaking hug. She then fastened every lock on the house, telling me not to say a word, and giving me a kiss on my tear-strewn face.
"Mama, what's happening? Do you know her?"
She placed a finger on her lips and shushed me to bed, climbing in with me so that I didn't get scared. What scared me is the fact that she kept my dad's rifle, the type he used when he used to go hunting, next to the door, just in case, according to her.
*********
A wailing alarm filled the home. I woke up, terrified, and saw that my mom had gone. I locked the door frantically and texted her, "MOM, WHERE ARE YOU?"
"SWEETIE, DON'T WORRY, BUT YOU'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING."
"WHAT?"
"THAT WOMAN IS COMING IN. GRAB THAT GUN AND AIM IT TOWARD THE DOOR, AND AS SOON AS YOU HEAR SOMEONE, SHOOT THROUGH THE DOOR."
"WHAT? WHY? CAN'T YOU JUST CALL THE POLICE?"
"DAMMIT, TO HELL WITH THE POLICE!"
"WHAT'S WRONG WI-"
"SWEETIE, YOU'RE GOING TO GET KILLED, THERE'S NO TIME! DO WHAT I TELL YOU!"
I did. And when I heard some frantic turns at the door, and I took a deep breath and fired, and when I heard a womanly wail echo, I fainted.
*********
I woke up, scared. Thinking hopefully it was all a dream. I cried out, "Mama!" and flung my arms around her.
That's when I realized:
That wasn't my mom.
