When I was reading a magazine a few days back, Something caught my attention. It read this way, "Close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds." Is this what God has created a person for? To end your life abruptly just because you failed in your exams, didn't get a job, or love failure~ this isn't life. When I read this disturbing phrase, Something thronged me to share the life story of one of the most influential persons in the world. Read it out:
He had very little formal education, but read voraciously when not working on his father’s farm.
1816: His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
1818: His mother died.
1831: Failed in business.
1832: Ran for state legislature – lost.
1832: Also lost his job – wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in.
1833: Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
1834: Ran for state legislature again – won.
1835: Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
1836: Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
1838: Sought to become speaker of the state legislature – defeated.
1840: Sought to become elector – defeated.
1843: Ran for Congress – lost.
1846: Ran for Congress again – this time he won – went to Washington and did a good job.
1848: Ran for re-election to Congress – lost.
1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state – rejected.
1854: Ran for Senate of the United States – lost.
1856: Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party’s national convention – got less than 100 votes.
1858: Ran for U.S. Senate again – again he lost.
And Finally in 1860: Elected president of the United States.
He is none other than the famous Abraham Lincoln.
Do you want to call him a loser? He fell into the clutches of failure many times but managed to put them down. He realised that it doesn't matter whether you're knocked down, it only matters whether you get up. And that's what he exactly did! He never thought of committing suicide at any point in his life. This is because he never gave way to what people thought him to be. People might have thought that he was just wasting time trying to attempt the legislative races. Yet, He never quit. In fact his most inspirational quote, "I’m a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn’t have the heart to let him down.” Says it all.

10/13/2020Helsa,
Congratulations. In my country (the USA) it is surprising how many people don't know the course that President Lincoln's life took. And as the rest of the thread has stated so clearly, we needed this, and you, for these troubled times, to remind us that : "This too will end."
I am so glad you got Story Star of the Day...you earned it!
Smiles, Kevin

10/13/2020Thank you so much Kevin! It means a lot yo earn some nice comments from you! Though I'm from India, the life of Abraham Lincoln stands as a biggest example to teens all over the world! I was inspired and hope the others will too! Instead of pulling down his statues, they must pull down their acts!

10/12/2020Your story is the kind of reminder and inspiration we need right now, Helsa, in these dark times we are living in. Especially when there are rioting idiots tearing down statues of Abraham Lincoln all over the USA right now, even though he is the one person most responsible for freeing those who were enslaved in our distant past. Thank you for sharing this great story and history lesson with us. I hope it helps someone to keep going when they feel like giving up. Happy Short Story STAR of the Day! :-)
